Sony plans to add a dedicated anime hub to the PS5 home experience in spring 2027. The announced space is meant to bring anime, anime-inspired games and easier access to the Crunchyroll app together; it is not a new streaming service. Sony has not yet confirmed an exact launch date, supported countries or membership requirements.
What Sony announced for PS5
PlayStation leader Hideaki Nishino announced the planned hub at the inaugural Crunchyroll Anime Future Forum, according to Gematsu’s October 7, 2026 report and Push Square’s October 2026 coverage. The initial description is a dedicated space within the PS5 home experience featuring anime, anime-inspired games and a shortcut to the full Crunchyroll app.
That points to a discovery and access feature, not confirmation that the hub itself will stream episodes, unlock paid content or change Crunchyroll membership terms. The announcement also does not say that the hub will be mandatory or occupy a particular home-screen position. Interface images and detailed controls have not been announced in the cited coverage.
When is the PS5 anime hub coming?
The stated target is spring 2027. No exact day has been announced, so spring 2027 should be treated as a planned launch window, not a firm release date.

Will the hub require Crunchyroll Premium or PS Plus?
The announcement coverage does not establish whether a paid Crunchyroll subscription or PlayStation Plus membership will be required for any part of the hub. It describes easier access to the Crunchyroll app, but does not specify which app content or features will be available without a subscription. Sony has also not confirmed the hub’s launch regions.
How the hub differs from LIVE TV on PS5
PS5 already has a separate anime option: LIVE TV, a free, ad-supported channel and on-demand destination in the console’s Media section. It is distinct from the planned home-experience hub.

Sony’s PlayStation Blog launch post describes more than 100 channels and on-demand programming in the U.S. Anime examples include Naruto, Sailor Moon, Hunter x Hunter and Death Note, as well as Crunchyroll channels for Black Clover and box sets. Sony Pictures Entertainment’s August 31, 2026 announcement also identifies two Crunchyroll anime channels for LIVE TV. Those details concern LIVE TV, not the future hub.
Crunchyroll is already on PlayStation
The planned feature is an easier route to an app already available on PS5, rather than Crunchyroll’s debut on the console. The announcement coverage describes the hub as providing access to the full app. It does not indicate that existing PS5 owners need new hardware for the feature.

Why Sony is connecting anime and PlayStation
The hub fits Sony’s wider investment in anime and fan engagement. In its May 8, 2026 corporate strategy announcement, Sony Group said Crunchyroll had more than 21 million paid subscribers globally as of the end of March 2026. That figure is a paid-subscriber count, not a count of all registered users.
Sony described its anime work as spanning production, fan engagement, marketing and global distribution. The PS5 hub is one planned point of connection between that anime audience and PlayStation; Sony has not published an estimate of its audience, uptake or financial impact. Crunchyroll president Rahul Purini described the partnership this way: “From Crunchyroll membership on PlayStation, to the upcoming Ghost of Tsushima: Legends anime series, today we take that partnership with Sony Interactive Entertainment one step further with an anime hub on PlayStation. Serving fans means meeting them where they already are.” The quote was reproduced in contemporary reporting of the announcement.
