Gizchina’s January 14, 2022 article, “PS5: retrocompatibility with older consoles may be coming soon,” treated a patent described as “Use of Spoof Clock and Fine Grain Frequency Control” as a possible sign that older PlayStation games could work on PS5. That was an interpretation of a patent, not a reported Sony product announcement. The article’s “may be coming soon” wording reflected speculation at the time; it should not be read as a current forecast or confirmation of a feature. Read the original Gizchina report.
The patent’s attribution and interpretation do not establish that Sony planned to add general PS1, PS2, or PS3 compatibility. Sony has not confirmed such a feature in the current compatibility information cited below.

Sony’s “over 4,000” figure refers to PS4 titles ready to play on PS5, not the number of older-generation games or discs supported. Sony’s PS5 product page describes both PS4 compatibility and a selection of classic games, while PlayStation Support’s compatibility page explains limitations.

Can PS5 play PS3 discs?
No. PlayStation Support states: “PS5 consoles do not support PlayStation®3 discs.” A PS3 disc is not made compatible by inserting it into a PS5, and the PS4 compatibility figure does not change that limitation.
If you want to play a PS3 disc, a PS3 console is the practical physical option. Check the console model, condition, required accessories, and whether it plays the specific games you want before buying; this is an alternative for PS3 discs, not a way to add disc compatibility to a PS5.

Can PS5 play PS1 or PS2 games?
Not as a blanket promise of compatibility with original discs. Sony lists selected original PlayStation and PS2 classics through PlayStation Plus, but that is catalog access to particular games—not confirmation that every title is available or that PS1 and PS2 discs work on PS5.
Before subscribing or relying on a specific game, look it up in the PlayStation Plus catalog for your region and check the game’s own listing for access conditions and play method. Availability can vary by title and local catalog; the general catalog description does not establish universal access or local playback for every classic.
