PS Portal settings to check after a system software update

By VGSources Team 7 min read

After a PlayStation Portal system update, first verify the version installed on the device, then read the release notes for that version. Recheck battery, audio, display, controller, network and PS5 Remote Play settings before you start a long session. Updates can add controls such as 3D Audio or an 80% charge limit, while a Portal update does not change the PS5-side settings required for Remote Play.

1. Confirm which version is actually installed

Do not rely only on a regional support page or on the version you expected to install. The Portal itself is the authoritative place to begin. Swipe left from the upper-right edge of the screen to open the Quick Menu, then select Settings > System > System Software > Device Information. Record the system software version shown there.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Use that number when reading Sony’s release notes. Support pages can show different releases by region, and an update may have installed more than one package. Sony says this is normal when a device starts from an older version: it may need several updates before later updates can be installed in one step.

If the version is not what you expected, restart the Portal, reconnect it to a stable network and check the same Device Information screen again. If the discrepancy remains, use the PlayStation Support route for your region rather than downloading a file from an unofficial site.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

2. Check what changed in the release notes

Release notes tell you which settings are worth revisiting instead of making you search every menu. The regional pages checked for this guide did not display an identical latest release. One official page listed version 7.3.0, while the US page listed version 7.0.2. That difference does not prove that every account or device in either region has that version. Match the notes to the number in Device Information and to your regional support page.

Version noted by Sony Setting or feature described What to check on the Portal
7.3.0 (listed on the Croatia regional page) A control to turn 3D Audio on or off while playing a game; live search results; QR continuation to PlayStation Store; general performance and usability improvements. Open Settings > System > 3D Audio and decide whether the new audio mode suits your headphones or speakers.
7.1.7 (listed in previous notes) An 80% default battery charge limit, with an option to change the limit. Open Settings > System > Battery. Confirm the limit and understand the effect of raising it above 80%.
7.0.2 (listed on the US regional page at the time checked) The page included 7.0.0 and older update details, but did not display the 7.3.0 notes visible on the Croatia page. Use the Portal’s installed version, not the headline number on another country’s page, as your reference.

Sony Interactive Entertainment says it “strongly recommends always installing the latest update as soon as possible after the update is released.” That is a recommendation to keep the device current, not a promise that every region receives an identical release on the same day.

3. Revisit battery and charging controls

Check the charge limit

If your installed software includes the battery feature described in version 7.1.7, go to Settings > System > Battery. Sony described an 80% limit as the default after that update. The setting may allow a higher limit, but Sony warns that selecting more than 80% can affect battery performance and overall stability and may reduce long-term battery health. The exact control and availability are version-dependent, so use what your device currently displays rather than assuming every Portal has the same options.

Charge safely before another update

Keep the Portal charged before starting an installation. Sony warns against beginning an update with insufficient battery power and against turning the device off while installation is in progress. The Portal includes a charging cable; you do not need to buy another cable to update or inspect settings.

If you use a replacement cable or adapter, Sony recommends the included Portal or PS5 cable. A different cable must comply with USB standards, and Sony notes that not all cables function properly. Its hardware manual specifies a USB Power Delivery AC adapter with a USB-C output of at least 5 V/3 A for charging. Treat that as a minimum stated output, not as a requirement to purchase a particular charger.

4. Check audio, display and controller behavior

3D Audio

On software that exposes the feature, open Settings > System > 3D Audio. Turn it on or off while playing and keep the option that produces the clearest positional cues for your headphones or listening setup. If a game suddenly sounds wider, more distant or less natural after the update, this is the first setting to compare.

Display and indicators

Open the display controls and check brightness after the update. Revisit the light-bar and mute-indicator behavior as well, particularly if you play in a dark room or depend on the indicator to confirm microphone status. A software update can restore a default or expose a control that was not previously visible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Vibration and trigger effects

Check the controller options for vibration and adaptive-trigger intensity. Lower levels can make long sessions more comfortable and reduce distractions; higher levels preserve the tactile effects a game supports. These preferences affect the Portal experience and do not change the game’s own accessibility or control settings.

