Reviews split largely over that change in emphasis: progression and approachable handling appealed to some, while others found the series’ move toward simcade racing an awkward middle ground. Since Bandai Namco ended digital distribution of the game and its DLC on PS4, Xbox One and Steam on August 24, 2025, whether it is worth playing also depends on whether you can obtain it through a legitimate route.
What did reviewers think of Project CARS 3?
There is no single consensus that captures every review. Critic summaries range from describing an entertaining racer with plentiful unlocks and “sim-lite” handling to finding its move away from simulation less satisfying. The disagreement makes more sense when the game is judged against two different expectations: a more approachable standalone racer, or a numbered sequel to a series known for simulation.

Metacritic’s PS4 listings collect reviews with differing assessments, while GameSpot lists a review by Alessandro Barbosa. Meristation describes a shift toward accessible, arcade-like controls and an uneasy space between arcade racing and realistic simulation. Those are individual editorial judgments, not a universal player verdict, and reviews cover different platforms. Why do reviews disagree?
Handling: accessible controls or less simulation depth?
Bandai Namco and developer Slightly Mad Studios presented the game as the franchise’s most accessible entry, with scalable driving assists and a redeveloped controller experience. That is the publisher’s description of its goals, not an independent assessment of how successfully the handling achieves them. Players who prioritize approachable controller racing may welcome the direction; players looking for demanding simulation may see it as a step away from what they valued in the earlier games.

In the publisher’s June 4, 2020 announcement, Slightly Mad Studios founder and CEO Ian Bell said: “While realism and authenticity continue to be at the core of the franchise, we’ve added a host of new options to ensure that Project CARS 3 is also the most accessible game in the franchise’s history.” This promotional statement explains the design intention; it should not be mistaken for a critic’s verdict. Career progression or open-ended simulation?
The publisher emphasized a career that takes players from weekend racing toward becoming a racing legend, alongside car ownership, performance upgrades and customization. That structure gives progression a central role. It is a natural draw for players who like earning cars and improving them as they advance, but less compelling for someone whose main interest is building races around simulation systems rather than pursuing unlocks.

Variety or continuity with the series?
Bandai Namco’s 2020 announcement advertised “over 200 elite-brand road and race-cars” and “over 140 global circuits,” as well as 24-hour cycles and all-season, all-weather racing. These are the publisher’s dated promotional counts, not independently recounted totals. A broad advertised selection may appeal to players seeking variety; for series fans, it does not by itself settle whether the change in handling and career emphasis is welcome.
Is Project CARS 3 worth buying or playing?
As a fit, it is most promising for someone who wants a structured, accessible racer with career progression, a garage to build and assists that can be scaled. It is a riskier choice for a player who expects a simulation-first sequel or values the earlier series identity above streamlined progression. The mixed review picture reflects that divide rather than a simple verdict that critics either liked or disliked the game.

Bandai Namco Japan’s official PS4 page lists a standard edition and a Deluxe Edition, described as the game plus season pass, and displays an Amazon.co.jp retailer reference. This is country-specific historical information, not confirmation of present stock or price. The phrase “Project CARS 3 PS4 game” may help identify listings, but check territory, disc condition, edition and current availability before buying; the publisher’s former digital listings are no longer a dependable route after the distribution end date.

The official Japanese Steam product page lists Windows requirements, 50 GB of storage and broadband internet among its specifications. Check the live store information and your system’s compatibility before relying on those details, particularly because digital distribution has ended. The page’s requirements do not establish that the game is currently purchasable through Steam.
