PS4 error WS-44949-0 means PlayStation has temporarily restricted the action you tried to take. Sony’s recommended steps are to sign in to Account Management in a web browser, check that you’re using the correct account email and password, then wait 24 hours before trying the PS4 again if the error continues. If access is still blocked, contact PlayStation Support.
What WS-44949-0 means
Sony describes WS-44949-0 as “This action has been temporarily restricted.” The message identifies a temporary restriction on an action, but Sony does not publish one universal trigger for the code. It does not, by itself, prove that your PS4 is defective, that PSN is down, or that your account or console has been permanently banned. Sony’s WS-44949-0 support page gives the meaning and recovery steps but not a detailed explanation of why each restriction occurs.
Other problems can look similar. An incorrect sign-in ID or password is a credential issue; a network or DNS error is a connectivity issue; a service outage affects access more broadly. Sony lists network-related codes separately in its error-code directory. Don’t infer any of those causes from WS-44949-0 alone.
Work through the official recovery steps
- Stop retrying on the PS4 for now. Repeated attempts won’t clarify whether the issue is credentials or a restriction. Make a note of when the error began and avoid restarting the waiting period with more failed attempts.
- Try Account Management in a browser. On a phone or computer, open Sony’s WS-44949-0 help page and follow its Account Management link. Enter the PSN sign-in ID—the email address associated with the account—and the current password.
- If browser sign-in fails, address account access first. Check that you have the right email address and password. If you don’t know the password, it was recently changed, or you cannot access the account, use PlayStation’s account-recovery or password-reset option rather than continuing to try on the console. A reset can resolve a credential problem, but it is not a guaranteed way to remove a temporary restriction.
- If the error continues, wait a full 24 hours before trying the PS4 again. Sony specifies a 24-hour wait. To make the interval clear, count from your latest failed sign-in attempt where possible. Sony does not guarantee that every restriction clears exactly at the 24-hour mark.
- Try signing in on the PS4 after the wait. If WS-44949-0 remains, stop troubleshooting and contact PlayStation Support.
Use browser sign-in to narrow down the problem

Check the email address and password, especially if you recently changed credentials or use more than one PlayStation account. If the details are correct but browser access still fails, account recovery or a wider PlayStation service issue may be involved. WS-44949-0 alone is not proof of a permanent suspension.

Account Management works, but the PS4 does not
A successful browser sign-in confirms that the credentials work there; it does not establish why the console is being blocked. The console may still be affected by the temporary restriction, or the issue may be specific to its authentication state or network. Sony’s code-specific guidance still prioritizes the 24-hour wait—not resetting the console.
Several accounts fail on one PS4
This makes a console-, network- or service-side issue more plausible, but it does not identify the cause. Check PlayStation Network service status and run the PS4’s internet connection test before changing network settings.

The same account works on another PlayStation
This is evidence that the account can sign in elsewhere, not proof that the affected PS4 is banned. Follow the wait-and-retry instructions for the affected console; if the restriction remains, contact Support with the comparison information.
When network troubleshooting makes sense
Restarting the router, testing the PS4’s internet connection or trying Ethernet can be reasonable if other devices also have trouble reaching PSN or the console reports a separate network error. These are general connectivity checks, not confirmed WS-44949-0 fixes.

Changing DNS is not Sony’s remedy for this code. Sony classifies DNS-related errors separately in its error-code directory. Consider DNS troubleshooting only if you have a separate DNS or network-resolution error; a public DNS provider cannot remove an account restriction.
What not to do
- Don’t assume you are banned. Sony’s wording says “temporarily restricted,” not permanently suspended or console-banned.
- Don’t keep attempting sign-in. Verify the account in a browser, then observe the 24-hour wait.
- Don’t treat 2-step verification as a required fix. Some third-party guides recommend changing security settings, but Sony’s WS-44949-0 instructions do not identify that as a remedy.
- Don’t rebuild the database or initialize the PS4 for this code. Sony does not prescribe either step for WS-44949-0, and initialization can erase local data.
- Don’t pay anyone promising to remove the restriction. Use PlayStation Account Management and official Support rather than unofficial “unban” or account-recovery services.
When to contact PlayStation Support
Contact PlayStation Support if you still cannot sign in on the PS4 after checking Account Management and waiting 24 hours. Sony directs users to Support when the restriction continues.

To help explain the case, have the error code, the account’s sign-in email, the approximate time the error began, and the result of your browser sign-in ready. You can also note your PS4 model if available, whether other accounts fail on the same console, and whether the account works on another PlayStation.
