prvdmofcomp.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component associated with Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI). If Windows reports that prvdmofcomp.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows first rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

What prvdmofcomp.dll is

Item What to know
Component Windows Management Instrumentation
Operating system Microsoft Windows
Normal role Supports WMI-related provider and schema operations
Normal location Windows system directories, commonly beneath %WINDIR%System32Wbem
Architecture 64-bit and 32-bit Windows copies may be present
Recommended repair Windows Update, DISM, and System File Checker

WMI is a Windows operating-system service used by applications, drivers, hardware-management utilities, and Windows services to query system information. WMI providers use DLLs and Managed Object Format files, so an application may expose the problem even though it does not own prvdmofcomp.dll. Microsoft describes this WMI architecture in its official WMI documentation.

The file is not normally a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET assembly, or game-specific DLL. Public file inventories identify it as WMI and associate it with Microsoft Windows. Historical inventories contain multiple Windows-build versions, so do not choose a replacement based only on a filename, version number, or file size.

First, do not download the DLL

Do not download prvdmofcomp.dll from a random DLL repository or copy it from another computer. That can introduce:

  • A DLL from the wrong Windows build
  • A 32-bit file where a 64-bit file is required, or the reverse
  • An invalid or modified file
  • A missing dependency that leaves the original problem unresolved
  • Malware placed in a system directory

There is no authoritative Microsoft download page for this DLL as an individual file. The safe sources are Windows Update, Windows component repair, System Restore, or official Windows installation media.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart

A failed or incomplete update can leave Windows components mismatched or missing.

  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. In Windows 11, select Windows Update.
In Windows 10, select Update & Security, then Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install every applicable update.
  5. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
  6. Try the application or service that produced the error again.

If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC. Do not repeatedly reinstall the affected application before repairing Windows, especially if several programs show similar errors.

Windows 11 repair reinstall

Windows 11 may offer a repair reinstall that preserves applications, files, and settings:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select Recovery.
  4. Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
  5. Select Reinstall now.
  6. Follow the prompts and restart when Windows finishes.

If this option is unavailable, use the command-line repair steps below.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

DISM repairs the Windows component store. System File Checker then checks protected Windows files and replaces damaged or missing copies from that repaired store.

Open an elevated Command Prompt

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.

Run these commands separately:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Wait for DISM to reach completion. Then run:

sfc /scannow

Do not close the window while either command is working. Restart Windows after both commands finish.

Interpret the result

SFC commonly reports one of these outcomes:

  • Did not find any integrity violations: Windows protected files were not detected as corrupted.
  • Found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test the affected application.
  • Found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM again after confirming that Windows Update works, then run SFC again.
  • Could not perform the requested operation: Restart into Safe Mode and repeat the scan, or proceed to System Restore and an in-place repair.

A successful SFC scan does not prove that every application dependency or WMI provider registration is healthy. It does, however, rule out or repair many Windows-file problems that cause this loader error.

  • 256 GB SSD of storage.
  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.

Manually comparing Windows builds and repeating DISM and SFC can be time-consuming when the cause is unclear. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that shows what it identifies; repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and Windows repair remains the direct first-line fix.

Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file

If the error began immediately after a security scan, Windows Security may have quarantined the file.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security and open it.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Select Protection history.
  5. Review recent detections.
  6. Expand any detection related to prvdmofcomp.dll.
  7. Check the detected file path and publisher before taking action.

Restore the file only when all of the following are true:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

  • It was located in an expected Windows directory.
  • Its digital signature identifies Microsoft as the signer.
  • A current security assessment supports that the detection was a false positive.
  • The file has not appeared in an application-writable folder or temporary directory.

Microsoft warns that restoring a genuine threat can expose the computer. If the file is unsigned, has a suspicious location, or reappears after removal, leave it quarantined and run a full Microsoft Defender scan.

Fix 4: Determine whether one application or driver is only exposing the problem

If prvdmofcomp.dll appears only when one program starts, that does not prove the program installed or owns the file. The program may simply be the first component to make a WMI query.

Test the scope:

  1. Start another application that uses system or hardware information.
  2. Open Event Viewer by pressing Win + R, typing eventvwr.msc, and pressing Enter.
  3. Review Windows Logs > Application and Windows Logs > System around the time of the failure.
  4. Note whether the error names a driver, hardware utility, service, or application.

If Windows repair completes successfully and only one program still fails:

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11.
In Windows 10, open Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
  2. Select the affected application.
  3. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  4. Select Repair.
  5. If Repair does not help, select Reset only after confirming that the application can recreate its settings.
  6. If neither option exists, uninstall the program.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Download the latest installer from the application developer’s official website and reinstall it.

