Choose based on the games and devices you actually use. PlayStation Plus is the natural fit for PlayStation players who want monthly games and a rotating console library; its Premium tier adds classics, trials and streaming in supported markets. Xbox Game Pass covers console, PC and supported devices, with day-one releases on Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Neither service is a universal winner: check the specific games, your region’s current price and how long you expect to subscribe.

What each PlayStation Plus tier includes
Sony’s U.S. plan page displayed the following prices on October 4, 2026. Membership continues until canceled; check local checkout for your territory and account.
| Plan | What it adds | Displayed U.S. price |
|---|---|---|
| Essential | Monthly games, online multiplayer, Store discounts, Share Play, cloud storage and exclusive content | $10.99/month; $27.99/3 months; $79.99/12 months |
| Extra | Essential benefits, the Game Catalog (described as hundreds of games, with regular additions) and Ubisoft+ Classics | $16.99/month; $43.99/3 months; $134.99/12 months |
| Premium | Lower-tier benefits, Classics Catalog, selected game trials, cloud streaming and Sony Pictures Catalog | $19.99/month; $54.99/3 months; $159.99/12 months |
Essential is the baseline choice if monthly selections and online multiplayer are what you need. Extra is the step up for downloadable Game Catalog titles. Sony says PS4 games will be added to that catalog only intermittently from January 2026, so don’t assume a steady stream of PS4 additions.

- Redeem for anything on PlayStationStore: games, add-ons, PlayStationPlus and more.
- Everything you want to play. Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content.

Premium is a specific feature upgrade, not simply a larger version of Extra. Sony says it is unavailable in some territories; the listed streaming benefit excludes overseas territories. Streaming guidance is at least 5 Mbps, rising to 15 Mbps for 1080p. Sony’s FAQ identifies PS4/PS5 and PC streaming, but titles and features vary. Most catalog titles can be downloaded; classic PS3 games are streaming-only, and PS5 games require a PS5 for download. Monthly games remain playable while membership is active, while catalog and classics titles can leave the service.
What each Xbox Game Pass tier includes
The Xbox U.S. plan page accessed October 4, 2026 displayed price placeholders rather than verifiable numeric prices. The figures below are the page’s plan specifications, not independent counts; the library, features and availability can change by region, platform and tier.
Rank #2
- Redeem for anything on PlayStationStore: games, add-ons, PlayStationPlus and more.
- Everything you want to play. Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content.
- Use gift card funds to contribute towards PlayStationPlus memberships.
| Plan | Games and release access | Other listed benefits | Monthly cloud playtime |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | 50+ games; no new-release games on day one, according to the page FAQ | In-game benefits and online console multiplayer | 5 hours |
| Premium | 200+ games across console, PC and supported devices; selected Xbox-published titles enter within one year of launch | In-game benefits and online console multiplayer | 10 hours |
| Ultimate | 500+ games across console, PC and supported devices; new games on day one | EA Play, Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ Classics, in-game benefits and online console multiplayer | 15 hours |
| PC Game Pass | 300+ games on PC; new games on day one | EA Play and in-game benefits; the page lists no monthly cloud limit for this plan | Not included as a monthly cloud-hours allowance |
If you play only on PC, compare PC Game Pass rather than assuming an Xbox console tier is necessary. If you want console multiplayer, check that the particular plan you choose includes it. Game access ends when the subscription expires or a title leaves the library. Recurring billing is on by default; Xbox says it can be switched off through a Microsoft account or console.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which service fits your situation?
You primarily play on PlayStation
Start with PS Plus. Essential covers monthly games and online multiplayer; choose Extra if you expect to play from its rotating catalog. Premium makes sense when you specifically want its classics, selected trials or supported cloud streaming. Don’t pay for Premium on the assumption that it promises day-one PlayStation Studios launches.
Rank #3
- Redeem for anything on PlayStationStore: games, add-ons, PlayStationPlus and more.
- Everything you want to play. Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content.
- Use gift card funds to contribute towards PlayStationPlus memberships.
You play on Xbox and want new releases at launch
Ultimate is the Xbox tier that lists new games on day one, and also bundles EA Play, Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics. If you are considering a less expensive tier, distinguish Premium’s selected Xbox-published games within one year from day-one access; Essential does not list day-one new releases.
You play on PC
PC Game Pass is the directly relevant PC-only plan and lists day-one games and EA Play. Game Pass Ultimate is broader across console, PC and supported devices, but whether that breadth is useful depends on what you own and will play. Compare current checkout prices rather than assuming one plan is better value from catalog counts alone.
Rank #4
- Redeem for anything on PlayStationStore: games, add-ons, PlayStationPlus and more.
- Everything you want to play. Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content.
- Use gift card funds to contribute towards PlayStationPlus memberships.
You want cloud gaming
Compare the supported territory and device first, then the plan’s network and time conditions. PS Plus Premium sets a minimum network guidance of 5 Mbps, or 15 Mbps for 1080p, with territory and title variation. Xbox’s current U.S. page lists 5, 10 and 15 hours per month for Essential, Premium and Ultimate respectively. Those monthly allowances make the Xbox tier important if you expect to stream regularly; the cited PC Game Pass listing does not include a monthly cloud-hours allowance.
Quick Recap
How to compare the real value before subscribing
- List your devices. Decide whether you will play on PlayStation, Xbox, PC or supported cloud devices. A plan’s extra platform coverage matters only if you can use it.
- Check the exact games. Search the live catalog for games you intend to play, then check whether they are available on your platform and tier. A headline count does not tell you whether the library fits your taste.
- Check timing and removals. If launch-day access matters, verify the tier’s release terms. For any rotating catalog, play priority titles while they are available; subscription access is not permanent ownership.
- Compare your actual checkout total. Compare the same billing period, regional taxes and any current offer. Sony displayed U.S. prices on its page, while Xbox’s page showed placeholders at access, so a reliable current numeric comparison is not established here.
- Account for renewal. Both services continue or recur unless canceled or switched off. If subscribing for a particular game or a short period, note the renewal setting and date.
