Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA flashing blue light on a DualSense usually means the controller is trying to pair or reconnect—not that it is automatically broken. If it keeps flashing, turns off, or never reaches the normal connected/player-indicator state, follow the fixes below in order. Start with a direct USB data connection because it quickly separates pairing trouble from a cable, console, or controller fault.
What does a flashing blue DualSense light mean?
The DualSense light bar normally flashes while the controller is attempting to pair. When pairing succeeds, it should stop searching and enter its connected/player-indicator state. There is no single official Sony error code that explains every blue-light pattern.

- Flashes briefly, then connects: usually normal pairing behavior.
- Flashes continuously: the pairing or connection attempt has not completed.
- Flashes, then turns off: check the charge, cable, reset procedure, and possible hardware faults.
- Flashes after PC, phone, tablet, Mac, or another PS5 use: it may still be seeking another device or need to be paired again.
- Blue flashing with orange or amber charging behavior: charging and pairing are separate indicators; do not treat every light color as the same fault.
Work through these six fixes rather than trying unrelated button combinations. The sequence eliminates temporary console states, establishes a reliable wired connection, resets the controller’s local state, restores pairing, checks software, and finally isolates the failed component.
1. Restart the PS5 and reconnect the controller by USB
- Turn off the PS5 through its normal power menu.
- Connect the DualSense directly to the console with a known-good USB-C data-and-charging cable.
- Turn the PS5 back on.
- Press the controller’s PS button once.
If the console is unresponsive, hold the console’s power button until it shuts down. Use that as a fallback rather than routinely unplugging the PS5, particularly while it may be writing data or installing an update.

Expected result: The controller should stop endlessly searching and become assigned to a player. If it does not, test another cable and USB port before concluding that the controller is defective. Sony’s pairing guidance is available on the DualSense support page.
2. Test a proper USB data cable and another PS5 port
A USB-C cable can provide power without carrying USB data. A phone cable that charges successfully may therefore be unsuitable for pairing or updating the controller.
- Use the cable supplied with the PS5 or controller where available.
- Otherwise, use a known-good cable explicitly capable of data transfer and charging.
- Connect directly to the PS5, not through a hub, dock, or adapter.
- Try another PS5 USB port, including a rear port where available.
- Check the controller’s USB-C socket for visible debris, looseness, or damage.
Do not buy another cable merely because the current one is not Sony-branded. The useful test is a confirmed data connection. Sony recommends the included or official cable for pairing and notes that not every USB charger can charge a DualSense; see its controller support guidance.

- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
- Turn off the PS5.
- Disconnect the controller from the USB cable.
- Find the small reset hole on the back, near the Sony logo.
- Use a pin or similar tool to press the reset button for at least five seconds.
- Connect the controller to the PS5 with the official or included USB cable.
- Press the PS button.
Sony states that this reset does not reconfigure the controller or affect pairing, profiles, or other controller settings. It is an official troubleshooting step, but it is not guaranteed to fix a hardware failure. Follow the official DualSense reset procedure rather than relying on unofficial long button-hold combinations.
4. Pair the controller manually again
Pairing an additional controller with a PS5
- Use a controller that is already connected to open Settings > Accessories > General > Bluetooth Accessories.
- On the flashing controller, press and hold Create and PS simultaneously.
- Release the buttons when the light bar begins flashing.
- Select DualSense Wireless Controller when it appears in the list.
For this wireless pairing route, disconnect the USB cable from the additional controller first, as Sony instructs.
Pairing with a PC, Mac, phone, or tablet
- Make sure the controller is off.
- Press and hold Create + PS until the light bar flashes.
- Open the target device’s Bluetooth settings.
- Select DualSense Wireless Controller.
A controller recently used with another device may still be attempting to reconnect there. Turning Bluetooth off temporarily on nearby devices can make the intended pairing target clearer. Compatibility and available features vary across PC, Mac, and mobile platforms.
5. Update the PS5 and DualSense software
Software problems can affect connection and pairing, although Sony does not claim that every flashing-light issue is firmware-related.

