printui.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system component used by printer-configuration dialogs and printer-management commands. If printui.dll is missing, cannot be loaded, or was not found, repair Windows rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The file is part of the Windows Print UI component. Microsoft identifies its main callable entry point as PrintUIEntry, which Windows can invoke through rundll32. It is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET component, game dependency, or ordinary third-party application file.

- Does Windows printer setup fail, or does only one application fail?
- Is the file absent, or does it exist but fail to load?
- Did the problem begin after an update, antivirus alert, cleanup utility, crash, or printer-driver installation?
- Are you using Windows 11 or Windows 10?
- Is the failing application 32-bit or 64-bit?
Do not download printui.dll from a DLL archive. An unfamiliar copy can contain malware, belong to another Windows build, use the wrong architecture, or leave the underlying component-store problem unresolved.
Confirm where printui.dll belongs
On 64-bit Windows, Windows normally uses two copies:
%WINDIR%System32printui.dllis the native 64-bit file.%WINDIR%SysWOW64printui.dllis the 32-bit compatibility file.
Despite its name, System32 contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows. SysWOW64 contains 32-bit files used by 32-bit applications.
On 32-bit Windows, the normal system copy is under %WINDIR%System32.
Open Command Prompt and run:
where printui.dll
dir "%WINDIR%System32printui.dll"
dir "%WINDIR%SysWOW64printui.dll"
A missing 32-bit copy can matter even when the 64-bit copy exists. A 32-bit printer utility or application may be unable to start because it needs the file from SysWOW64.
You can also check a protected file with:
sfc /verifyfile=%WINDIR%System32printui.dll
On a 64-bit installation, repeat the check for the 32-bit location if that is the copy involved:
sfc /verifyfile=%WINDIR%SysWOW64printui.dll
These checks do not repair anything. They only help establish whether the expected files are present and whether Windows considers them protected system files.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes, depending on pending updates

Windows 11
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
- Test the printer dialog or application again.
Microsoft’s instructions for installing updates are available on its Windows Update support page.
Windows 10
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install the available updates.
- Restart the computer.
- Test the failing operation again.
If the error began immediately after an update, note the update history rather than downloading a replacement DLL. Windows recovery options can help when an update introduced the problem, but uninstalling an update should be based on timing and evidence.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Existing repair commands remain useful, but future update availability and support differ from Windows 11.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf the error remains after updating and restarting, continue with DISM and SFC.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then uses that store to check and restore protected system files, including Windows components that may be damaged or missing.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait until the operation completes.
Do not close the window simply because progress appears to pause. DISM may use Windows Update as its repair source.
When DISM completes successfully, run SFC:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait for verification to reach 100 percent. Restart Windows after the scan, then test the affected printer configuration or application.
Microsoft explains the DISM and SFC process in its guide to repairing missing or corrupted system files.
If you prefer help identifying outdated or damaged Windows components instead of repeatedly hunting through repair results yourself, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and show what it finds; repairing the detected issues requires the full version, and it is not a substitute for Microsoft’s built-in DISM and SFC process.
Understand the SFC result
SFC normally ends with one of these messages.
Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations
The protected files checked by SFC were not found to be corrupt. If printui.dll still fails, investigate dependencies, printer drivers, architecture, or the individual application.

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them
Restart Windows and test again. If the error has gone, do not copy another DLL over the repaired system file.

The component store or repair source may also be damaged. Run DISM again, confirm that Windows Update is working, and proceed to a matching repair source or repair installation if necessary.

Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation
Microsoft recommends additional troubleshooting, including running the scan in an applicable Safe Mode environment. The result does not prove that printui.dll is the only damaged file.
To extract SFC details from the CBS log, run:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log > "%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"
This creates sfcdetails.txt on the desktop.
Fix 3: Use a matching DISM repair source
Time needed: 30 minutes to several hours
If DISM reports that source files could not be found, Windows Update may not have the required repair files. Use Windows installation media or another verified repair source that matches the installed Windows version, edition, language, and architecture.
A generic ISO or another computer’s DLL is not a suitable source. Mixing builds can create additional servicing problems.
The command format is:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth ^
/Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual path to the matching Windows source.
The caret characters allow the command to continue onto the next line in Command Prompt. You can also enter the command on one line:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
After DISM finishes, run:
sfc /scannow
Restart and test the failing feature.
Microsoft’s documentation for repairing a Windows image explains how repair sources work. If you do not have a matching source, do not substitute a downloaded printui.dll.
Fix 4: Determine whether the problem is actually a dependency
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
An error such as “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that printui.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by the Print UI component.
Recommended Free Tools
This is especially important when:
printui.dllexists in the expected directory.- SFC reports no integrity violations.
- Only one printer tool fails.
- Only a 32-bit application fails on 64-bit Windows.
- The error appeared after installing a printer driver.
Check the complete error text in the application or Event Viewer. Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET merely because the message mentions a DLL. Those packages are not established as the source of a normal Windows printui.dll failure.
If Windows printer settings work but one application does not, repair or reinstall that application. If the application has a built-in Repair, Verify, or Scan and repair option, use it. Do not place a downloaded DLL beside the program’s executable.

Fix 5: Repair the printer driver or printer software
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes
If printui.dll exists and SFC finds no corruption, the printer driver may be the real problem.
- Open Start.
- Search for Settings and open it.
- Go to Bluetooth & devices on Windows 11, or Devices on Windows 10.
- Open Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device or Add a printer or scanner.
- Install the printer again using Windows Update or the printer manufacturer’s official support package.
You can also inspect Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, or the relevant device category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if requested.
If Windows cannot find a suitable driver, use the printer manufacturer’s official support page. Select the package for the correct Windows version and architecture. Do not replace the Windows Print UI DLL to solve a vendor-driver problem.
When identifying stale drivers across several printers is the tedious part, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; installing or repairing drivers requires the full version, and the printer manufacturer’s official driver remains the appropriate source when a specific package is required.
If only one printer fails, test with another printer or a generic Microsoft class driver where appropriate. If every printer-related Windows feature fails, return to DISM and SFC rather than assuming all printer drivers became damaged at once.
Fix 6: Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
Security software may quarantine a system file after a false detection or after Windows component damage. Do not immediately restore a quarantined item.
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Inspect the detection, file path, and action.
- Confirm whether the file is the expected Microsoft Windows copy.
Only restore or allow the file when its path, signature, and provenance establish that it is genuine and the detection is a false positive. If you are uncertain, leave it quarantined and use DISM and SFC to restore the protected component.

A copy named printui.dll outside the normal Windows component locations, especially beside an unrelated executable, should not be treated as a repair source. Run a reputable security scan and investigate the file instead of overwriting it.
Fix 7: Use the Windows 11 repair reinstall
Time needed: 30 minutes to several hours
If DISM and SFC cannot restore the component, Windows 11 may offer a repair reinstall that keeps apps, files, and settings.
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
- Restart when Windows completes the process.
- Test the printer configuration again.
Microsoft says this process reinstalls the current Windows version and repairs system files and components while preserving apps, files, and settings. Availability can depend on the Windows installation and configuration.
Read Microsoft’s instructions for reinstalling the current Windows version.
Back up important files before any operating-system repair.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 8: Perform an in-place Windows repair
Time needed: 1 to several hours
For broader component corruption, use matching Windows installation media and choose the in-place upgrade option when available.
- Obtain official Windows installation media that matches the installed edition and architecture.
- Back up important files.
- Start Windows normally.
- Open the installation media from within Windows.
- Run the setup program.
- Choose the option to keep personal files and apps when offered.
- Complete the installation.
- Install pending updates.
- Test the printer subsystem.
Do not boot directly from the media if your intention is to preserve installed applications and files. A clean installation is a different process and can remove data or programs.
Microsoft documents the process in its guide to reinstalling Windows with installation media.
Do not use regsvr32 as a generic repair
You may see advice to run:
regsvr32 printui.dll
This is not a standard repair for printui.dll.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft’s Print UI documentation identifies PrintUIEntry as the relevant callable entry point instead.
Registering the file cannot:
- Restore a missing DLL.
- Repair a damaged Windows component store.
- Restore a missing dependency.
- Correct a 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch.
- Repair a printer driver.
Microsoft documents the purpose of regsvr32 separately from its documentation for PrintUIEntry. Use the latter only for printer-management or diagnostic commands, not as a file-repair command.
For example, Microsoft documents:
rundll32 printui.dll,PrintUIEntry /?
The PrintUIEntry keyword is case-sensitive. Other documented examples include:

