proximityservice.dll Errors: Windows Repair and Safe Diagnosis

proximityservice.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component, not normally a Visual C++ Redistributable or a file you should download separately. A proximityservice.dll error usually means Windows is damaged, an update is incomplete, a dependency cannot load, or an application has its own installation problem.

The safest repair is to install Windows updates, run DISM, run System File Checker, and restart. Do not copy a replacement DLL from a random download site into System32 or an application folder.

What proximityservice.dll does

Microsoft describes this component as Proximity Service Implementation. It supports Windows proximity and peer-discovery features, including APIs related to Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth proximity, and near-field interactions.

Applications that use the Windows.Networking.Proximity namespace, including Windows.Networking.Proximity.PeerFinder, can depend on this Windows component.

That does not mean every program showing the error is itself a proximity application. A damaged Windows component or missing dependency can cause a loader error when any application attempts to use the related Windows functionality.

Where the file normally belongs

On a standard installation, the normal locations are:

  • 64-bit Windows native component: %windir%System32ProximityService.dll
  • 32-bit component on 64-bit Windows: %windir%SysWOW64ProximityService.dll
  • 32-bit Windows: %windir%System32ProximityService.dll

The names can appear backwards at first. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains native 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. Windows uses file-system redirection so a 32-bit application normally accesses the correct 32-bit system location automatically. Microsoft explains this behavior in its file-system redirector documentation.

Do not select a DLL based only on its file size or version number. Architecture, Windows release, servicing state, and dependencies all matter.

What the error means

You may see variants such as:

  • “The program can’t start because proximityservice.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “There was a problem starting proximityservice.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “Error loading proximityservice.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because proximityservice.dll was not found.”
  • “proximityservice.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

These are common reported forms, not guaranteed wording.

A loader error is different from a proximity-networking failure. If an application starts but PeerFinder, Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth discovery, or another proximity API fails, the cause may be a driver, device, permission, or Windows networking problem. If Windows says the DLL is missing or cannot load, repair the Windows component first.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates

Time needed: 10–30 minutes, depending on pending updates and restart time.

Updates are the safest first step because Microsoft distributes Windows system components through Windows servicing rather than a current standalone ProximityService.dll installer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Open Windows Update.
  4. Select Check for updates.
  5. Install every applicable update.
  6. Restart when Windows requests it.
  7. Try the affected application again.

If Windows reports that a restart is pending, restart before testing. Then check for updates again, because additional updates may become available after the first installation.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. In 2026, do not assume that every Windows 10 installation will continue receiving ordinary updates. If updates are unavailable and the system is damaged, continue with DISM and SFC, then consider an in-place repair or supported upgrade path.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

Time needed: 15–45 minutes.

DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies from that repaired store.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run this command separately:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
  2. Run SFC as a separate command:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows and test the application.

SFC may report that it found and repaired corrupt files. That is a good result, but restart before testing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If SFC says it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them:

  1. Run DISM again.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Run sfc /scannow again.
  4. Restart and test the affected program.

If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, use a matching Windows installation source with DISM’s /Source option. The source must match the installed Windows edition, language, and architecture. Do not substitute a random DLL for a matching repair source.

When repeatedly hunting through repair steps and trying to determine what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can show a free scan of reported system problems; repairs are performed by the full version, and it is optional rather than required for DISM or SFC.

Microsoft documents DISM image repair and System File Checker.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine

Time needed: 5–10 minutes.

Security software may quarantine a system file after a detection or a false positive.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Windows Security and open it.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Select Protection history.
  5. Review recent actions involving ProximityService.dll.
  6. If the detection is confirmed to be a false positive and the file’s Windows provenance is clear, review the available Restore action.
  7. Restart Windows and test again.

Restoring a detected item can be unsafe. Do not restore it merely because the filename matches. If the detection is unclear, leave the item quarantined and run a full trusted security scan. Repair the Windows component with updates, DISM, and SFC instead.

Microsoft provides more information about Protection History.

Fix 4: Repair or reinstall the affected application

Time needed: 10–30 minutes.

If the error appears only when starting one application, the application may be damaged or may be shipping a private copy of a dependency. This is especially likely when other Windows programs work normally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a supported Microsoft Store or packaged application:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Choose Apps.
  4. Open Installed apps.
  5. Find the affected application.
  6. Select the three-dot menu.
  7. Choose Advanced options.
  8. Select Repair, if available.
  9. Start the application again.

If Repair does not help, use Reset only if you understand that it may remove the application’s local data or settings.

For a traditional desktop application:

  1. Obtain the installer from the application publisher’s official source.
  2. Uninstall the affected application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Install the current version.
  5. Start it again.

Do not place proximityservice.dll beside the program executable as a workaround. If the program requires a private copy, its official installer should provide it.

If the error names a Visual C++ file separately, such as vcruntime*.dll, msvcp*.dll, or concrt*.dll, address that separate runtime problem through the application’s official installer or Microsoft’s supported runtime guidance. ProximityService.dll itself is not normally a Visual C++ Redistributable file. Microsoft lists the relevant runtime file families in its DLL redistribution guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 5: Check architecture and file location

Time needed: 5–15 minutes.

A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows normally uses 32-bit system files through SysWOW64. A 64-bit application uses the native files in System32.

