Is Project Orion the same game as Cyberpunk 2?
Yes. In its May 28, 2025 announcement, CD PROJEKT called the project “Cyberpunk 2 – previously known under the codename Project Orion.” That makes Project Orion the project’s former codename, not a separate game. The announcement identifies it as the next game set in the Cyberpunk universe.

CD PROJEKT RED had previously described Orion as the next mainline Cyberpunk game, drawing on the foundations of the original while expanding them. Its June 2024 description is a statement of the studio’s intended direction, not a detailed account of finished features.
What does the pre-production announcement mean?
CD PROJEKT said the team had completed the conceptual phase and progressed to pre-production. In the company’s August 28, 2025 first-half update, it specified that the move took place at the beginning of Q2 2025. This is a development milestone: it does not mean the game was finished, ready to launch, or assigned a release window.

The sequence of official updates is:
- October 4, 2022: CD PROJEKT introduced Project Orion as the next Cyberpunk game and said it would be developed by its new North American studio, with Boston and Vancouver described as parts of the planned studio organization. CD PROJEKT’s strategy update.
- June 27, 2024: CD PROJEKT RED described Orion as the next mainline game and outlined its expected creative direction. The studio’s Project Orion press-center page.
- May 28, 2025: CD PROJEKT announced that concept work was complete and the project had progressed to pre-production. The company’s update.
- August 28, 2025: its first-half update dated the transition to the beginning of Q2 2025. The company’s first-half report.
The August 2025 update is the latest official development-stage report cited here. It confirms when the transition happened, but it does not confirm what stage the game had reached by October 2026.
What has CD PROJEKT said about the game itself?
In June 2024, CD PROJEKT RED said players could expect a story-rich, morally ambiguous experience in its dystopian setting, tech-infused gameplay, and visuals powered by Unreal Engine 5. Those are the studio’s stated expectations; the cited announcement does not provide finalized mechanics, a gameplay demonstration, or a complete feature list.

The 2024 press-center description says the game is being developed in-house at CD PROJEKT RED North America. Its statement that Orion would build on the original game’s foundations while expanding them is broad direction, not confirmation of specific returning characters, locations, or systems.
What is—and is not—known about a release?
The official updates cited here do not give a release date or window, confirm platforms, or establish a finalized public title beyond CD PROJEKT’s use of “Cyberpunk 2.” They also do not provide a detailed account of mechanics, budget, team size, or sales expectations. Pre-production alone cannot be used to infer any of those details.

Keep sequel-related figures separate from figures about existing releases. For example, CD PROJEKT reported that Phantom Liberty had sold over 10 million copies in its May 2025 update; that is an expansion milestone, not a sales figure for Cyberpunk 2.

Cyberpunk 2 is separate from Cyberpunk 2077, the existing narrative-driven, open-world RPG. CD PROJEKT announced an Ultimate Edition release of Cyberpunk 2077 for Nintendo Switch 2 on its June 5, 2025 launch date; that edition is not the sequel.

The company also announced a future Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime collaboration with Studio TRIGGER in August 2025. That is another project in the franchise, not a game update. The cited announcement does not establish its distribution or streaming availability.
