PS5 DualSense controller: Everything you need to know

By VGSources Team 10 min read

Short answer: the standard DualSense is still the most complete controller for PS5 gaming. Its haptic feedback and adaptive triggers can make supported games feel more physical, while motion controls, a touchpad, built-in microphone, speaker, USB-C charging and a headset jack make it unusually versatile. It is also compatible with Windows PCs, Macs, iPhone, iPad, Android and Apple TV—but those platforms do not provide the same feature set.

The main compromises are its built-in battery, inconsistent advanced-feature support on PC, lack of rear buttons and relatively substantial 280 g body. For a PS5 owner buying a second controller, it is the straightforward choice. PC-only players should buy it for its design and supported games, not on the assumption that every title will provide wireless haptics and adaptive triggers.

What is the DualSense?

The DualSense Wireless Controller is Sony’s standard gamepad for PlayStation 5 and the successor to the PS4’s DualShock 4. It connects to PS5 using Sony’s wireless technology or a USB cable, and it can also pair by Bluetooth with compatible computers and mobile devices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sony lists support for Windows 10 64-bit, Windows 11, macOS Big Sur 11.3 or later, iOS 14.5 or later, iPadOS 14.5 or later, Android 12 or later and tvOS 14.5 or later. Compatibility means basic controller input; individual games, operating systems and connection methods determine which extra features work. See Sony’s compatibility and pairing guidance.

#1 Best Overall
Playstation 5 DualSense Wireless Controller - White (Renewed)
  • Haptic feedback - Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions with dual actuators which replace traditional rumble motors. In your hands, these dynamic vibrations can simulate the feeling of everything from environments to the recoil of different weapons. .Operating temperature : 41 °F to 95 °F (5 °C to 35 °C)
  • Adaptive triggers - Experience varying levels of force and tension as you interact with your in-game gear and environments. From pulling back an increasingly tight bowstring to hitting the brakes on a speeding car, feel physically connected to your on-screen actions.
  • Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
  • DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
  • PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.

Do not confuse it with the DualSense Edge. The Edge adds remappable controls, rear buttons, adjustable trigger stops, custom profiles, replaceable stick caps and other enthusiast features. Those are not part of the standard controller.

DualSense features explained

Haptic feedback

Haptic feedback is more precise than traditional one-level rumble. A supported game can vary the sensation to suggest a surface, impact, movement or environmental effect—for example, footsteps, a vehicle crossing different terrain or an object striking the player.

It is not automatic. The game must implement it, and the platform must support it. On PS5, it is one of the controller’s defining features. On Windows PC, Sony says haptic feedback requires a USB connection, and support remains game-dependent. Sony’s current guidance lists haptics as unavailable on Mac and mobile devices. Conventional rumble may still work where full DualSense haptics do not.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Adaptive triggers

The L2 and R2 triggers can dynamically change resistance. A bow may become harder to pull, a weapon can feel like it has a distinct trigger point, or a vehicle’s controls can resist differently as conditions change.

Adaptive triggers are available only when a game supports them. Android devices do not support the feature according to Sony’s compatibility table. PC support is selective and may require USB. A game displaying PlayStation button prompts is not, by itself, proof that adaptive triggers are enabled.

Motion controls

The DualSense contains a motion sensor for compatible aiming, steering and gesture controls. PS5 games can use it directly, but PC games and input layers vary widely: some expose motion input, some ignore it and some require additional configuration.

Touchpad

The clickable touchpad can function as a button, swipe surface or gesture control. Its role is defined by the game. It is not a replacement for a laptop-style multitouch trackpad, and its presence does not guarantee useful touch controls outside PlayStation software.

Microphone and speaker

A built-in microphone enables quick voice chat without a separate headset. The mute button and indicator show the microphone’s status, and the speaker can provide game or chat audio where supported.

A headset is usually better for privacy, sound quality and battery life. Sony lists the microphone and speaker as supported on Windows PC when the game supports them, but not on Mac or mobile devices under its current compatibility guidance.

Create, PS and headset controls

The PS button opens the console interface and handles controller power and pairing. The Create button is used for screenshots, video capture and sharing; the exact menus and behavior can change with PS5 system software.

The 3.5 mm jack supports compatible headsets. On PC and Mac, Sony says the headset jack requires a wired connection. It is not compatible with mobile devices according to Sony’s current support table.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Built-in rechargeable battery

The battery is sealed inside the controller and charges through USB-C. You cannot casually replace it with AA batteries. Haptics, trigger resistance, speaker volume, microphone use, headset use, indicator brightness, wireless conditions and battery age all affect runtime.

DualSense specifications

Specification Detail
Battery Built-in lithium-ion
Capacity 1,560 mAh
Voltage 3.65 V
Weight Approximately 280 g
Charging/data port USB Type-C
Audio 3.5 mm headset jack
Wireless Bluetooth and PS5 wireless connection
Operating temperature 5°C–35°C

These figures come from Sony’s instruction manual. Battery capacity is not a guaranteed play-time specification. An independent roundup has reported roughly six to eight hours in typical use, but that is an estimate rather than Sony’s promise and will change with settings and battery condition.