For a game, use its launcher’s file verification only if the launcher installs a private copy of the DLL or another private component. Verification cannot replace the normal Windows system copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 5: Update or reinstall a related driver

A hardware-management program, sensor utility, printer package, or device driver may be the component that triggers the WMI error.

Identify the device

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand categories related to the hardware involved, such as Display adapters, Network adapters, Bluetooth, Printers, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  4. Right-click the suspected device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Review the General tab for an error code.
  7. Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.

Install drivers from the computer manufacturer or device manufacturer. Avoid replacing prvdmofcomp.dll as a way to repair a driver.

Rank #3

If the problem began after a driver update:

  1. In Device Manager, right-click the device.
  2. Select Properties > Driver.
  3. Select Roll Back Driver, if available.
  4. Restart and test again.

When several devices have stale drivers, manually identifying the correct package can mean hunting through model numbers and hardware revisions. Outbyte Driver Updater offers a free scan showing the drivers it identifies; installation is performed by the full version. It is optional, and the device manufacturer’s official driver remains the preferred source.

Fix 6: Check the correct 32-bit or 64-bit Windows copy

On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit system binaries, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit equivalents used through WOW64 redirection. The names are confusing, but the folders are not interchangeable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A 32-bit application normally uses the 32-bit system environment. A 64-bit application uses the 64-bit environment. Do not copy a DLL between these folders manually.

To check the Windows architecture:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System > About.
  3. Review System type.

To inspect the file without replacing it:

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Enter %WINDIR%System32Wbem in the address bar.
  3. Search for prvdmofcomp.dll.
  4. Right-click the file and select Properties.
  5. Review Digital Signatures and Details, if available.

If the file exists but Windows says “the specified module could not be found,” the missing item may be a dependency rather than prvdmofcomp.dll itself. A damaged dependency, incompatible system file, or incorrect architecture can produce the same loader message.

Fix 7: Use System Restore

Use System Restore when the failure began after a recent update, driver installation, cleanup operation, or system change and a restore point is available.

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Confirm the restore point.
  6. Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.

System Restore does not normally remove personal documents, but it can remove recently installed applications, drivers, and updates. Review the affected-program list before confirming.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 8: Perform an in-place Windows repair

If DISM, SFC, updates, and System Restore do not repair the component, use official Windows installation media for an in-place repair.

  1. Obtain Windows installation media from Microsoft.
  2. Start Windows normally.
  3. Mount the ISO or open the installation media.
  4. Run setup.exe.
  5. Choose the option to keep personal files and apps.
  6. Continue through setup and allow Windows to restart.

Back up important files first. An in-place repair is different from a clean installation. Do not select an option that removes applications and files unless you have deliberately chosen a clean reinstall.

What not to do

Do not run regsvr32 as a general fix

regsvr32 is a COM registration tool for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. prvdmofcomp.dll is not established as a self-registering COM DLL, so this command is not a standard repair:

regsvr32 prvdmofcomp.dll

It may produce another error without repairing Windows. Use DISM and SFC instead.

Do not rebuild the WMI repository immediately

A missing or damaged system DLL does not automatically mean the WMI repository is corrupt. Rebuilding or resetting the repository indiscriminately can remove provider registrations and create additional problems.

Do not install unrelated redistributables

Visual C++ packages, DirectX packages, and .NET runtimes are not the appropriate first repair for this Windows WMI component. Install a runtime only when the affected application’s official requirements specifically identify it.

Do not delete the file

Deleting prvdmofcomp.dll can make WMI-dependent services and applications fail more broadly. If the file is outside an expected Windows directory or lacks a valid Microsoft signature, investigate it as a possible unauthorized copy instead of deleting system files blindly.

FAQ

Is prvdmofcomp.dll legitimate?

Yes. It is a genuine Windows WMI component associated with Microsoft Windows. Verify the path and Microsoft digital signature if a security product flags it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a game normally install it?

There is no evidence that one particular game owns or normally installs this DLL. A game or application may simply be the first program to expose a damaged Windows WMI component.

Why does Windows say “specified module could not be found” when the file exists?

The loader may be unable to find a dependency required by the DLL. The message does not always mean that the named file itself is absent.

Should I download a different version?

No. Windows builds and architectures differ, and a manually copied DLL may be mismatched or unsafe. Repair the Windows image through Microsoft’s built-in servicing tools.

Do I need to register the DLL?

Normally no. regsvr32 is not a general-purpose missing-DLL repair command and should not be used here without evidence that registration is required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the error affects only one application?

After Windows Update, DISM, and SFC complete, repair or reinstall that application using its official installer. If a driver or hardware utility triggers the error, update or reinstall that package from the device manufacturer.
