Most PS5 external-drive problems come from an incompatible drive, hub, cable, port, format, power issue, corruption, or an incorrect expectation about what USB storage can do. A compatible drive must support SuperSpeed USB at 5 Gbps or faster, hold between 250 GB and 8 TB, and connect directly to the PS5 without a USB hub. Do not format it until you have protected any important data.
Remember the most important limitation: PS5 games can be stored on USB Extended Storage but cannot be played directly from it. PS4 games can run from the external drive.

Check whether the drive is supported
USB Extended Storage is not the same as simply plugging any USB disk into the console. Sony documents these requirements:
| Requirement | Rule |
|---|---|
| USB interface | SuperSpeed USB, 5 Gbps or faster |
| Capacity | At least 250 GB and no more than 8 TB |
| Connection | Directly to the PS5; USB hubs are not supported |
| Simultaneous drives | Only one USB Extended Storage drive can be used at a time |
| Compatibility | Not every drive, enclosure, cable, or adapter is guaranteed to work |
A portable external HDD is usually the least expensive choice for archiving PS5 games and playing PS4 games. An external SSD transfers games faster, operates silently, and tolerates movement better, but it still cannot launch PS5 games over USB. A PS5-branded drive is not mandatory; the specifications and the complete drive assembly matter.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Do not assume that a drive is compatible because it has a USB 3.x label or its indicator light turns on. The light only proves that the drive is receiving power, not that the PS5 can communicate with its controller, enclosure, filesystem, or partitions.
See Sony’s USB Extended Storage requirements for the current documented limits.
Fix a PS5 that does not recognize the drive
Follow these steps in order. They are safer than immediately formatting the drive.

If the drive contains personal files, screenshots, video, or anything irreplaceable, do not format it yet.
- Update the PS5. Install the latest available system software, then restart the console.
- Disconnect and reconnect the drive. Turn the PS5 on, remove the drive, wait briefly, and connect it again.
- Remove every intermediary. Connect the drive directly to the console. Do not use a USB hub, dock, extension cable, or hub-equipped enclosure.
- Try a known-good data cable. A charge-only, damaged, overly long, or poorly shielded cable can provide power without a reliable data connection.
- Try another SuperSpeed port. If the current port fails, try another compatible port, preferably a rear SuperSpeed port as a practical troubleshooting step. Port behavior can vary by PS5 model, drive, and enclosure; Sony’s general guidance identifies SuperSpeed Type-A and Type-C ports rather than imposing a universal front-port ban.
- Check for signs of power or mechanical failure. Look for an indicator light or listen for normal spin-up from an HDD. No light or sound can indicate a cable, port, power, enclosure, or drive problem.
- Open Settings > Storage. Check whether the console lists the device under USB Extended Storage.
- Test another compatible drive. This is one of the fastest ways to separate a faulty drive or cable from a PS5 port or software problem.
Sony’s CE-100006-7 troubleshooting guidance also recommends updating the console, reconnecting the cable, removing hubs, formatting when appropriate, transferring content individually, and testing another storage device.
If the PS5 will not format the drive
Formatting as USB Extended Storage erases everything on the drive. The console cannot recover data that formatting deletes. Copy off important files first, and do not repeatedly format a drive containing data you still need.
For a new or otherwise unconfigured compatible drive:
- Connect it directly to the PS5.
- Open Settings.
- Select Storage.
- Select USB Extended Storage.
- Select Format as USB Extended Storage.
- If more than one USB drive is connected, choose Select Another USB Drive when necessary.
- Leave the console and drive powered on until formatting finishes.
If the format option does not appear, check the drive’s capacity, cable, USB speed, port, power supply, and connection method. Confirm that no other USB Extended Storage drive is connected. Update the PS5 and test another known-good drive before concluding that formatting is the solution.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFormatting will not repair a dead disk, defective enclosure, damaged cable, or unsupported controller. If the PS5 cannot detect the device at all, it may not be able to format it—and formatting may not be the correct first response.
Why the drive keeps disconnecting
Intermittent disconnections usually point to a physical, power, heat, or drive-health problem rather than a game setting. Common causes include:

- Plug and Play: The drive has been formatted. It's ready to use without software installation needed. You can save and backup any files, movies, music, photos, games and more
- Upgraded Version USB Cable: The drive with 2in1 Micro-USB 3.0 Cable, The multifunction USB cable can match different connect port and stabilize the transmission speed
- A loose, damaged, charge-only, or unreliable USB cable
- A damaged console port
- Insufficient power from a bus-powered portable HDD
- An unstable USB-to-SATA controller or enclosure
- Overheating
- Moving the drive while it is active
- An abrupt shutdown or power interruption
- A failing disk
Replace the cable, remove all hubs and extensions, try another compatible port, keep the enclosure ventilated, and avoid moving it during transfers. If disconnects continue, stop using the drive until important data has been assessed.
Safely remove the drive
While the PS5 is on, use Settings > Storage > USB Extended Storage > Safely Remove from PS5. Disconnect it only after the console confirms removal. You can also wait until the PS5’s power indicator is completely off before unplugging the drive.

