For more comfortable PS5 sessions, adjust vibration and trigger-effect intensity to suit your hands, and lower the controller speaker volume or indicator brightness if you prefer less sound or light. Open Settings > Accessories > Controller (General). These settings let you tailor how the DualSense feels, but Sony’s cited guidance does not quantify how much any one change extends battery life, so treat battery savings as unproven rather than expecting a specific number of extra hours.
Which PS5 controller settings should you change?
On the PS5, open Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) to find the general controller options. Sony’s guide to general controller settings lists the following controls:
| Setting | What to change it for | Battery evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Vibration intensity | Lower or turn it off if vibration feels distracting or uncomfortable. | Sony’s cited sources do not quantify a runtime change. |
| Trigger-effect intensity | Reduce or turn it off if adaptive resistance is uncomfortable or you prefer a lighter trigger feel. Effects apply in supported games. | No setting-specific runtime gain is established. |
| Controller indicator brightness | Reduce the indicator brightness if you prefer less light. | No specific battery saving is quantified; this control concerns the indicators. |
| Controller speaker volume | Lower it if you do not need sound from the controller speaker. | No sourced runtime figure is tied to this setting. |
| Communication method | If the wireless signal is weak, connect the included USB cable and select Use USB Cable. | This is a connection choice, not a documented battery-life setting. |
Changing these options is a preference trade-off: less vibration or trigger resistance may make play more comfortable, but it also reduces those effects in games that support them. Sony’s DualSense connection guide notes that selecting Use Bluetooth keeps the controller on Bluetooth even while it is connected to the console by USB.
What can you reasonably expect for battery life?
There is no sourced setting-by-setting battery-runtime estimate in Sony’s cited material. Lower vibration, trigger effects, speaker volume, or indicator brightness may seem like plausible ways to reduce activity or output, but the available official evidence does not establish how much—or whether—each change extends playtime per charge. Use those controls for comfort, feature, sound, or light preferences, not as a guaranteed battery fix.

Sony’s DualSense instruction manual says battery life varies with storage method, conditions of use, and environmental factors. The controller’s actual runtime can therefore differ between users and situations; the manual does not provide a measured runtime gain for the settings above. See the DualSense Wireless Controller instruction manual.
How to check the charge and charge in Rest Mode
- Press the PS button to open the Control Center.
- Select Accessories to view the controller’s battery level. A battery icon with a lightning bolt indicates charging; when fully charged, the icon stops animating and shows three bars.
- To charge through the console, connect the controller by USB. Sony says USB charging works while the PS5 is on or in Rest Mode.
To enable USB power in Rest Mode, go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode > Supply Power to USB Ports. Sony’s charging guidance says Adaptive is available only on PS5 consoles in the CFI-2000 model group; Sony describes it as optimizing charging time according to remaining battery and potentially using less power than 3 Hours or Always. This concerns console power and charging behavior, not longer controller playtime per charge.

- Haptic feedback - Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions with dual actuators which replace traditional rumble motors. In your hands, these dynamic vibrations can simulate the feeling of everything from environments to the recoil of different weapons. .Operating temperature : 41 °F to 95 °F (5 °C to 35 °C)
- Adaptive triggers - Experience varying levels of force and tension as you interact with your in-game gear and environments. From pulling back an increasingly tight bowstring to hitting the brakes on a speeding car, feel physically connected to your on-screen actions.
- Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
- DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
When to reduce or disable vibration and trigger effects
Comfort is a valid reason to change these settings even when the battery effect is unknown. Try reducing vibration or trigger-effect intensity first if you still want some feedback; turn either off if it remains unpleasant. The trigger effect is used only by supported games, so the feel can differ by title.
Sony’s controller manual advises: “Do not use the vibration or trigger effect features if you have any ailment or injury to the bones, joints, or muscles of your hands or arms.” It also says to stop immediately if fatigue, discomfort, or pain begins, consult a doctor if the condition persists, and take a break at about 30-minute intervals. This is manufacturer guidance, not personalized medical advice.

Update the controller when troubleshooting
Controller device software can be updated from Settings > Accessories > Controller (General). Keeping the console and controller software current is sensible troubleshooting hygiene if you are investigating controller behavior, but Sony’s cited material does not promise that an update improves battery life.
Sony’s power-saving guidance says the controller turns off when the PS5 is turned off or placed in Rest Mode. The cited material does not establish a specific controller auto-off menu path or timing interval, so there is no interval to set based on this guidance. See Sony’s power-saving settings guide.