PlayStation Link devices

If you use a PlayStation Link headset or earbuds, open Settings > PS Link Device. Confirm volume, equalizer, microphone mute and reset controls. A reset option is useful if the accessory paired but no longer produces sound after the Portal restart; use it only after checking the selected output and mute state.

5. Check the Portal’s network connection

Before diagnosing poor Remote Play, inspect the Portal’s connected Wi-Fi network and connection status. Sony recommends a stable, high-speed connection and specifically recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the Portal. It also recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better play experience. This is guidance, not a guarantee of a particular latency, resolution or frame rate.

  • Confirm that the Portal is connected to the intended home network rather than a guest network with device-to-device traffic blocked.
  • Prefer 5 GHz when the Portal is close enough to the router for a reliable signal; 2.4 GHz may reach farther but can be more congested.
  • Place the Portal and router where walls and competing wireless devices cause less interference.
  • Remember that public Wi-Fi quality, login portals and network restrictions may be outside your control.

Measure the connection at the place where you play. A fast broadband plan does not guarantee a stable wireless path from the Portal to the internet or to the PS5.

6. Verify the PS5 settings Remote Play still needs

An update to the Portal does not enable Remote Play on the PS5 by itself. The PS5 must be online, signed in with the same account used on the Portal, updated, and configured for Remote Play.

  1. On the PS5, open Settings > System > Remote Play and enable Enable Remote Play.
  2. If you want to wake the PS5 from rest mode, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.
  3. Enable both Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.
  4. Prefer a wired Ethernet connection for the PS5. If the PS5 must use Wi-Fi, connect it and the Portal to the same network where possible.
  5. Start a Remote Play session and check whether the connection remains stable before changing advanced network equipment.

These are Sony’s recommended conditions. They cannot guarantee a fixed response time or image quality because congestion, distance, router behavior and the public network can still vary.

7. Check cloud-streaming and account-dependent options

Cloud-streaming information and related accessibility options are not universal Portal settings. Sony says they appear only for adult accounts in regions where PlayStation Plus Premium is available. If the menu is absent, first check the account age classification and regional service availability; do not treat a missing option as an installation failure.

8. If the update or a setting check goes wrong

The update will not install

  • Return to Settings > System > System Software > Update System Software and check again after charging the Portal and confirming a stable connection.
  • Do not switch the Portal off during installation.
  • Do not use unofficial update files, modified software or undocumented installation methods.
  • If the device reports an error, note the installed version from Device Information and contact PlayStation Support with that information.

The Portal updated but Remote Play stopped working

Check the PS5-side Remote Play and rest-mode switches before changing the Portal’s display or controller options. Confirm the same-account sign-in, PS5 internet connection and network arrangement, then test with the PS5 connected by Ethernet if possible. A Portal update cannot substitute for a disabled PS5 Remote Play setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A new option is missing

Compare the installed version with the release-note version and check your regional support page. The regional listing discrepancy between 7.3.0 and 7.0.2 shows why a feature described on one country’s page may not yet appear on your device. If the Portal reports an older version, install the offered updates in sequence rather than trying to force a later package.

9. A practical post-update checklist

Run through this list once after every system software installation:

  1. Open Quick Menu > Settings > System > System Software > Device Information and write down the installed version.
  2. Read the notes for that version and identify any new battery, audio, search or usability controls.
  3. Check Settings > System > Battery and confirm the charge limit shown on your device.
  4. Check 3D Audio, brightness, indicators, vibration and trigger-effect intensity.
  5. Review PlayStation Link volume, equalizer and microphone state if an accessory is paired.
  6. Verify Wi-Fi status, prefer 5 GHz for the Portal and aim for Sony’s recommended 15 Mbps or better connection.
  7. On the PS5, verify Remote Play, internet sign-in and both rest-mode network switches if wake-from-rest is required.
  8. Test one short Remote Play session before leaving for travel or beginning a long game.

What to remember

The reliable sequence is version first, release notes second, settings third and Remote Play testing last. The Portal’s Device Information screen resolves version uncertainty; the Battery and 3D Audio menus capture the most notable recent additions; and the PS5’s own Remote Play and rest-mode configuration remains essential. Keep the device charged, use official update methods and treat regional release pages as guidance rather than proof that every Portal has the same software.
