NYT Strands hints are deliberately partial. You earn one by finding three valid words that are not part of the day’s theme, then the game highlights the letters of an unfound theme word on the grid. The letters appear progressively, so you can recognize the target and trace it yourself instead of receiving the answer as plain text.
That distinction matters because Strands is a path-based word search, not a conventional list of clues with a visible answer bank. A hint identifies where a hidden theme word is and supplies increasingly useful visual information, while leaving the final recognition and selection to you.

How the NYT Strands hint system works
The mechanic has two stages: earning a hint and applying it to the board. Three accepted bonus words unlock the tool. Activating it then marks letters belonging to one theme word you have not yet found.
Stage 1: Find three non-theme words
Search the six-by-eight letter grid for words that fit the game’s adjacency rules but do not belong to the puzzle’s hidden collection. When the game accepts three such words, it awards a hint. The independent explainer Strands Today and a 2026 computational analysis both describe the trigger as three valid words outside the theme; the sources specify that these bonus words are at least four letters long.

These words are often called bonus words. They are not answers to the day’s theme, and they do not fill the theme-word list. Their function is to reward exploration and give you a controlled way to ask the board for help.
Stage 2: Activate the hint
When you use the earned hint, the game highlights cells that make up an unfound theme word. Strands Today describes the letters appearing one at a time rather than being printed instantly as a completed word. The 2026 paper independently describes a hint as highlighting letters of a hidden word.
The result is a location-based clue. You see which cells matter, but you still need to identify the word and draw the path through those cells. If the partial reveal is enough, you can stop looking for more help and submit the word immediately.

The gradual reveal is the point of the system. A text answer would remove both major tasks that remain after a hint: recognizing what the highlighted letters spell and tracing them in the correct order. Progressive highlighting instead narrows the search space while preserving a small solving decision.
This explanation is an inference from the documented behavior, not a quoted statement from a named NYT representative. The evidence shows a highlight that unfolds on the board, so the interface gives attention and structure without necessarily spelling the solution out in a separate answer field.
The clue is visual, not a definition
Strands does not provide a printed word bank. The theme clue is your semantic guide, while the grid supplies the letters and their possible paths. A hint therefore works by connecting those two pieces: the theme tells you what kind of word to seek, and the highlighted cells show where one candidate is located.

You remain responsible for the path
Even after the relevant cells light up, you must select them as one legal word. Recognition can be immediate for a familiar term, or it can require rearranging the revealed letters mentally and checking how the cells connect.
What counts as a word that earns a hint?
It must be accepted by the game
The three trigger words have to be valid entries under Strands’ word list. An attempted string that the game rejects does not advance the hint meter, even if it looks plausible to you.
It must be outside the theme
A theme answer is part of the puzzle’s hidden collection, so it cannot serve as a bonus word for unlocking the hint. Look for ordinary words that fit the board but are semantically unrelated to the clue.
It must meet the documented length threshold
The independent descriptions specify a minimum of four letters for these extra words. Very short fragments are therefore not a reliable way to reach the trigger.
There is no printed bonus-word list
You discover qualifying words by experimenting with adjacent letters. Because the board offers no visible inventory of accepted bonus words, keep track of words you have tried and watch for the game’s confirmation that one counted.
How letters connect on the Strands board
A hint makes more sense when you understand the board’s movement rules. The game treats each tile as adjacent to up to eight neighbors: above, below, left, right, and the four diagonals. You may turn as you go, and a word can change direction repeatedly.

- Diagonal steps count in the same way as straight steps.
- You may turn at any point in a word.
- A tile cannot be used twice within one word.
Because cells can be linked in so many directions, a highlighted cluster may look ambiguous at first. Follow the legal neighboring sequence rather than assuming the answer runs in a straight line. The no-repeat rule also explains why a tempting loop cannot be used to reuse one letter.
Read the highlight as a path
When the letters appear progressively, inspect their positions as well as their identities. A sequence that seems unclear as text may become obvious once you see its route across the grid. Conversely, several highlighted cells may still support more than one mental arrangement until you apply the theme clue.
Theme words and the spangram are different
One of the most common sources of confusion is assuming every hidden element can be requested with the same hint. The documented mechanic distinguishes ordinary theme words from the spangram.

The spangram is therefore a separate solving target, not just another theme word. If you use a hint expecting the theme-connecting entry to appear, the documented behavior says you will be disappointed: the tool points to theme words only.
Using a hint without giving away more than you want
You control how much information to extract from the mechanic. A conservative approach is to treat the hint as a location nudge and stop as soon as the pattern becomes recognizable.
- Read the theme clue again. Decide what kinds of objects, phrases or concepts might belong before searching randomly.
- Explore for bonus words. Trace legal four-or-more-letter paths that do not appear related to the theme. You need three accepted words to unlock the tool.
- Open the hint only when needed. Activating it highlights one unfound theme word rather than printing its answer.
- Watch the reveal. Let the letters appear progressively and pause as soon as you can identify a plausible word.
- Trace the highlighted route. Select the cells in order, respecting adjacency and the rule against reusing a tile.
- Return to the clue and remaining board. The hint solves one theme-word bottleneck; it does not explain the whole category or reveal the spangram.
This ladder keeps the aid proportional to the difficulty. It also prevents a common mistake: treating the first visible highlighted letter as a complete answer instead of waiting for enough context to recognize the word.

What using a hint does to your statistics
Strands Today, an independent fan site that says it is unaffiliated with NYT, reports that using a hint changes the puzzle’s “solved without hints” statistic. The same account says a hint does not end the daily streak and does not change the puzzle count.
Those are secondary-source descriptions rather than directly verified statements from the official rules page. The official game is available at https://www.nytimes.com/games/strands, but no named NYT representative statement about the statistics was directly established in the available material. Treat the streak and count behavior as the independent explainer’s account, not as a quoted official policy.
No published figure was established for how often players use hints, how much faster hints make solving, or how many answers they typically reveal. Any precise success rate or improvement claim would go beyond the documented evidence.

Expecting the theme itself to appear
The hint marks letters for one theme word. It does not explain the category or replace the theme clue. If the highlighted sequence feels unfamiliar, reconsider what the clue could encompass before assuming the tool failed.
Looking for the spangram
The spangram has a distinct role and is not the target of the ordinary hint behavior described by the independent explainer. Continue solving it separately by considering a word or phrase that could connect the two sides of the matrix and express the puzzle’s theme.

Players accustomed to ordinary crossword entries may search only in rows and columns. Strands permits all eight neighboring directions, so a highlighted answer may require one or more diagonal turns.

Reusing a cell
A visually convenient route can tempt you to pass through the same tile twice. That is illegal within one word; find a path that uses each selected cell once.
Assuming every accepted word is thematic
Bonus words are intentionally valid but outside the theme. Their acceptance is progress toward a hint, not evidence that you have found another answer in the hidden collection.
Waiting for a typed answer
The system is designed around the grid. A reveal may identify cells without presenting a separate text solution, so switch from reading to tracing when the pattern becomes clear.

A practical troubleshooting checklist
- No hint appeared: confirm that three words were accepted and that each was at least four letters long.
- The meter did not advance: the word may have been rejected or may belong to the theme rather than the bonus pool.
- The highlight is confusing: use the clue to interpret the partial letters, then inspect diagonal and turning routes.
- The selected path fails: check for a non-adjacent jump or an attempt to reuse a tile.
- You expected the spangram: remember that the documented hint targets theme words, not the theme-connecting entry.
These checks address the rules that are documented for the mechanic. They cannot guarantee a particular interface label or animation, which may change as the game is updated.
