Before changing Windows files, answer these questions:
- Which program shows the error? Look for AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, or another Autodesk application in the message or shortcut.
- When does it happen? Note whether the error appears at startup, while opening a drawing, during plotting, after an update, or after uninstalling software.
- What does the message say? Common wording includes “prntprogres.dll is missing,” “was not found,” “could not be loaded,” or “The specified module could not be found.”
- Was the file recently quarantined or deleted? Check Windows Security before downloading anything.
- Is the Autodesk program still installed? If it is, repair that installation. If it is not, remove obsolete shortcuts or reinstall the program that still needs it.
- Are you using 64-bit Windows? That does not automatically mean you need a 64-bit copy of this DLL. The application determines which file architecture it needs.
prntprogres.dll is an Autodesk application file, not a normal Windows component. The safest repair is to restore it from the Autodesk product’s own installer rather than copying a random DLL into a Windows system folder.

What prntprogres.dll is
prntprogres.dll is described as the Autodesk Hardcopy Plot Progress Dialog Resource DLL. It belongs to the Autodesk Hardcopy Subsystem, which supports plotting and hardcopy-related functions in Autodesk software.
It has been associated with older AutoCAD-family installations, including AutoCAD LT and AutoCAD releases from the same era. That association does not prove that every copy came from the same product or release. Identify the Autodesk application named in your error before choosing a repair.

Windows may report that a module could not be found even when the named DLL exists. In some cases, the missing item is a dependency that the Autodesk program needs while loading prntprogres.dll.
Fix 1: Repair the Autodesk installation
Repair is the fastest and most appropriate fix when the Autodesk product is still installed. It restores missing application files and related installation information without requiring you to find individual DLLs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFrom Windows Settings
- Close AutoCAD and every other Autodesk application.
- Right-click Start and select Installed apps.
- Find the Autodesk product named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Modify, Repair, or Change, depending on the installer.
- Follow the Autodesk installer prompts.
- Restart Windows when the process finishes.
- Start the Autodesk application again and repeat the action that produced the error.
If the application opens and can reach its plotting or hardcopy functions without the DLL message, the repair worked.
From Control Panel
Older Autodesk products may not appear with a repair option in Settings.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Find the Autodesk product.
- Right-click it or select Uninstall/Change.
- Choose Repair.
- Complete the wizard and restart Windows.
If the installer offers Reinstall instead of Repair, use Reinstall when Repair fails. Reinstalling restores files from the original installation source and is more useful when the installed copy is incomplete or mismatched.
If Repair is unavailable
Newer Autodesk installation workflows may not provide a Repair or Reinstall button. In that case:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Save your Autodesk settings and close all Autodesk programs.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Uninstall the affected Autodesk product.
- Restart Windows.
- Sign in to your Autodesk Account from a web browser.
- Download fresh installation media for the exact product and release.
- Run the installer as an administrator if Windows requests permission.
- Complete the installation.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
Do not install a different Autodesk product simply because its name looks similar. The program that originally references prntprogres.dll should be restored from its own installation source.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine an application DLL after an update, cleanup operation, or detection event. Do not immediately restore the file. First verify that it came from the Autodesk installation and that the detection is being investigated.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
prntprogres.dll. - Expand the event and record the detected path, threat name, date, and action.
- Compare the path with the Autodesk installation directory.
- Confirm that the Autodesk installer came from your legitimate Autodesk account or original installation media.
- Check whether the file has a valid Autodesk digital signature if the security details provide one.
If the file is clearly part of the genuine Autodesk installation and your security administrator confirms that the detection is a false positive, use the available Restore or Allow on device action. Then repair or reinstall Autodesk so the complete installation is restored.
If the file reappears in quarantine immediately after reinstalling, stop restoring it repeatedly. Investigate the security detection, verify the installer source, update Windows Security, and contact the security product’s support team or your organization’s administrator.

Fix 3: Reinstall after a failed update or cleanup
A failed update, interrupted uninstall, disk cleanup, or manual deletion can leave Autodesk files from different releases in the same installation. That can produce a missing-file message even when a similarly named file remains on the disk.

