Project Scorpio became the Xbox One X, released in 2017. It was designed for 4K gaming, supported Xbox One games and accessories, and could offer game-specific improvements on a 1080p TV. Microsoft also announced high-fidelity VR as a Project Scorpio goal, but the cited launch-era announcements do not establish a consumer VR headset or supported Xbox One X VR game library.
What was Project Scorpio?
Project Scorpio was the codename for the console Microsoft unveiled as Xbox One X in June 2017. Microsoft announced a November 7, 2017 launch and presented the console as a more powerful member of the Xbox One family. In its April 2017 announcement, Xbox head Phil Spencer described the design goal as “building the first true 4K console for gamers with an emphasis on compatibility so no one gets left behind.” Microsoft’s Project Scorpio announcement also cited a GPU rated at 6 teraflops; that was a Microsoft specification claim, not an independent performance measurement.
Is Project Scorpio backwards compatible?
Yes, with important distinctions between generations. Microsoft said Xbox One games and accessories would work with Xbox One X. Support for Xbox 360 and original Xbox games was a separate, curated backward-compatibility program: a game being from an older Xbox generation did not by itself guarantee that it would run.
Xbox One games and accessories
Xbox One games and accessories were part of the compatibility promise for Xbox One X. The console could also improve some existing games, but the benefits varied by title and depended on game-specific work or use of the console’s newer capabilities.

Selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox games
In October 2017, Microsoft announced that original Xbox games would join the Xbox One family’s backward-compatibility program and that selected Xbox 360 titles would receive Xbox One X enhancements. Its named initial Xbox 360 enhancement group included Assassin’s Creed, Fallout 3, Halo 3, and Oblivion. Check whether a particular title is in the supported catalog rather than assuming all games from either older generation work.
Microsoft said selected Xbox 360 titles could display at “9X the original pixel count” on Xbox One X. For the first 13 original Xbox games, it claimed “up to 16X the pixel count.” Those figures applied to the selected games described in the October 2017 announcement, not every backward-compatible title. Microsoft called its graphics-upscaling approach the “Heutchy Method”: the company said the Xbox 360 emulator could present a higher-resolution version using existing assets without changing the game code. Microsoft’s announcement of three-generation play also described its Xbox 360 backward-compatibility library at that time as nearly 400 popular games; that is a historical 2017 count, not a current catalog total.

Does Project Scorpio support 4K?
Xbox One X was designed for 4K gaming, and Microsoft marketed it as a console capable of “true 4K” games. To view 4K output, you need a 4K-capable television or display. Microsoft’s 2017 setup guidance lists 4K, 4K Ultra HD, UHD, and 2160p as common labels for that resolution. Microsoft’s 4K setup guidance says Xbox One X and Xbox One S support 4K and HDR, unlike the original Xbox One.
“Designed for 4K” does not mean every game renders at native 4K. Microsoft’s launch announcement described Xbox One X as capable of improving existing games with features such as better textures, smoother frame rates, and faster loading, but what a particular game gains depends on that title. The “Xbox One X Enhanced” designation identified games whose developers had done work or used newer tools to take advantage of the console.

Does Xbox One X work on a 1080p TV?
Yes. A 1080p television will not show a 4K image, but Microsoft said Xbox One X could still improve games on a 1080p screen. Depending on the title, possible benefits included improved textures, smoother frame rates, or faster loading. These are game-specific advantages, not a guarantee that every game will look or run differently on every 1080p setup.
The practical choice is between wanting 4K output and wanting improvements to supported games on a display you already own. If 4K viewing is the goal, use a 4K display; if you keep a 1080p TV, you can still use Xbox One X and may see title-dependent improvements.

Did Project Scorpio support VR?
In June 2016, Microsoft described Project Scorpio as pursuing “high fidelity virtual reality” alongside true 4K gaming. That statement set out an ambition for the project at the time. Microsoft’s 2017 Xbox One X launch announcement confirmed the retail console’s identity, 4K positioning, and backward compatibility, but the cited announcements do not identify a consumer VR headset for Xbox One X or establish a supported VR game lineup. The early Project Scorpio VR claim should therefore not be treated as confirmation that Xbox One X shipped as a consumer VR platform. Microsoft’s 2016 E3 briefing summary records the original Project Scorpio framing.
