If Prototype (2009) crashes on PC, first note whether it happens at launch, while starting or loading a game, or after play begins. Community reports point to CPU affinity as one possible workaround for some start or load failures on systems with more than eight logical cores; audio changes and community patches apply to narrower cases. None is a guaranteed or publisher-confirmed fix.
Identify the game and the crash
This guide is for Prototype (2009), not Prototype 2. Steam identifies it as a single-player action/adventure game developed by Radical Entertainment and published by Activision, released June 10, 2009. Its listing gives the original PC requirements: Windows XP SP3 or Windows Vista; a Core 2 Duo 2.6 GHz or Athlon 64 X2 4000+; 1 GB RAM for XP or 2 GB for Vista; a GeForce 7800 GT or Radeon X1800-class graphics card with 256 MB; DirectX 9.0c; and 8 GB of disk space. Before changing settings, record when the crash occurs and whether an error message appears. Also note your Windows version, CPU, and game version. A crash at startup, a failure when loading, and a crash after sound stutters may have different reported causes.
- At launch or during a new game/load: consider the community-reported CPU-affinity workaround below, particularly if the CPU has more than eight logical cores.
- After audio stuttering: the audio settings reported in a Steam guide may be relevant.
- Persistent crashes or other compatibility problems: community fix packages exist, but they modify game files and can be build-sensitive.
Try CPU affinity for a launch or load failure
A Windows 11 community guide associates a particular load error with CPUs that have more than eight logical cores. It describes starting Steam with restricted CPU affinity, then launching the game from the library. A separate community repository describes setting the game’s affinity based on thread count. These are user-reported workarounds, not a confirmed diagnosis for every crash. The guide author says the procedure was tested on Windows 11 22H2; it does not provide a controlled compatibility matrix or independent test data. Steam Community guide; PrototypeFix repository.

The guide’s example uses the affinity mask 0xff. That is an example, not a universal setting for every processor. Its general approach is:
- Close Steam completely.
- Create or edit a Steam shortcut so Steam starts with the guide’s CPU-affinity restriction (the example uses
0xff). - Start Steam through that shortcut, then launch Prototype from your library.
Follow the guide’s current instructions for the exact shortcut syntax and your system. If you are unsure which CPUs the mask selects, do not guess: check the guide or ask for help using your CPU’s logical-processor count. If this changes nothing, restore your usual Steam shortcut and move on to the symptom-specific checks.

Change audio settings only if sound stutter accompanies the crash
The same Steam guide suggests changing Windows’ default playback format to 44 kHz and setting the game’s sound latency to 32 ms when sound stuttering accompanies the failure. These settings are not presented as a general solution to unrelated startup or loading crashes. The guide’s stated test environment is Windows 11 22H2, and it does not establish that the settings work on every device or Windows version. Steam Community guide.
Use community fixes cautiously
Community repositories describe DLL or script changes intended to address crashes and other compatibility issues. Because these changes replace or modify game files, check the project’s current compatibility notes for the exact game build before applying anything. Do not assume a fix for one build will work with another, and keep a way to restore the original files. PrototypeFix repository.

Version changes matter: PC Gamer reported that unannounced Steam updates on September 30, 2025 temporarily broke PrototypeFix, after which its creator deployed an update. The report says the Steam updates had no accompanying patch notes or Steam news post explaining the changes. Record the exact point of failure, any error text, Windows version, CPU model and logical-processor count, and the game’s version. Include whether the audio stutters first and which change, if any, affected the result. That information is more useful than applying unrelated hardware or driver fixes without a matching symptom. The cited sources do not establish a current official fix matrix for Windows 10 or Windows 11, a published success rate for the community workarounds, or a hardware purchase that resolves the crashes.