Use a clean reinstall when:
- Repair completes but the same message returns.
- The Autodesk updater stopped partway through.
- The program was removed manually.
- Multiple Autodesk versions were installed and partially removed.
- The installation folder contains files from different releases.
- The error began immediately after an uninstall or update.
The general sequence is:
- Uninstall the affected Autodesk product from Settings > Apps > Installed apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Remove only Autodesk components that you recognize and that belong to the failed installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Download fresh installation media from your Autodesk Account.
- Install the product again.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application before restoring optional plugins or custom add-ons.
If the application works after reinstalling but fails again after restoring a plugin, the plugin may be the component making the obsolete reference. Remove or update that plugin through its developer.
Fix 4: Check for a missing dependency
The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that prntprogres.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load the DLL because another library required by the Autodesk application is missing.
Do not guess at dependencies by downloading multiple runtime files. Instead:
- Write down the full error message.
- Check whether the Autodesk installer reports another missing component.
- Open Event Viewer by pressing Windows key + R, typing
eventvwr.msc, and pressing Enter. - Select Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for an error at the same time as the Autodesk failure.
- Note the application name and any additional module named in the event.
- Repair or reinstall the Autodesk product again using fresh installation media.
Visual C++ Redistributables are not the normal fix for prntprogres.dll, which is identified as an Autodesk resource DLL. If the Autodesk installer or a separate error explicitly identifies a missing Visual C++ runtime, use Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable downloads and install the architecture required by the application.
Multiple Visual C++ Redistributable versions can coexist. Do not remove existing versions simply because a newer one is available.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components if the installer itself fails
Windows repair commands will not normally recreate an Autodesk-owned DLL. They are useful when the Autodesk installer cannot run because Windows servicing components or protected system files are damaged.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete, then retry the Autodesk repair or installation.
DISM repairs the Windows image that system file checking relies on. SFC checks protected Windows files. Neither command should be expected to restore prntprogres.dll directly. Microsoft provides separate documentation for DISM image repair and System File Checker.
Repeating SFC and DISM without checking what changed rarely helps. If both commands complete without resolving the Autodesk installer problem, continue with fresh Autodesk installation media, pending Windows updates, or a clean uninstall.
When the manual process of checking Windows components becomes difficult, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it identifies; its full version performs the repair, but reinstalling the Autodesk program remains the definitive fix for this application-owned DLL.
Fix 6: Update the Autodesk program and related drivers
An old Autodesk release may depend on files that were removed or altered by a newer Windows configuration. After restoring the application, install updates offered for that exact Autodesk product. Do not replace its files with those from another release.
If the error occurs while printing or plotting, also check the printer driver:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, or Universal Serial Bus controllers, depending on how the printer is connected.
- Right-click the affected printer.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test Autodesk plotting.
For a manufacturer-provided driver, download it from the printer manufacturer’s official support page. Do not assume that a printer driver caused the missing DLL, but updating it can address a separate plotting failure after Autodesk has been repaired.
When manually checking many device drivers becomes tedious, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; the free scan shows what it finds, while the full version installs updates, and it is not a substitute for reinstalling the Autodesk application itself.
Do not copy the DLL into System32 or SysWOW64
Avoid DLL archive sites that offer an isolated prntprogres.dll download. A replacement can be:

