PlayStation now requires age verification for adult accounts registered in the UK and Ireland to use certain communication and broadcasting features. The June 2026 deadline reported earlier this year has passed; unverified players can still play games and use the PlayStation Store, but some social features may be unavailable until they verify.
Who needs to verify their age?
PlayStation’s age-verification FAQ, updated 1 June 2026, says the requirement applies to adult accounts registered in the UK or Ireland. It is an account requirement, not a restriction on every PS5 worldwide. Sony says an account’s country or region is selected when it is created and cannot later be changed in the account settings; see its PlayStation Network Terms of Service.
New adult accounts may be asked to verify during account creation. Existing adult accounts may see a prompt when trying to use a covered feature. PlayStation says verification is required once per account.
What happens if you do not verify?
You can continue playing games and accessing or buying from the PlayStation Store without completing verification, according to PlayStation. The features that may be restricted are those involving communication or broadcasting.

Individual games can also set restrictions for their own chat, messaging or user-generated-content features. Which features are affected can vary by game and may change as a game is updated.
How to verify your age on PS5
Start from the age-verification prompt on your account, or scan the QR code on PlayStation’s official help page. The verification service is provided by Yoti. The flow presents the methods available to your account:

Choose the option you can complete and are comfortable using. The phone route depends on a qualifying contract and matching records; facial estimation requires a suitable camera and an image you are comfortable submitting; the ID route requires an accepted document. The account’s verification flow determines which methods are available.
What happens to the information you provide?
PlayStation says Yoti processes the information submitted for verification. For facial age estimation, Yoti uses facial geometry to estimate age and deletes that geometry data when verification is complete. PlayStation says it receives only the verification result and does not collect, store or otherwise process that geometry data. The FAQ links to Yoti’s privacy notice for information about other personal data handled in the process.

What if the account holder is under 18?
PlayStation says people under 18 need an account managed by a parent or guardian. If an adult account was created for someone under 18, PlayStation says it should be updated to the appropriate account type, with a parent or guardian managing the process.

A T3 report dated 21 April 2026 described June as an upcoming deadline for UK and Ireland users. That date has passed. PlayStation’s current FAQ now describes age verification as required for adult accounts in those regions to access covered features, rather than as a future deadline.
