No confirmed evidence shows that PlayStation 3 system software 4.93 soft-locks disc drives. Sony’s published notes say the update improves system performance and renews the Blu-ray player encryption key; they do not identify a disc-drive lock or list it as a known issue. A troubleshooting post describes an individual update problem, but it does not establish that 4.93 caused a widespread hardware defect.
What Sony says about PS3 update 4.93
Sony lists version 4.93 as the current PS3 system software on its system software support page. Its published change note is: “This system software update improves system performance.” Sony also says current PS3 software renews the Blu-ray player encryption key needed to play Blu-ray discs.
Those notes describe software maintenance and Blu-ray playback protection. They do not say that 4.93 disables, locks, or physically damages the console’s disc drive, nor do they disclose a new drive-related code change. The support page lists versions 4.90 through 4.93 with the same performance-improvement note.
Why the soft-lock claim is unverified
A community troubleshooting thread includes a user reporting difficulty updating to 4.93. Replies suggest checking drive connections and discuss a possible replacement drive. These are individual repair suggestions—not a Sony service bulletin, a controlled test, proof of causation, or a count of affected consoles.

No published failure-rate or model-distribution figures, and no official statement confirming a 4.93 drive lock, are established by these sources. Treat the connection as an unverified report rather than a confirmed update defect. A console that cannot finish an installation and one that installs successfully but cannot read discs have different symptoms and should not automatically be given the same diagnosis.
What to do if your PS3 will not update or read discs
If the update has not started
For an ordinary, unmodified console, use Sony’s documented update methods. Sony says an update requires 200 MB of free space on the PS3 hard drive or removable storage. The console can download the latest update over the internet, or you can install it from a FAT32 USB drive.

- Create the folders
PS3/UPDATEon the drive. - Download the official update data from Sony and save the file as
PS3UPDAT.PUPinside theUPDATEfolder. - Connect the drive to the PS3 and select Settings > System Update > Update via Storage Media.
Sony warns: “Do not perform updates using any data other than the official update data provided by Sony Interactive Entertainment over a network or on disc media, and do not perform updates by methods other than those described in the product documentation or in this site.” See Sony’s instructions for the current download and details.
If installation is stuck or looping
Do not treat an installation problem as proof that the disc drive has failed. Sony’s PS3 manual warns that cancelling an installation before it finishes can damage system software and may require service or exchange. If the console is caught in a loop, consult official support or a qualified repair technician rather than trying unverified update files.

If the console installs software but will not read discs
First note exactly what fails: whether the PS3 recognizes any disc, whether only Blu-ray movies fail to play, or whether the drive makes an unusual mechanical sound. These symptoms do not by themselves prove an update-related soft lock. The community thread’s suggestions to check drive connections or consider replacement are anecdotal; have the console’s exact model and drive configuration diagnosed before buying parts. A replacement drive should be considered only if a hardware fault is confirmed, not as a presumed fix for a firmware bug.

Sony’s note that PS3 software renews the Blu-ray player encryption key concerns the ability to play protected Blu-ray discs. It is distinct from evidence that the update locks the physical drive. Sony’s support page does not explain the underlying key-renewal process or establish that every new movie requires an update, so it cannot support a more specific claim about how or when playback protection changes.
