Project Ghost’s first gameplay showcase, on August 14, 2025, revealed an MMO built around small-group, changing-content runs called Blue Zones, alongside plans for a hub and more conventional persistent-world activities. Its future is less clear: studio head Greg Street later said Fantastic Pixel Castle was seeking a new publisher or investor after its first-party relationship with NetEase ended, then announced the studio would close on November 17, 2025. The available reports do not establish whether the game continued after that date.
What was Project Ghost?
NetEase announced Fantastic Pixel Castle in November 2023 and said the newly formed studio had begun developing Ghost, a AAA MMO set in a new fantasy universe. The studio was founded by Greg Street, previously lead systems designer on World of Warcraft and executive producer on Riot Games’ League of Legends MMO. NetEase’s announcement framed the project as an effort to communicate openly with players during development: Street said, “With Fantastic Pixel Castle and Ghost, we want to demonstrate our commitment to open communication and development in front of players.” NetEase’s announcement
What did the first gameplay showcase reveal?
The showcase took place on August 14, 2025, and its central idea was Blue Zones: instanced runs for small groups in which content could change from one visit to another. Notebookcheck’s August 16 coverage described shifting enemies, layouts, resources, NPCs, and challenges, rather than a fixed sequence of encounters.
Blue Zones: variable runs and temporary tools
Players could gather resources during a run, use them to build structures specific to that zone, and earn temporary bonuses and a run currency. Those systems were presented as features of the run itself, distinct from permanent character progression. The showcase therefore suggested a mode designed to make each small-group outing vary, rather than simply placing familiar MMO quests in a separate instance. Notebookcheck’s gameplay coverage

The game was also described as having Haven, a central hub, and planned Red Zones. Red Zones were presented as more conventional MMO spaces, with persistent progression through quests, raids, and dungeons. Together, the concepts paired variable, session-based group runs with familiar longer-term MMO activities. These were announced design plans, not confirmation that the features were completed or released. Notebookcheck’s gameplay coverage
What happened to Fantastic Pixel Castle and the project?

The closure announcement changed the outlook for development, but it did not by itself confirm that Project Ghost was cancelled or that work definitely stopped on that date. The August 2025 coverage reported no release date.
