A PS Portal that will not turn on needs different troubleshooting from one that starts but cannot connect to your PS5. First note whether a logo appears, whether the problem happens only while charging, whether you see an error code, and whether you can open Settings. Then follow the matching steps below. Sony’s guidance offers several symptom-specific fixes, not one universal solution.
Identify what is going wrong
- No power or black screen: The Portal does not reach its lock screen or show a logo.
- Crash or restart while charging: The issue occurs when the charging cable is connected, perhaps even though the Portal otherwise starts.
- Remote Play connection failure: The Portal starts, but cannot connect to the PS5 or loses its connection during play.
If you see an error code, note it for PlayStation Support. The steps here do not identify a particular error code or establish a single cause for every Portal crash.
Update the Portal, then restart it
If you can operate the Portal, start with its system software. Sony says updating usually fixes most issues. Open Quick Menu > Settings > System > System Software > Update System Software and follow the prompts. Keep the Portal connected to power during an update, and do not interrupt it.
Software availability can vary by region and change over time. Sony’s retrieved US release-notes page listed version 7.0.2, but that number should not be treated as the latest version everywhere. Check the version offered on your Portal or on your regional PlayStation support page: US PS Portal system software features and PlayStation Canada update instructions.

Next, hold the power button and choose Restart. If the Portal will not respond to that option, hold the power button until it turns off, wait 30 seconds, then hold the button again to turn it on. Sony’s general troubleshooting guidance is at How to troubleshoot issues on your PS Portal.
If the PS Portal will not turn on
- Connect the Portal to the PS5 with the USB cable included with the Portal and allow it to charge.
- Hold the Portal’s power button until it turns on.
If the included cable is missing or damaged and the Portal will not charge, a compatible replacement cable may be needed. Sony’s power-on instructions specify the included cable; they do not establish that a particular third-party cable or model will fix a software or connection problem. If the Portal still shows no sign of power after charging, contact PlayStation Support or Repairs.
If the Portal crashes or restarts while charging
Use Sony’s charging-specific recovery sequence rather than starting with a full reset:

The published steps are on PlayStation’s accessories support page.

A Portal that starts successfully but cannot connect has a Remote Play or network problem, not a boot failure. Check the PS5 and account settings first:
- Make sure Remote Play is enabled on the PS5.
- Confirm that the Portal and PS5 are signed in to the same account.
- Check that the PS5 is connected to the internet.
- If you want to connect while the PS5 is in Rest Mode, enable the console settings that keep it connected to the internet and allow it to be turned on from the network.

If Remote Play is unstable or keeps disconnecting
Once the console settings are correct, check whether the problem is the Wi-Fi connection or the Portal itself:
- Verify that other devices can use the same Wi-Fi network.
- Check PlayStation service status.
- Pause downloads that may be using network capacity.
- Move the Portal closer to the router.
- Where possible, connect the PS5 to the router by Ethernet.
Sony recommends at least 5 Mbps upload and download as a standard connection speed, and at least 15 Mbps upload and download for best performance. These are Sony’s recommendations, not a guarantee of stable Remote Play; speed alone does not diagnose every connection issue. See Sony’s network troubleshooting guidance.
When to reset the PS Portal
Try the update and restart steps before resetting. A reset erases the Portal’s data and settings and signs you out, so use it only if simpler steps have not helped and you are prepared to set up the device again.
- Open Quick Menu > Settings > System > System Software > Reset Options.
- Select Reset and confirm.
If you cannot complete a system software update, or the Portal still has persistent power, software, or hardware symptoms, contact PlayStation Support or Repairs. Avoid unofficial update files.