What “repair” means
If the PS5 detects the drive and offers to repair it, normally allow the process to finish rather than unplugging the device. However, repair is not a guarantee that every file will survive. If repair repeatedly fails, stop using the drive and protect any recoverable data before attempting a reformat.
A repair prompt is different from a drive that is not detected at all. A missing drive requires connection, compatibility, power, port, cable, or hardware diagnosis; a repair prompt indicates that the console can see the device but has found a storage problem.
What the external drive can and cannot do
| Content | USB Extended Storage behavior |
|---|---|
| PS5 games | Can be stored, but must be copied to console storage before launching |
| PS4 games | Can be played directly from the external drive |
| Save data | Do not assume moving a game also moves its saves |
| Screenshots and clips | Manage separately; do not treat the drive as a complete backup |
To move a game, open Game Library, highlight it, press the Options button, and select Move Games and Apps. To play a stored PS5 game, return it to console storage using the copy or move command shown for that title.
USB storage is therefore best for archiving PS5 games, avoiding a full redownload, and playing PS4 games. If you want to launch PS5 games from expanded storage, install a compatible internal M.2 SSD. Sony’s PS5 storage guidance explains that compatible internal M.2 storage can store and launch PS5 and PS4 games.
Why the drive works on a computer but not the PS5
A computer can recognize a drive that the PS5 cannot use as USB Extended Storage. Possible reasons include an unsupported capacity, filesystem, partition layout, encryption, controller, enclosure, or power arrangement. The drive may also simply be formatted for ordinary computer use rather than for the PS5.
A drive prepared as PS5 USB Extended Storage is not a normal shared computer disk. To convert it back to ordinary computer storage, the PS5 path is Settings > Storage > USB Extended Storage > … (More) > Format as exFAT. This erases the extended-storage contents.

Sony says a USB Extended Storage drive previously used with a PS4 or another PS5 can generally be connected without reformatting. That does not make it a complete transfer of ownership, licenses, saves, or account data.
Game licenses remain associated with the relevant PlayStation account or disc. Installed game files are not the same as saved games, and moving a game to USB does not automatically create a backup of its saves. Use the appropriate console backup or save-data process, and consider PlayStation Plus cloud storage where your account, region, and subscription terms provide it. Sony’s US storage page currently lists 100 GB for PlayStation Plus cloud storage, but availability and terms can change.
Use Safe Mode only when the problem points to the console
Safe Mode is not the first fix for a drive that is simply absent from the Storage menu. Use it when the PS5 also shows broader storage, database, or system-software symptoms.
- Turn off the PS5 by holding the power button for three seconds.
- Wait for the power indicator to stop blinking and turn off.
- Press and hold the power button again.
- Release it after the second beep, approximately seven seconds after the first.
- Connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button.
Relevant options include Restart PS5, Repair Console Storage, Update System Software, Clear System Software Cache, and Rebuild Database. Sony says Repair Console Storage does not erase data. Rebuild Database is not a general-purpose external-drive recovery tool, so it is not guaranteed to repair USB corruption.
Do not casually choose Reset PS5 or Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software). These options delete user data. Follow Sony’s Safe Mode instructions and read each option carefully.
Determine whether the drive or PS5 is faulty
| Test result | Most likely implication |
|---|---|
| Drive fails on the PS5 but works on a computer | Compatibility, format, cable, enclosure, power, or PS5 interaction issue |
| Drive fails everywhere | Drive, enclosure, or cable failure |
| Another compatible drive works on the PS5 | The original drive or its cable is suspect |
| Several known-good drives fail | PS5 port, software, or console hardware problem |
| Drive works in only one port | Port or port-compatibility problem |
| Drive disconnects during transfers | Cable, power, heat, enclosure, or drive-health issue |
The drive is increasingly suspect if it repeatedly disconnects, reports inconsistent capacity, produces clicking or grinding noises, repeatedly asks for repair, or fails on another compatible console or computer. Do not run destructive disk tests or third-party repair utilities before protecting data.
When to contact PlayStation Support or replace the drive
Contact PlayStation Support or arrange repair when multiple compatible drives fail, the PS5 has other USB failures, storage errors continue after software troubleshooting, or Safe Mode does not resolve broader console symptoms. If only one drive fails and a known-good drive works normally, check that drive’s warranty and consider replacing the cable, enclosure, or complete drive assembly.
Choose an external HDD for inexpensive capacity, an external SSD for faster transfers and silent operation, or an internal compatible M.2 SSD when the actual goal is launching PS5 games from expanded storage. None of these choices removes the need for safe removal and backups.
