A red light on a PS4 DualShock 4 controller can be normal: the console uses red to identify the second controller, and some games change the light bar for gameplay feedback. If the controller also will not respond, pair, or charge, work through the reset and USB checks below.
Why is my PS4 controller light red?
Red by itself does not prove the controller is broken or low on battery. Sony’s DUALSHOCK 4 manual and support guidance says the first connected controller is blue and subsequent controllers glow red, green, and pink. Games may also use the light bar to provide gameplay feedback.

Look at what the controller does, not just its color. If it accepts input and works normally, the red light may simply identify player two or reflect a game effect. If it is red and does not respond, will not pair, or will not charge, troubleshoot it.
What to check before resetting
- Input: Does the controller operate the PS4, or is there no response?
- Charging: Does the controller charge when connected by USB?
- Pairing: Does pressing the PS button establish a connection over USB?
- Other devices: Was the controller recently connected to a phone, computer, or another console?
- Reset behavior: Does the light or connection change after a hardware reset?
These checks help distinguish an ordinary red light from a connection or charging problem without assuming that a particular component has failed.

How to reset and reconnect a DualShock 4
Sony says resetting is often the first troubleshooting step for controller problems. Follow this sequence:
- Turn off and unplug the PS4.
- Disconnect the controller from its USB cable.
- Locate the small reset hole on the back of the controller.
- Use an unfolded paper clip or similar small object to press and hold the reset button for at least five seconds.
- Reconnect the controller directly to a PS4 USB port using a known-good, data-capable USB cable.
- Press the PS button to pair it with the console.
A cable that can charge a device may not carry the data needed for pairing. If the controller does not connect, try another USB cable and another PS4 port rather than assuming the first cable supports data.

If the controller is red and will not connect
A DualShock 4 can pair with only one device at a time. If you used it with a phone, computer, or another console, turn off Bluetooth on that device, reset the controller using the steps above, and connect it to the PS4 by USB before pressing the PS button.

If the controller charges but does not pair, the cable may be charge-only or the connection process may not have completed; charging alone does not confirm that USB pairing data is working.

If the controller is red and will not charge
Try a known-good USB cable connected directly to the PS4, then test another console USB port. When the controller connects, check its battery icon in the PS quick menu. Sony says a controller with no remaining charge takes about two hours to charge.
A red light alone is not evidence of a low battery. Use whether the battery icon changes and whether the controller works after charging to assess the charging issue.

When to contact PlayStation Repairs
If a direct PS4 connection, a known-good data-capable cable, and the five-second reset do not restore pairing or charging, follow Sony’s direction to PlayStation Repairs. Sony’s reviewed guidance does not give a red-light-specific failure rate or identify one universal failed component, so a red light by itself is not enough to conclude that the battery or motherboard is defective.