- From the wrong Autodesk release
- The wrong architecture
- Modified or unsafe
- Missing a required dependency
- Incompatible with the executable that requests it
Copying it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 can also hide the real installation problem and cause another application to load the wrong file.
Windows normally searches the application directory during DLL loading. An application-owned Autodesk DLL generally belongs with the Autodesk installation, not in a global Windows folder. Microsoft explains the process in its documentation on DLL search order.
Do not substitute similarly named files such as:
prntprog.dllprntprogRes.dll- Another Autodesk plotting or printing DLL
Similar names do not indicate interchangeability.
Do not use regsvr32 for this file
A .dll extension does not mean that a file should be registered. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point, commonly COM or ActiveX components.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
There is no reliable evidence that prntprogres.dll is a self-registering component. Running a command such as this is therefore not a proper repair:
regsvr32 prntprogres.dll
It may produce an entry-point error, a module error, or no useful change. The correct response to a missing Autodesk resource DLL is to repair or reinstall the owning Autodesk product. Microsoft describes the intended use of regsvr32.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understanding 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Reported third-party metadata commonly identifies prntprogres.dll as a Win32 or 32-bit file. That is reported file information, not a universal Autodesk compatibility guarantee.
A 64-bit Windows installation can run 32-bit Autodesk software, so do not assume that the DLL must be 64-bit. Likewise, do not download a file labeled x64 merely because the operating system is 64-bit.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The application’s architecture, Autodesk release, installation path, and dependencies must match. The safest way to obtain the correct copy is to let the exact Autodesk installer restore it.
A wrong-architecture or wrong-version file may produce errors such as:
- “The application was unable to start correctly.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “The procedure entry point could not be located.”
- A crash when plotting or opening a drawing
These symptoms are reasons to reinstall the Autodesk product, not reasons to try more DLL copies.
If Autodesk is no longer installed
If the error appears after removing Autodesk, determine what is still launching the old reference.
- Check the shortcut that produces the message.
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- Review the Target field.
- Check Task Manager > Startup apps for an Autodesk entry.
- Look in Task Scheduler for a task belonging to the removed product.
- Remove the obsolete shortcut or startup entry if you no longer need the program.
- If you still need the application, reinstall it from official Autodesk installation media.
Do not restore an old DLL merely to satisfy a shortcut for software that is no longer installed. The reference should be removed with the obsolete application or restored by reinstalling that application.
If reinstalling still does not fix the error
Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm that you reinstalled the product named in the error, not a different Autodesk product.
- Restart Windows after uninstalling and again after reinstalling.
- Temporarily disconnect optional plugins and add-ons.
- Check Windows Security Protection history again.
- Install pending Windows updates.
- Run the installer as administrator where appropriate.
- Try the installation from a new local administrator profile.
- Confirm that the installation path is accessible and not controlled by restrictive security software.
- Repeat the installation with fresh Autodesk media.
- Contact Autodesk support with the exact error text, product name, installation log, and security detection details.
A damaged user profile can interfere with installation permissions and temporary files. Testing from a new local administrator profile can separate a profile problem from a damaged Autodesk package.

When System Restore is appropriate
System Restore is a fallback, not the first repair for prntprogres.dll.
Consider it only when:
- The file worked recently.
- The problem began after a clearly identified system change.
- No valid Autodesk installation media is available.
- A suitable restore point predates the failure.
System Restore can affect installed applications and drivers. It does not replace a proper Autodesk repair and may not restore an application file if the installation itself is damaged.

Frequently asked questions
Is prntprogres.dll a Windows file?
No evidence identifies it as a normal Windows component. It is associated with Autodesk’s Hardcopy Subsystem and older AutoCAD-family installations.
What does “The program cannot start because prntprogres.dll is missing” mean?
It usually means that an Autodesk executable cannot find or load a file supplied by its installation. Repair or reinstall the Autodesk product named in the error.
Can I download prntprogres.dll separately?
Do not use random DLL download sites. They may provide the wrong release, wrong architecture, an unsafe file, or a copy that does not include the missing dependency. Use the Autodesk installer instead.
Should I copy it to System32?
No. An Autodesk application DLL should normally remain in the application’s installation directory. Copying it to a Windows system folder can create conflicts and does not repair the Autodesk installation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I register it with regsvr32?
No. There is no evidence that this resource DLL requires COM-style registration. Repair or reinstall the owning application.
Why does Windows say the specified module could not be found when the file is present?
The named DLL may depend on another missing library. Repair the Autodesk installation and inspect the complete application error rather than replacing the visible filename.
Does Windows 11 require a 64-bit prntprogres.dll?
Not necessarily. Reported metadata generally identifies the file as Win32, and a 64-bit version of Windows can run 32-bit Autodesk software. The Autodesk installer should select the correct file for the application.
Can SFC restore prntprogres.dll?
SFC repairs protected Windows files. prntprogres.dll is associated with Autodesk, so SFC is unlikely to recreate it. Use SFC and DISM only when Windows corruption is preventing Autodesk installation or repair.
What if antivirus quarantines the file again?
Do not keep restoring it without investigation. Verify the Autodesk source, path, signature, and detection details, then have the security product or administrator confirm whether the event is a false positive.
What is the safest fix?
Identify the Autodesk application that needs the file, close it, use Repair, and then use Reinstall with fresh official installation media if Repair fails. That restores the application in the correct location with matching files and dependencies.
