Sony’s PS5 Safety Guide explicitly says that PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 3 software “cannot be played from a disc.” A PS5 with a built-in drive, or a Digital Edition fitted with Sony’s supported add-on drive, does not change that limitation. If your priority is using the discs you already own, buy or keep original PlayStation 2 hardware instead.
The direct buying answer
A PS5 is not a PS2-disc emulator. Its disc hardware does not read and run original PS2 game software, regardless of whether you choose a standard PS5 with a drive or a compatible Digital Edition plus the separately sold drive accessory.

This is different from downloading a separately released version of a game, playing a PS4 title through PS5 backward compatibility, or using a modern remaster. Those options may provide access to a particular game, but they do not make the original PS2 disc playable. If the requirement is “insert my PS2 disc and play,” a PS2 console is the straightforward hardware match.

People use the phrase “PS2 emulation” to describe software that reproduces the behavior of PlayStation 2 hardware. In the context of this purchase, however, the important question is physical media: can the console accept an original PS2 game disc, identify its software, and execute it?

- The Playstation 2 system lets you play original PS1 games as well as the huge selection of PS2 games
- Includes: Playstation 2 System, 1 Dual Shock 2 Controller, AC Cable, AV Cable
- Color: Black
- PlayStation2 is equipped with a 128-bit Emotion Engine processor that enables lightning-fast gameplay and impressive graphics power
On PS5, the answer is no. The optical drive is designed for the disc formats Sony documents as supported, not for every PlayStation-era game disc. A drive that can read a supported PS5 or PS4 game disc is not automatically a general-purpose reader for older console software.
Original disc versus a separately available release
- Original PS2 disc: Not playable on PS5.
- Digital version: May be available for an individual game or collection, but availability is title- and storefront-dependent. It is a separate release, not disc emulation.
- Remaster or remake: Runs as the modern edition supplied by its publisher. It may change graphics, controls, features, or content.
- PS4 game: Many PS4 games run on PS5 through Sony’s backward-compatibility support. That statement does not include original PS2 discs.
What Sony’s documentation actually says
The decisive wording appears in Sony’s PS5 Safety Guide: “PlayStation® format software, PlayStation®2 format software, and PlayStation®3 format software cannot be played from a disc.” This is a direct compatibility limitation, not a warning about a particular game or a temporary software issue.
The same documentation lists supported PS5 and compatible PS4 game-disc formats alongside supported video-disc types. PlayStation 2 game software is not listed as playable. Consequently, buying the model with an optical drive does not create a path to PS2 discs.

Sony’s published figure of more than 4,000 PS4 games ready to play on PS4 and PS5 describes the current PS4 ecosystem. Earlier Sony FAQ language said more than 99% of 4,000-plus PS4 games could be played on PS5 or PS5 Digital Edition. Both figures concern PS4 games; neither is evidence that PS2 software runs from its original disc.

Why a PS5 disc drive does not solve the problem
The physical presence of a drive answers only one question: whether the console has an optical mechanism. Software support is a separate question. The PS5 firmware, security model, and documented compatibility list determine which game-disc formats can be launched.
Standard PS5 with a built-in drive
The disc-equipped PS5 can use supported PS5 game discs and compatible PS4 game discs. It still does not launch PlayStation 2 software from disc. The drive is therefore useful for the formats Sony supports, but it is not a universal backward-compatibility drive.
Original CFI-1000 Digital Edition
The original CFI-1000 Digital Edition has no disc support. It cannot accept a PS2 disc, and there is no documented way to turn that model into a PS2-disc player.
CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 Digital Edition model groups
Sony says Digital Edition consoles in the CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 model groups can use a separately sold disc drive. That accessory adds the ability to use the supported disc formats for those model groups. It does not add PlayStation 2 game software to the supported list, so attaching it does not change the answer for PS2 discs.

| PS5 configuration | Can it accept a PS2 game disc? | What the drive information means |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 with built-in disc drive | No | Reads the supported PS5 and compatible PS4 game-disc formats, plus documented video-disc types; PS2 software is excluded. |
| Original CFI-1000 Digital Edition | No | This model has no disc support. |
| CFI-2000 Digital Edition with supported add-on drive | No | The accessory provides supported disc functionality for the model group, not PS2 game compatibility. |
| CFI-7000 Digital Edition with supported add-on drive | No | The accessory does not turn PS2 software into a supported format. |
| PlayStation 2 console | Yes, as native PS2 hardware | The original platform is the direct physical match for original PS2 game discs. |
Model-group information can change as Sony updates its hardware range. Check the model number and the current Sony support documentation before buying a Digital Edition or an add-on drive, but do not interpret accessory compatibility as PS2 compatibility.
Do not confuse PS4 backward compatibility with PS2 support
PS5 backward compatibility is primarily a PS4 feature. Sony describes the console as backward compatible with the overwhelming majority of PS4 games, and its ecosystem pages cite more than 4,000 PS4 titles. That is useful if you own PS4 discs or digital licenses, but it does not establish support for older PlayStation formats.
A PS2 game disc is not transformed into a PS4 game merely because the PS5 can run many PS4 games. The disc contains the original PS2 software format, and Sony’s safety guide specifically excludes that format from disc playback.

