What Project Hail Mary is about
Science teacher Ryland Grace wakes up aboard a spacecraft with no memory of how he got there. He learns that a mysterious substance is causing the Sun to die, and that solving the mystery may be the only way to save Earth. An unexpected friendship could help him succeed. The film stars Ryan Gosling as Grace, alongside Sandra Hüller, Lionel Boyce, Ken Leung, and Milana Vayntrub. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller directed, and Drew Goddard wrote the screenplay.
Why it is being called a major sci-fi release
Amazon MGM Studios reported that the film had earned more than $680 million worldwide, including more than $343 million in the United States and Canada, after its domestic debut on March 20. The studio described it as the third-highest-grossing movie of 2026 in its July 3 update. Those are the studio’s reported figures and ranking at that time, not a live box-office tally or proof that it led every science-fiction release.

The film’s source novel
Andy Weir’s 2021 novel is the story behind the adaptation. Amazon’s book guide says the audiobook had sold more than 2 million copies and received the Audie Award for Audiobook of the Year in 2022. It also identifies physical, Kindle, and Audible editions. Amazon’s guide to the Project Hail Mary book has more on those formats.

Streaming dates are specific to each film. Peacock lists Disclosure Day, Steven Spielberg’s 2026 science-fiction film, for an October 9, 2026 streaming start. That listing is separate from Amazon MGM Studios’ report that Project Hail Mary is already streaming on Prime Video.