An incorrect manually copied file can cause:

  • “The specified module could not be found”
  • “The application was unable to start correctly”
  • “Not designed to run on Windows”
  • Entry-point errors
  • A crash immediately after launch

To check the Windows architecture:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select About.
  4. Review System type.

To inspect the normal locations:

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Enter %windir%System32.
  3. Look for ProximityService.dll.
  4. On 64-bit Windows, also inspect %windir%SysWOW64.

Do not delete, rename, or replace either copy. If one is missing, restore it through Windows Update, DISM, or SFC. If a copy exists outside the Windows directory, treat it as an application-private copy or a possible counterfeit until its digital signature and source are verified.

Fix 6: Repair the network or Bluetooth driver

Time needed: 10–30 minutes.

This step is more relevant when proximity features fail after the application opens, rather than when Windows reports a missing DLL.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Network adapters.
  4. Expand Bluetooth.
  5. Look for a warning icon.
  6. Right-click the affected adapter.
  7. Select Update driver.
  8. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  9. Restart Windows.

If Windows cannot find a driver, obtain the correct package from the computer or adapter manufacturer. Match the model and Windows architecture. Avoid generic driver packages that do not identify the hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When checking many machines or manually identifying which network and Bluetooth drivers are stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can show a free scan of driver problems; the full version performs driver installation, but it is optional and does not replace Windows component repair.

Do not treat a driver reinstall as the primary response to a loader error naming proximityservice.dll.

Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent system change

Time needed: 20–60 minutes.

If the problem began immediately after a driver installation, update, application installation, or other system change, System Restore may reverse the change without removing personal documents.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Create a restore point.
  3. Open the result.
  4. Select System Restore.
  5. Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
  6. Review the affected programs and drivers.
  7. Confirm the restore.
  8. Let Windows restart and complete the process.

System Restore can revert system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs. It does not normally affect personal files, but back up important work first. If no restore point exists, use the other repair paths.

Historical Windows 8.1 exception

Microsoft documented a specific Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 proximity problem after update 2919355. Applications using PeerFinder could return:

PeerFinder.ConnectAsync() returned with exception:
System.Exception: The enumeration value is out of range.
HRESULT: 0x800706F5

Microsoft attributed that issue to the update not including an updated ProximityService.dll and directed affected systems to update rollup KB2984006. Historical package names included:

  • Windows8.1-KB2984006-x86.msu
  • Windows8.1-KB2984006-x64.msu
  • Windows8.1-KB2984006-arm.msu

That is a historical Windows 8.1 servicing case, not a recommendation to install an old DLL or package on Windows 10 or Windows 11. On newer Windows versions, use the applicable Windows updates and repair tools.

Why you should not use regsvr32

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly ActiveX or COM components. It is not a general-purpose “install DLL” command.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ProximityService.dll is a Windows service-related system component, so registering it is not normally appropriate. A failed regsvr32 command does not prove that the file is missing or that Windows needs a different copy. Microsoft explains the command’s scope in its regsvr32 documentation.

If the file exists but the error remains

“The specified module could not be found” can refer to a dependency of ProximityService.dll, not necessarily the named file itself.

Use this order:

  1. Run DISM and SFC.
  2. Confirm that the affected application matches the Windows architecture it requires.
  3. Check Windows Event Viewer for the application error and module name.
  4. Review antivirus Protection History.
  5. Repair or reinstall the affected application.
  6. Update relevant Wi-Fi Direct or Bluetooth drivers if the application opens but proximity features fail.

If DISM and SFC cannot repair Windows, back up important files and use a matching installation source, an in-place repair installation, or Windows Recovery Environment. Avoid deleting system files or replacing them with copies from another computer.

Common causes and the appropriate fix

Likely cause Appropriate response
Damaged or missing Windows component Windows Update, DISM, then SFC
Incomplete Windows update Install pending updates and restart
Wrong architecture or copied DLL Remove the workaround and repair Windows servicing
Antivirus quarantine Review Protection History cautiously
One damaged application Repair or reinstall that application
Proximity feature failure without loader error Update network, Wi-Fi Direct, or Bluetooth drivers
Recent system change Use System Restore
Broader corruption or malware Trusted security scan, then Windows repair

The ranking is a troubleshooting guide, not a published failure-rate measurement.

FAQ

Is proximityservice.dll a virus?

The genuine Windows component is a Microsoft file normally located in the Windows system directories and carrying Microsoft Windows metadata and a Microsoft signature. A file with the same name in an application folder or download directory requires separate verification.

Do I need Visual C++ Redistributable?

Normally, no. ProximityService.dll is a Windows component, not a normal Visual C++ runtime file. Install or repair Visual C++ only when the error separately names a Visual C++ runtime.

Can I download proximityservice.dll?

Do not download an isolated copy from a random DLL archive. It may contain malware, use the wrong architecture, belong to a different Windows build, or leave the underlying component-store problem unresolved. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Windows Recovery, or the official application installer.

Should I copy it to System32?

No. Manual copying can create version and architecture mismatches and can damage a protected Windows installation. Restore the component through Windows servicing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is this a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth driver error?

Not necessarily. A loader error means Windows or an application cannot load a required module. Driver problems are more likely when the application starts but proximity, Wi-Fi Direct, or Bluetooth functionality fails afterward.

What is the safest next step?

Install all available Windows updates, run DISM, run sfc /scannow, restart, and then repair the affected application if the error occurs only there.
