1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutemsltus40.dll is the 32-bit Microsoft Jet 4.0 Lotus 1-2-3 installable ISAM driver. When Windows reports that msltus40.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, the safest repair is to restore the application or Microsoft Jet component that needs it, not to download a random DLL.
This file supports older Jet and DAO programs that import, export, or link Lotus spreadsheet formats such as .wk1, .wk3, and .wk4. It is not a DirectX, Visual C++, .NET, sound, or graphics runtime.

Fix 1: Identify the program that triggers the error
Time needed: 2–5 minutes
The application named in the error is the most important clue. msltus40.dll is normally used by older database and office software, including some Microsoft Access, DAO, Jet, Office, Visual Basic, and database utility applications.
Follow these steps:
- Write down the full error message.
- Note the application name shown in the title bar or immediately before the error.
- Check whether the error appears:
- when Windows starts;
- when one older program opens;
- when importing a Lotus spreadsheet;
- after reinstalling Office or Access;
- after antivirus software removed a file;
- after disk cleanup, an update, or an application uninstall.
- Right-click the program’s shortcut and select Properties.
- Open the Details tab and record the product name and file location if available.
If only one application reports the problem, repair or reinstall that application before changing Windows. If several unrelated programs fail, continue with the Windows repair steps below.

Do not assume that a game genuinely requires this file merely because a game launcher displays its name. No reliable evidence ties msltus40.dll to a particular modern game. If a launcher reports it, use the launcher’s official verify or repair function first.
Fix 2: Install Windows updates and restart
Time needed: 10–30 minutes, excluding download time
Microsoft has shipped msltus40.dll as an x86 Jet component in Windows versions including Windows 7 and Windows 10-era installations. A pending update or incomplete restart can leave system components in an inconsistent state.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
On Windows 11:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
- Return to Windows Update and check again.
- Launch the affected application.
On Windows 10:
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the available updates.
- Restart the computer.
- Test the application again.
If the error remains, do not download the file manually. Continue with the component repair commands.
Fix 3: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
This is the safest general repair when a Windows component is missing or corrupted. Microsoft recommends running Deployment Image Servicing and Management, or DISM, before System File Checker, or SFC.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Restart Windows after DISM completes.
Run SFC
After the restart:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator again.
- Enter:
sfc /scannow
- Press Enter.
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application.
The useful SFC results are:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows did not find damaged protected files.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test the application.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, restart, and run SFC again.
- Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation: retry from Safe Mode or continue with application repair.
If DISM cannot use Windows Update, use a matching Windows repair source supplied by installation media or your administrator:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual path to a repair source that matches the installed Windows edition and build.
Outbyte PC Repair can show which system problems remain when you are repeatedly hunting through SFC and DISM results without knowing what changed. Its free scan identifies issues, while repair is performed by the full version, and it is optional rather than a requirement for this fix.
If Windows repair completes successfully but one program still reports msltus40.dll, the application installation is the more likely problem.
Fix 4: Repair or reinstall the affected application
Time needed: 5–30 minutes
A damaged application installation can lose Jet registration, supporting files, or the correct 32-bit database components while Windows itself remains healthy.
Repair a modern installed application
On Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If Repair does not solve the error, return to the same screen and select Reset only if you understand that it can remove application data or settings.
On Windows 10:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Select the affected application.
- Select Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart the application.
Repair a traditional desktop program
Some desktop applications use their own installer:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Test the program.
For Microsoft Office or Access, use the Office installation’s repair option rather than copying msltus40.dll into the Office folder. If the installer offers Quick Repair, try it first. If the error continues, use Online Repair when available.
Reinstall when repair fails
If no repair option exists:
- Back up the application’s documents and configuration files.
- Uninstall the affected program.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it from the original vendor media or official account.
- Install the program’s documented prerequisites.
- Start it and test the operation that previously failed.
If the program uses Lotus spreadsheet import or export, reinstalling the original program is particularly important because it may restore Jet configuration and related database components together.
Fix 5: Check the 32-bit and 64-bit architecture
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
msltus40.dll is a 32-bit DLL. A 32-bit application needs the x86 Jet component even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
On 64-bit Windows, the names System32 and SysWOW64 are counterintuitive:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →System32is generally where 64-bit system files are accessed.SysWOW64contains 32-bit system files used through Windows-on-Windows 64-bit compatibility.- File system redirection can change what a 32-bit or 64-bit process sees.
Do not move the file between these folders. Do not use the Windows operating-system bitness as proof that a 64-bit database package will satisfy a 32-bit Jet dependency.
To check the application architecture:
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Details.
- Right-click a column heading.
- Select Select columns.
- Enable Platform if your Windows version provides it.
- Start the affected application and inspect its process.
You can also check the program’s documentation or installer. If it is a 32-bit legacy program, repair or install the x86 prerequisite specified by that program.
The Access Database Engine Redistributable is not a verified replacement for the Jet Lotus ISAM driver. Microsoft describes that package as providing connectivity for Office formats including .mdb, .accdb, .xls, .xlsx, and .xlsb. Installing a 64-bit ACE package does not automatically restore a missing 32-bit msltus40.dll.
Fix 6: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Antivirus software can quarantine a component after an update, application installation, or false detection.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any detection related to the affected application or Jet component.
Restore a file only after confirming all of the following:
- it belongs to the expected Windows or application installation;
- the detection corresponds to the time the error began;
- the computer has been scanned;
- the application was installed from a trusted source.
If Windows Security detects the restored file again, do not create a broad exclusion. Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined item can cause it to be detected again. Repair or reinstall the owning application instead, and investigate the detection.
Fix 7: Use the original legacy Jet package only on compatible older Windows
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
Jet 4.0 Service Pack 8, including package records associated with KB829558, is a legacy package for older systems such as Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. The original Microsoft downloads are retired.
Do not treat Jet 4.0 SP8 as the normal fix for Windows 10 or Windows 11. Older Jet updates also distinguish between Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows Server releases. Installing an old package on an unsupported operating system can fail, leave the application unchanged, or introduce another compatibility problem.

