If your PS5 will not read a disc, first confirm that your console has a compatible drive and that the disc is a supported type. Then check orientation and condition, and test another supported disc. These checks can rule out common compatibility problems before you change software settings or seek repair.
Start by identifying your PS5 model and disc drive
“Is my PS5 Digital Edition compatible with a disc drive?” The answer depends on the model group—not just whether the console is called a Digital Edition. Sony identifies its separately sold PlayStation 5 CFI-ZDD1 disc drive as compatible with PS5 CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 model groups. The original CFI-1000 PS5 Digital Edition does not support disc-based games or media, and Sony does not list it as compatible with that add-on drive. If you have an eligible model and are installing the CFI-ZDD1, the console must be off, unplugged, and cool. Sony’s setup instructions show the drive clipping into place beneath the appropriate cover; internet access is required to pair it with the console during setup. Follow the model-specific cover and fitting instructions rather than forcing the drive. See Sony’s drive setup procedure.

Check whether the disc format is supported
A disc fitting into the slot does not mean the PS5 can play it. Sony lists Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD playback, with the supported formats and exclusions below. The format guidance is about disc playback; it does not mean every recordable disc or every type of content will work.

The two Sony pages phrase recordable-disc support differently: the media guide lists BD-R/RE and DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW variants, while the troubleshooting page says burned discs cannot be played. So do not infer that a home-burned disc will work simply because its disc type appears in the format list. Sony also warns that a supported format can still fail because of scratches, dirt, recording quality, or the characteristics of the device used to record it. - Do not insert: 8 cm discs, non-circular discs, cracked or deformed discs, repaired discs, or discs with stickers or paper labels.
- May fail despite being the right general type: scratched or dirty discs, or discs whose recording quality or recording device causes compatibility problems.
Check disc orientation and condition
“Which way does the disc go in a vertical PS5?” With the console standing vertically on its stand, insert the disc with the label side facing left. If you are unsure whether it went in correctly, eject it and reinsert it in that orientation. Sony recommends reinserting the disc after each troubleshooting step, which helps you see whether a single change made a difference. Sony’s disc troubleshooting steps include the orientation check.
Look at the readable surface for fingerprints, smudges, dirt, or scratches. Hold the disc by its edges where possible and avoid touching the surface. If it needs cleaning, Sony recommends a lint-free cloth made for Blu-ray Discs or DVDs. Wipe from the center outward toward the edge, not around in a circle. Cleaning can remove dirt or fingerprints; it is not a repair for scratches. Avoid improvised fixes, and do not insert a disc that is cracked, warped, or otherwise deformed. Run low-risk checks in order
Use this sequence for a general “Why won’t my PS5 read a disc?” problem. After each change, reinsert the disc and check whether the console recognizes it.
- Confirm there is a compatible drive. Check the console model group and whether a drive is built in or an eligible CFI-ZDD1 has been installed. If the console is an original CFI-1000 Digital Edition, disc troubleshooting cannot make it support disc media.
- Confirm the disc is an eligible type. Rule out CDs, burned discs, unsupported Blu-ray variants, and unfinalized DVDs. Check that it is not cracked, deformed, repaired, or covered by a label.
- Reinsert it in the correct orientation. For a vertical console on its stand, the label faces left as the disc enters the slot.
- Inspect and clean the disc if needed. Use a lint-free Blu-ray/DVD cloth, wiping from the center to the edge. Eject and reinsert it after cleaning.
- Try another supported disc. Use a supported game, Blu-ray, or DVD that is in good condition. Reinsert it in the same correct orientation.

Use the error code to choose the right troubleshooting path
CE-110538-8: Blu-ray read failure
Sony describes CE-110538-8 as a failed Blu-ray read. Its guidance is to inspect the disc for fingerprints, smudges, and scratches; confirm it is inserted correctly; and test another disc. If the problem persists after these checks, Sony directs users to PlayStation support or Repairs. The error is useful context, but it does not by itself identify whether the disc or the console is at fault. Follow the code-specific instructions at Sony’s CE-110538-8 support page.

SU-101312-8 describes a different problem: the console cannot detect a Blu-ray drive. Do not apply its network and update steps indiscriminately to every disc that fails to read. For this error, Sony’s listed sequence includes powering off and unplugging the console, waiting five minutes before restarting the router, restarting the console, deleting and retrying the update file, and considering a console reset if the issue remains. The reset erases stored data. Use the instructions on Sony’s SU-101312-8 support page for the exact procedure and error-specific context.

Try Safe Mode software options only after the basic checks
If compatible discs continue to fail after checking model, format, orientation, and condition, Sony lists two Safe Mode options for disc issues: Clear Cache and Rebuild Database. Treat these as later console-level troubleshooting, not as a way to make an unsupported disc playable or fix physical damage. Sony places Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) after Rebuild Database if the problem remains. Follow the sequence in Sony’s disc issue troubleshooting page.
A full reset is not a routine first step: Sony warns that Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) deletes all information on the console. Before proceeding, review Sony’s backup and reinstallation instructions and make any backup you need. Confirm that you understand the data-loss consequence before selecting the reset option. If the console cannot detect its drive and displays SU-101312-8, use that error’s instructions rather than assuming the general disc-read sequence is the right fix.
When to stop troubleshooting and request repair
After confirming compatibility and testing more than one supported disc, persistent failures warrant help from PlayStation support or Repairs. The same applies when a drive-detection error continues after the steps Sony gives for that specific code. When contacting support, have the console model number, whether the drive is built in or an add-on, the disc types tested, whether one or several discs fail, and any displayed error code available. This information separates a model mismatch or media limitation from a recurring console-level symptom without treating a home comparison as a definitive hardware test.