| Your priority | Most appropriate direction | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Use an original PS2 disc you own | PlayStation 2 console | This is native playback on the original platform, not PS5 emulation. |
| Play current PS5 games and supported PS4 discs | PS5 with a drive | Do not buy it expecting PS2-disc support. |
| Play current games while purchasing digitally | PS5 Digital Edition, if its digital-only design suits you | The original CFI-1000 model has no disc support; newer model groups may accept Sony’s drive accessory, but still not PS2 discs. |
| Play a specific older game available in a modern release | Check that game’s current PlayStation release | A digital edition, remaster, or remake is a separate product from your PS2 disc. |
| Keep using a collection of PS2 discs | Original PS2 hardware, with an appropriate display connection | A video adapter can address a television connection; it cannot make the discs run in a PS5. |
The practical alternative: an original PlayStation 2
If the physical discs are the reason for the purchase, an original PlayStation 2 is the relevant alternative. It provides native playback on the console family for which those discs were produced. This recommendation follows from the documented PS5 limitation; it is not a claim that the PS5 can emulate the discs through an undocumented method.
What to check when buying used hardware
- Disc-reading condition: Ask whether the console reliably reads game discs, not only audio CDs or DVDs.
- Controller and memory-card needs: Confirm that the required accessories are included or available separately.
- Region and model suitability: Match the console and discs to the region and hardware requirements relevant to your collection.
- Video connection: Verify how the console will connect to your television. A PS2-to-HDMI adapter may solve a connector problem, but adapter quality and compatibility vary; no particular model is established here.
- Listing condition: Used-console listings can differ in testing, refurbishment, included cables, and return terms. Treat those as purchase checks rather than assuming every listing is equivalent.
If you already own a PS5 and a PS2 disc
- Identify the desired experience. If you specifically want to use the original disc, stop treating the PS5 as a possible player; Sony’s documented limitation rules it out.
- Check for a separate modern release. Search the PlayStation storefront or publisher information for that exact game. Confirm the edition, region, saved-data behavior, and whether it is a remaster, remake, or other re-release.
- Decide whether original hardware matters. Original hardware preserves the disc-based experience and original platform behavior. A modern release may differ in presentation or features.
- Plan the television connection. If you choose a PS2, confirm the available inputs and the cable or adapter standard before purchasing.
- Do not buy a drive accessory for this purpose. On supported Digital Edition model groups, the accessory adds the documented PS5/PS4 disc capability; it does not add PS2 support.
Common purchasing mistakes
“The PS5 has a Blu-ray drive, so it should read PS2 discs.”
Optical media support is format-specific. A drive can read certain physical media while the console rejects software in an unsupported game format. Sony’s safety guide is the authoritative distinction here.
“The PS5 plays almost every PS4 game, so older PlayStation generations must work too.”
The PS4 compatibility claim is not a generational guarantee. It describes PS4 titles and does not override the explicit exclusion of PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 3 software from disc playback.
“Adding Sony’s drive to a Digital Edition unlocks everything.”
The add-on drive expands physical-media functionality only for the supported model groups and formats. It does not provide a general emulator or make PS2 game discs launchable.

“A digital version proves that my disc is supported.”
A digital version, remaster, or remake is installed under its own license and software package. It can be a way to play the game, but it is not the PS5 reading or converting the original disc.
Costs, availability, and what is not established
No universal price can be stated for a PS5, a compatible drive accessory, or a used PS2 console because prices depend on country, retailer, condition, stock, and time. The same applies to individual digital releases. Verify the current listing, model number, included accessories, region suitability, and return policy before paying.
Sony’s published documentation provides a clear answer about PS2 discs but does not provide a percentage or benchmark for PS2 compatibility, because the documented capability is not offered. There is also no hands-on test needed to establish the buying decision: the official statement that those software formats cannot be played from a disc is sufficient.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBottom line for a PS5 purchase
Buy a PS5 for its current PS5 library and its documented PS4 backward compatibility, not as a machine for original PS2 discs. A built-in drive and a supported add-on drive serve supported PS5 and PS4 media; neither is a PS2 emulator. For a collection of original PS2 game discs, choose original PlayStation 2 hardware and separately solve any television-connection issue.
