Valve says Proton Experimental fixed a rare prefix corruption that could make controllers go undetected when a game was launched again using the same prefix. The changelog section is marked as available as of October 2, 2026; it also lists several game-specific fixes and early 32-bit OpenXR support.
What the prefix fix addresses
In Valve’s Proton changelog, the exact note reads: “Fixed a rare prefix corruption that caused controllers to be not detected on subsequent launches with that prefix.” A Proton prefix is the per-game Windows-compatible environment Proton uses while running a game on Linux or Steam Deck. The described symptom is narrow: a controller may not be detected on a later launch that uses the affected prefix.

Valve calls the corruption rare but does not give an affected-user count, explain its cause, or say that saves or other user data were corrupted. The note also does not say every prefix was at risk, or instruct players to delete or rebuild one. If your controller problem matches the stated symptom, try the updated Proton Experimental version before taking disruptive steps such as removing a prefix.
Other changes in this Experimental update
Valve labels the relevant changelog section “Available in Proton Experimental (as of 2026-10-02).” The same section lists compatibility work beyond the controller issue:

- 32-bit OpenXR: Valve added early support. On x86, it requires the launch environment setting
PROTON_USE_WOW64=1. “Early support” is not a guarantee that every OpenXR title or configuration will work.
The changelog includes additional game-specific entries; these examples show the range of changes, not a promise that every listed title works on every machine. Steam Deck HQ’s September 26, 2026, summary of the September 25 update also called out the CEG, Crysis/Crysis Wars, Killer7, and OpenXR items.
Does this update matter for your setup?
- Your controller disappears after relaunching a game: the prefix fix matches that symptom if the later launch uses the same prefix. It does not establish that every controller-detection problem has the same cause.
- You play one of the named games or use the affected CPU/OpenXR configuration: the relevant compatibility note may apply, but the changelog is not a system-by-system compatibility guarantee.
- You do not encounter these issues: the update may still include a fix for another game you play, but the listed changes do not imply a general performance improvement.
How to get Proton Experimental
Proton Experimental is software distributed through Steam; the update notes do not establish any need to buy hardware, accessories, or a physical product. Steam Deck HQ reported that the update should download automatically for users who already have Proton Experimental installed and described finding it through the Steam store on Steam Deck.

Valve’s changelog is the source for the exact fix and requirements. Because Experimental changelog contents can change, check Valve’s latest entry for the current status rather than treating the October 2, 2026 listing as a permanent compatibility guarantee. No independent reproduction or hands-on test of the fix is established by the cited coverage.