6. Determine whether the controller or PS5 is at fault
Cross-testing is more informative than immediately buying a replacement. Try these three checks:
- Test the affected controller on another supported device over USB or Bluetooth.
- Test another DualSense on the same PS5.
- If necessary, try the controller in PS5 Safe Mode using USB.
| Test result | More likely explanation |
|---|---|
| This controller fails on multiple supported devices after reset and cable testing | Controller hardware, battery, USB-C port, or firmware problem |
| This controller works elsewhere but not on this PS5 | PS5 USB, Bluetooth, or system-software problem |
| Another controller works on the same PS5 | The original controller is the likely problem |
| Several controllers fail on the same PS5 | Console-side software, USB, Bluetooth, or hardware issue |
| The controller works in Safe Mode but not in the normal interface | Possible normal-mode system or software problem |
These results are useful clues, not absolute proof. A controller can work on one platform and fail on another because Bluetooth behavior, firmware, and feature support differ.
Use Safe Mode carefully
Safe Mode is an escalation step when the PS5 will not recognize any controller normally or when you need to investigate a possible system-software problem. Start with non-destructive options and back up important data where appropriate.

Do not casually choose Restore Default Settings, Reset PS5, or system-software reinstallation. Those options can have significant consequences and are not routine fixes for a flashing light. Safe Mode may help isolate a console problem, but it does not guarantee a repair.

Low battery
A low battery can make pairing unreliable or cause the controller to shut down, but blue flashing alone does not prove the battery is empty. Charge it with a known-good cable and retry the wired pairing procedure.
Wireless interference
Interference is a plausible edge case, not Sony’s standard diagnosis for a flashing blue light. Test with the controller close to the PS5, temporarily disconnect nearby Bluetooth devices, and avoid pairing while another device is actively searching for the controller. Third-party troubleshooting discusses interference as a possibility, but it should not replace the USB and cross-testing steps.
Physical damage
Liquid or impact damage, a loose USB-C port, or a swollen battery warrants service. If the battery appears swollen, stop charging or using the controller and seek qualified assistance.
When should you repair or replace the controller?
Use PlayStation Repairs when the controller still fails after the reset, known-good cable and port tests, manual pairing, and software updates. Repair is especially sensible if the controller is under warranty or has a physical fault.

Consider replacement only after cross-testing confirms that the controller—not the PS5—is the failed component. A new DualSense is available through PlayStation Direct. Sony also offers certified-refurbished controllers with a stated 12-month manufacturer’s warranty; cosmetic condition, availability, region, and prices can change. A charging station is a convenience accessory, not a solution for a controller that cannot pair.
Bottom line
A flashing blue DualSense usually indicates an incomplete connection attempt. Restart the PS5, establish a wired connection with a data-capable cable, reset and re-pair the controller, update both devices, and cross-test before spending money. If one controller fails everywhere or shows physical damage, seek repair; if several controllers fail on the same PS5, investigate the console instead.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does flashing blue mean the PS5 controller is broken?
No. It usually means the DualSense is attempting to pair or reconnect. It becomes more likely to be a controller fault only after it fails reset, cable, pairing, update, and cross-device tests.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Can any USB-C cable pair a DualSense?
No. A cable may charge without carrying USB data. Use the included cable or a confirmed data-and-charging USB-C cable connected directly to the PS5.
Will resetting the controller erase my settings?
Sony says the rear-pinhole reset does not reconfigure the controller or affect pairing, profiles, or other controller settings.
Why do two PS5 controllers flash blue?
When multiple controllers fail on the same PS5, the console’s software, USB, Bluetooth, or hardware is more suspect than both controllers failing independently. Test each with a known-good data cable and consider Safe Mode or PlayStation Repairs.
How do I pair a DualSense after using it on a PC?
Turn it off, hold Create and PS until the light flashes, then select DualSense Wireless Controller in the PS5 Bluetooth Accessories menu or the other device’s Bluetooth settings.