- Identify the exact application and its architecture.
- Check the application vendor’s installation instructions.
- Use the vendor’s installer or a Microsoft package explicitly documented for that operating system.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the program.
The Microsoft Access Database Engine package is also not a universal Jet replacement. Choose it only when the application documentation specifically requires ACE or Office connectivity.
Fix 8: Register the DLL only when the application installer requires it
Time needed: 5 minutes
regsvr32 is not a universal DLL repair command. A DLL must export DllRegisterServer for registration to work, and registration cannot replace a missing file, repair corruption, supply dependencies, or correct a 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch.
msltus40.dll is documented as having registration exports, so registration can apply in some Jet setup scenarios. Use it only when the original application installer or vendor instructions specifically call for it.
For a 32-bit DLL on 64-bit Windows, the 32-bit copy of regsvr32 is normally located here:
C:WindowsSysWOW64regsvr32.exe "C:pathtomsltus40.dll"
For a 32-bit Windows installation, the command is commonly:
C:WindowsSystem32regsvr32.exe "C:pathtomsltus40.dll"
Replace the path with the verified location of the file. Do not run either command against a file downloaded from a DLL archive.
If registration reports that the module could not be found even though the file exists, a dependency may be missing. If it reports an architecture error, the wrong regsvr32 binary or wrong DLL architecture was used. In both cases, return to application repair rather than repeatedly registering the file.
Fix 9: Update or reinstall related drivers only when the application identifies one
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
msltus40.dll is a database component, not a display, printer, sound, or chipset driver. Device Manager will not normally restore it. Use driver repair only if the affected program also reports a specific hardware or database connectivity problem.

- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
If the problem began immediately after a driver update:
- Open Device Manager.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver if available.
- Restart and retest.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of checking many devices and guessing which driver is stale; its free scan identifies updates, while installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the affected application when that application owns the Jet failure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 10: Use System Restore after a known system change
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
Use System Restore when the error began after a clearly identified update, cleanup operation, or system change and the restore point predates the problem.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
- Test the affected application.
System Restore can revert system files, registry settings, and installed programs without removing personal files. It does not restore documents created after the restore point, and it is not a substitute for backing up important data.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Do not download msltus40.dll from a random DLL website and copy it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder.
That approach can introduce:
- malware or tampered files;
- the wrong Jet build;
- the wrong architecture;
- mismatched dependencies;
- incorrect registry configuration;
- a file that is unsigned or incompatible with the application.
It also often fails because “module not found” can refer to a dependency of msltus40.dll, not the named file itself. Microsoft’s own repair guidance favors Windows servicing and a known-good file from the same Windows installation source for advanced cases.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, the original application installer, Microsoft documentation, and the application vendor’s official support channel instead.
Common causes of msltus40.dll errors
| Likely cause | What usually fixes it |
|---|---|
| A Windows or Jet component is damaged | Windows Update, DISM, then SFC |
| One application has an incomplete installation | Repair or reinstall that application |
| Office or Access registration is damaged | Repair the Office or Access installation |
| Antivirus quarantined the component | Review Protection history and reinstall if necessary |
| A 32-bit program has the wrong database architecture | Install or repair the required x86 component |
| An old program expects a legacy Jet version | Follow the program vendor’s prerequisite instructions |
| A dependency is missing | Repair the owning application and inspect event logs |
| A recent system change caused the failure | Use System Restore when an appropriate point exists |
Public file inventories list x86 versions including 4.0.6508.0, 4.0.9502.0, 4.0.9702.0, 4.0.9756.0, and 4.0.9801.x. These listings are not a compatibility matrix, and files with the same displayed version should not be assumed interchangeable across builds, languages, or hashes.

If the file exists but the error continues
A present file does not prove that Windows can load it.
Check the following:
- Open Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error at the time the program failed.
- Record the application name, failing module, and dependency mentioned.
- Confirm that the application’s related Jet components, including
msjet40.dllwhere applicable, are present. - Repair the application again using its original installer.
- Check the relevant 32-bit Jet registry configuration rather than editing it manually.
Jet’s Lotus configuration uses the Jet4.0EnginesLotus settings and identifies the driver’s win32 path as msltus40.dll. Let the application setup manage these entries unless its vendor provides exact registry instructions.
If only one Windows account sees the error, test the application from a new local profile. This is a diagnostic step, not proof that profile corruption is a typical cause.
If every repair fails, collect:
- the exact error text;
- the application name and version;
- the Windows edition and build;
- whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit;
- the application’s architecture;
- the file path and file version;
- the Event Viewer entry;
- whether antivirus reported a quarantine.
That information distinguishes a missing file from a dependency failure, application damage, or an architecture mismatch.

FAQ
Is msltus40.dll a Windows system file?
It is a genuine Microsoft Jet component and has shipped as an x86 Windows component in some Windows releases. It is a specialized legacy Lotus 1-2-3 ISAM driver, not a general-purpose Windows runtime.
Does Windows 11 need msltus40.dll?
Windows does not need every Jet component for normal operation. An older application may need it, particularly when using Jet or DAO to access Lotus spreadsheet formats. The triggering application determines whether the component is required.
Is msltus40.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
The documented file is 32-bit. A 32-bit application needs the x86 component even on 64-bit Windows. There is no verified 64-bit msltus40.dll variant to install as a replacement.
Should I install Access Database Engine?
Not automatically. Access Database Engine is an ACE connectivity package for Office file formats and is not a verified replacement for the Jet Lotus ISAM driver. Install it only when the application specifically requires it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I run regsvr32 msltus40.dll?
Only when the original installer or vendor documentation requires registration. regsvr32 cannot repair a missing file, replace a dependency, or solve an architecture mismatch.
Can Windows Features restore this file?
Usually not. Optional Windows Features may add frameworks or legacy compatibility components, but they are not a general installer for msltus40.dll. Repair Windows or reinstall the application that owns the dependency.
Is Jet 4.0 SP8 the correct download for Windows 10 or Windows 11?
No. Jet 4.0 SP8 is a legacy package for older Windows versions, and its original Microsoft downloads are retired. Do not install it blindly on current Windows.
What is the most likely fix?
If one old application fails, repair or reinstall that application. If multiple programs report the error or Windows components appear damaged, install updates and run DISM followed by SFC.
