dps.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system component used by the Diagnostic Policy Service, not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX file, .NET library, or game-specific runtime. If Windows or an application says dps.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
What dps.dll does
The file belongs to Windows Diagnostic Policy Service, commonly called DPS. This service detects, troubleshoots, and helps resolve problems affecting Windows components. Microsoft identifies DPS as a built-in service that is normally installed and configured for automatic startup.

The legitimate file normally resides in:
%SystemRoot%System32dps.dll
On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. The names are confusing, so do not assume that SysWOW64 contains 64-bit files.
Version and architecture notes
| What you find | What it means |
|---|---|
64-bit file in %SystemRoot%System32 |
Normal location for a 64-bit Windows system component |
| 32-bit file used by a 32-bit process | Windows handles this through its file-system redirection rules |
| File from an older Windows build | It may be incompatible even if the filename matches |
| No file, damaged file, or invalid signature | Repair Windows servicing rather than copying a replacement |
Historical inventories mention builds such as 10.0.10586.0, 6.3.9600.16384, 6.2.9200.16384, 6.1.7601.17514, and 6.0.6001.18000. These are not a complete Microsoft compatibility list. Do not select a download based only on a version number, file size, or bitness.

Recognize the error you have
You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because dps.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “There was a problem starting dps.dll.”
- “Error loading dps.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because dps.dll was not found.”
- “dps.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These messages can appear when an application starts even though the DLL belongs to Windows. The application may be calling a Windows diagnostic component, or the damaged system file may be exposing a broader Windows servicing problem.
A different condition is the message “Diagnostic Policy Service is not running.” That usually means the file exists but the service is stopped, disabled, misconfigured, or unable to start. Check the service separately before assuming the DLL is missing.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
A pending or interrupted update can leave protected Windows files inconsistent.
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- On Windows 10, open Update & Security → Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Try the affected application or service again.
If Windows Update reports an error, restart once more and check again. If updates repeatedly fail, continue with DISM and SFC below.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the primary repair for a genuinely missing or corrupted dps.dll.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then uses that repaired store to restore protected system files. Run them in that order.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes when User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears paused.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application or check DPS again.
Success usually means SFC reports that it found no integrity violations or found corrupt files and repaired them. If SFC says it could not repair some files, restart and run the two commands again after Windows Update completes. If DISM reports that source files could not be found, repair Windows Update first or use official installation media as a repair source.

Its free scan identifies problems, while repair actions are handled by the full version; it is optional, and DISM plus SFC remain the normal Microsoft repair path.
Fix 3: Check the Diagnostic Policy Service
If the error says that Diagnostic Policy Service is not running, use the Services console.
- Press Win + R.
- Type:
services.msc
- Press Enter.
- Find Diagnostic Policy Service.
- Double-click it.
- Set Startup type to Automatic.
- Select Start.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Restart Windows and test again.
If the Start button is unavailable, or the service starts and immediately stops, open an elevated Command Prompt and run:
sc.exe query DPS
sc.exe config DPS start= auto
sc.exe start DPS
The space after start= is required. A successful query should show the DPS service state. If it cannot start, record the exact error and continue with DISM and SFC rather than repeatedly forcing the service.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo not disable DPS. Windows diagnostics depend on this service, and disabling it can remove troubleshooting functionality without repairing the underlying problem.
Fix 4: Check Microsoft Defender Protection History
Security software can quarantine a genuine system file, especially after detecting a tampered or replaced copy.
- Open Start → Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent quarantined or blocked items.
- Expand any item that mentions
dps.dll. - Confirm the file path before taking action.
- Run a full Microsoft Defender scan.
Do not restore a file solely because its name is dps.dll. A malicious file can use the same name. Restore or allow it only when the path is the normal Windows location, the file has a valid Microsoft signature, and a clean scan supports the decision. If the file was tampered with, let Windows servicing replace it through DISM and SFC instead.
Fix 5: Repair the affected application
Application repair is appropriate when only one program fails and Windows services work normally. Reinstalling an application is not the standard method for restoring a Windows system DLL, but it can replace damaged application files or correct a broken dependency configuration.
On Windows 11:
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Apps → Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, if available.
- Start the program again.
If Repair does not help, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and install it again using the developer’s official installer. Back up application data first if the program stores local projects or settings.
For a game, open its official launcher and use its file-verification feature. In Epic Games Launcher:

Use System Restore when the problem began immediately after a driver installation, Windows update, cleanup utility, or other software change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Win + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Choose a different restore point if necessary.
- Select a restore point from before the failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next → Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not normally remove personal documents, but it can remove recently installed applications, drivers, and updates. If no suitable restore point exists, return to Windows servicing repairs.
Fix 7: Repair or reinstall a driver only for an independent device problem
A driver is not normally the source of dps.dll. DPS diagnoses Windows components; it is not a network, audio, graphics, or chipset driver. Do not reinstall drivers merely because this DLL error appeared.
Use Device Manager only when a separate device problem exists:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties and read the Device status message.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Use Update Driver, Roll Back Driver, or Uninstall Device only when the device itself requires it.
- Restart Windows and install the driver from the device manufacturer when necessary.
When checking many devices manually would mean hunting versions and guessing which driver is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver updates. Its free scan shows findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and is not a primary dps.dll repair.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, and driver packages generally do not restore this Windows component. Install one of those only when the error also names a dependency such as MSVCP140.dll, VCRUNTIME140.dll, or a specific DirectX file.
Fix 8: Use Windows repair installation
If DISM and SFC repeatedly fail, Windows Update is damaged, or the file remains invalid, use a repair installation instead of manually replacing the DLL.
On Windows 11, check for the built-in option:
- Open Settings.
- Select System → Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the current Windows version and repairs system files and components while preserving apps, files, and settings when the option is available.
If the option is unavailable, use official Windows installation media. Start Windows normally, mount the Microsoft ISO or open the installation media, run setup.exe, and choose to keep personal files and apps when offered. Back up important data first and read every retention choice carefully.

Do not download dps.dll from a random DLL site
An isolated download may be unsigned, infected, the wrong architecture, or from a different Windows build. Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, an application folder, or a game folder can create a new compatibility or security problem while leaving the damaged component store untouched.
There is no legitimate Microsoft standalone dps.dll download package. Safe restoration sources are Windows Update, DISM and SFC, System Restore, official Windows installation media, or a verified antivirus quarantine workflow.
Do not run regsvr32 as a routine repair
regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. dps.dll is a service component, not a normal self-registering application library. Running commands such as these is not a repair:
regsvr32 dps.dll
regsvr32 %SystemRoot%System32dps.dll
A registration error does not mean the file is missing or fixed.

Do not replace files across architectures or Windows builds
A 32-bit file is not a substitute for a 64-bit system component, and a file from another Windows release may not match the installed servicing baseline. Let Windows restore the matching file.
If the error continues
Collect this information before contacting support:
- The complete error message
- The executable or service that reports it
- Your Windows edition, version, and build
- The exact path of any
dps.dllfile found - Whether the file has a valid Microsoft digital signature
- The final DISM result
- The final SFC result
- Any Defender Protection History entry
- Relevant errors in Event Viewer → Windows Logs → System
- Whether the issue affects every application or only one
You can also inspect:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
That log may identify files SFC could not repair. If all system repairs fail, use Windows repair installation rather than copying dps.dll from an untrusted source.