These commands invoke printer functions. They do not repair a missing or corrupt DLL.
A special 32-bit printer error
Microsoft documented a historical Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 problem where Add Printer failed with:
Windows can't open Add Printer.
Operation could not be completed (error 0x0000007e).
That case involved a missing 32-bit Tcpmonui.dll dependency, not necessarily a damaged printui.dll. The fix was the applicable Microsoft hotfix or later Windows update, not a downloaded replacement Print UI file.
This example shows why the exact error, Windows version, and application architecture matter. Do not treat every Add Printer failure as proof that printui.dll is missing.

What usually causes the error
| Likely cause | What points to it | Appropriate response |
|---|---|---|
| Windows component corruption or deletion | File is absent, multiple Windows features fail, or SFC reports damage | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Failed Windows update | Problem began after an interrupted or incomplete update | Install updates, restart, then repair Windows |
| Antivirus quarantine | Security history shows the file was removed | Verify the path and signature, then use DISM/SFC |
| Missing dependency | File exists but Windows reports a module or entry-point problem | Check complete error details and architecture |
| Printer-driver damage | Only one printer or printer utility fails | Remove and reinstall the official driver |
| 32-bit/64-bit mismatch | Only a 32-bit tool or application fails | Check both System32 and SysWOW64 |
| Application-specific damage | Windows printer settings work, but one program fails | Repair or reinstall that program |
| Suspicious DLL copy | File is outside normal Windows locations | Scan and investigate rather than replacing it |
Why manually downloading printui.dll is unsafe
A standalone download is usually the wrong repair because Windows system files are tied to the operating-system build, servicing state, language, and architecture.
Avoid:
- DLL download sites archives.
- Copying a file from another computer.
- Copying a 32-bit file into a 64-bit location.
- Copying a 64-bit file into a 32-bit application directory.
- Replacing only
printui.dllwhen dependencies are damaged. - Restoring an unverified antivirus quarantine item.
- Using an old file from Windows 7, 8.1, or another Windows release.
Microsoft does describe manual replacement as an advanced fallback when SFC cannot repair a protected file. That procedure requires a known-good file from the same Windows version and build, along with ownership and permission changes. It should not be the first-line solution.
Frequently asked questions
Is printui.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. printui.dll is the Microsoft Windows Print UI DLL, published by Microsoft Corporation. It supports printer-configuration interfaces and PrintUIEntry functions.
Should I download printui.dll?
No. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, matching Windows installation media, or a Windows repair installation. A random DLL can be malicious or incompatible.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Is printui.dll part of Visual C++ or DirectX?
No evidence establishes that a normal printui.dll error requires Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET. It is a Windows component. Install another runtime only when the actual error identifies a file belonging to that runtime.
Why does the file exist but Windows still say it cannot be loaded?
The error may involve a missing dependency, damaged component, incompatible architecture, printer driver, or application-specific problem. The presence of the file alone does not prove that the entire loading chain is healthy.
Should I run regsvr32 printui.dll?
Usually not. regsvr32 is for DLLs with registration entry points. Print UI uses PrintUIEntry for printer functions, and registration does not repair missing files or Windows corruption.
Which copy matters on 64-bit Windows?
Both may matter. System32 normally contains the native 64-bit copy, while SysWOW64 normally contains the 32-bit copy. A 32-bit printer utility can fail even when the 64-bit copy is present.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What if SFC says everything is fine?
Test whether the failure affects one application, one printer, or all printer configuration. Then inspect drivers, dependencies, architecture, antivirus history, and the complete error details.
What if DISM and SFC do not fix it?
Use a matching repair source, then consider Windows 11’s Reinstall now recovery option or an in-place repair installation. Back up important files first.
Can a printer driver reinstall repair printui.dll?
No. A driver reinstall can fix a printer-specific failure, but it does not replace a damaged Windows system component. Use DISM and SFC for the Windows file itself.
What information should I provide when asking for further help?
Record the exact error, Windows version and build, whether the system is 32-bit or 64-bit, the locations where printui.dll is present, the SFC result, and whether Windows printer settings or only one application fails. Also note whether the problem followed an update, antivirus alert, cleanup, or driver installation.
