Choose a disc-drive PS5 if you want to play compatible PS5 or PS4 game discs or use movie discs. Choose the PS5 Digital Edition if you plan to download games and do not need an optical drive. Sony lists the standard disc-drive PS5 with 1TB of storage and the Digital Edition with 825GB; those are listed capacities, not guarantees about usable space or how many games will fit. What is the difference between PS5 disc and digital?
The standard disc-drive PS5 has an optical drive and supports PS5 and PS4 games on Blu-ray discs, as well as digital downloads. The PS5 Digital Edition has no built-in disc drive; Sony describes it as a console for downloading games from PlayStation Store. The distinction is access to physical media, not whether you can buy games digitally: both configurations support digital games. Sony’s US lineup specifications

Which PS5 should you choose?
Choose a disc-drive PS5 if you use physical media
- You already own compatible PS5 or PS4 game discs and want to keep using them.
- You prefer to purchase or use games in disc form.
- You watch movies on Blu-ray, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, or DVD and want an optical drive available.
Sony specifies that its removable PS5 drive supports PS5 and supported PS4 game discs, plus 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD discs. Check a particular game’s compatibility if it matters to your choice. Sony’s Disc Drive product page

- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
Choose the Digital Edition if you do not need discs
If you expect to buy and download games and do not use movie discs, the Digital Edition avoids paying for an optical drive you do not need. Compare the current local price and listed capacity before deciding which option is better value: prices and bundles can vary, and the cited specifications do not establish that either model is always cheaper.
Can you add a disc drive to a PS5 Digital Edition later?
Only certain Digital Edition model groups support Sony’s separate removable drive. Sony lists compatibility for slim Digital Edition CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 groups; its setup instructions cover CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 groups, including PS5 Pro. Confirm the exact model number on your console and check current Sony documentation before buying; do not assume every Digital Edition can be upgraded. Drive compatibility · Sony setup instructions

The drive is sold separately, not included with the Digital Edition or PS5 Pro. Sony says an internet connection is required to pair the drive during setup. That makes a compatible Digital Edition a possible later route to disc playback, but it adds an accessory purchase and setup step. Sony Disc Drive product page

Does PS5 Pro change the disc-versus-digital decision?
PS5 Pro is a separate choice about performance and capacity, not a replacement for deciding whether you need discs. Sony lists PS5 Pro with 2TB of storage and enhanced visual features in supported games; the specific enhancements vary by game. Its disc drive is a separate purchase, so include the accessory if you want to play physical games or movie discs. Sony’s US PS5 lineup · Drive compatibility

What does Sony say about new game discs from 2028?
Sony’s current US buying page states that newly released PlayStation games from January 2028 will be available for purchase digitally only, while discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on the console. This is a future-dated policy statement on a live product page; check the page for any update before relying on it, and do not read it as saying that existing discs stop working.