Check the package carefully before buying. Sony’s standard U.S. product page says a USB cable is not included and directs users to use the cable supplied with the PS5. A specific PC bundle includes a 1.5 m USB-C-to-USB-C cable.

What works on PS5?

PS5 is the DualSense’s best-supported platform. Compatible games can use haptics, adaptive triggers, motion sensing, touchpad input, the speaker and microphone together. Even then, implementation varies: one game may use subtle surface sensations while another may use only basic vibration.

To pair a controller for the first time:

  1. Turn on the PS5.
  2. Connect the DualSense with a compatible USB cable.
  3. Press the PS button.
  4. Disconnect the cable if you want to continue wirelessly.

Up to four controllers can be used simultaneously on PS5, with a player color assigned as each is connected. Useful controller options are under Settings > Accessories > Controller (General). Depending on the system software version, you may find trigger-effect intensity, vibration intensity, indicator brightness, microphone settings, communication method and firmware controls there. Menu labels can change after system updates.

How to connect the DualSense to a Windows PC

USB connection

USB is the safest PC option, particularly if you want advanced DualSense effects. It provides reliable recognition, charges while you play and avoids Bluetooth pairing problems.

  1. Connect the controller to the PC with a USB-C data cable.
  2. Wait for Windows to recognize it.
  3. Start the game after connecting the controller.
  4. Check the game’s controller settings and confirm DualSense support.

Sony’s current documentation specifically says haptic feedback on PC requires USB. Adaptive triggers may also require USB, depending on the game. Neither feature is universal across PC games.

Bluetooth connection

  1. Turn the controller off and disconnect the USB cable.
  2. Hold Create + PS until the light bar flashes.
  3. Open Windows Bluetooth settings.
  4. Select the DualSense controller.

Bluetooth is convenient for ordinary controller input, but it should not be treated as a guarantee of the full PS5 feature set. Many PC games recognize the controller as a generic or XInput-style device and show Xbox button prompts. Steam Input, remapping utilities and game-specific launchers can change how the controller is presented.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a game does not detect it, connect by USB, restart the game after connecting, and check whether Steam Input or another input layer is intercepting it. Native DualSense support must come from the game or its software stack.

Mac, iPhone, iPad, Android and Apple TV

Pairing is similar on each device:

  1. Turn off the controller.
  2. Disconnect any USB cable.
  3. Hold Create + PS until the light bar flashes.
  4. Open the device’s Bluetooth settings.
  5. Select the DualSense.
Platform Minimum OS listed by Sony Important limitations
Mac macOS Big Sur 11.3+ No haptics; microphone and speaker unavailable; headset jack requires wired connection
iPhone/iPad iOS/iPadOS 14.5+ No mobile haptics, adaptive triggers, microphone, speaker or headset-jack support under Sony’s guidance
Android Android 12+ No adaptive triggers; mobile haptics, microphone, speaker and headset jack are not supported under Sony’s guidance
Apple TV tvOS 14.5+ Feature support depends on the game and tvOS

On these platforms, think of the DualSense primarily as a Bluetooth gamepad. It can work with compatible games and supported PS Remote Play configurations, but mobile controller input is not equivalent to playing a native PS5 game locally.

Pairing one DualSense with multiple devices

Sony now documents up to four stored device pairings. These are four saved pairing slots, not four simultaneous active connections.

To switch to a stored slot, hold the relevant action button together with PS for approximately three seconds:

  • Triangle: slot 1
  • Circle: slot 2
  • Cross: slot 3
  • Square: slot 4

The light behavior can depend on the current firmware, so consult Sony’s live pairing instructions if the controller does not switch as expected. Moving back to a PS5 may require reconnecting the controller with a USB cable and pressing PS.

Charging, battery life and charging stations

You can charge and play through USB-C, charge from the PS5 or use Sony’s optional DualSense Charging Station. The station charges up to two controllers and leaves the console’s USB ports available for other devices. It improves charging convenience, not battery capacity or play time.

To extend runtime, lower haptic and trigger intensity, reduce speaker volume, mute the microphone when it is not needed and reduce indicator brightness. If a controller that once lasted much longer now drains unusually fast, battery degradation may be involved. A charging accessory cannot correct a worn battery.

Firmware updates

Using a PS5

  1. Pair the controller with the console.
  2. Open Settings > Accessories > Controller (General).
  3. Select DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Using Windows

  1. Install Sony’s PlayStation Accessories app.
  2. Connect the controller to the PC by USB.
  3. Open the app.
  4. Follow the firmware-update prompt.

Sony recommends keeping both PS5 system software and controller software current. Updates may be needed for proper operation and can address security issues.

Resetting and troubleshooting

Reset procedure

  1. Turn off the PS5.
  2. Find the small reset hole on the rear of the controller.
  3. Press the reset button with a pin or similar tool.
  4. Connect the controller to the PS5 with a compatible USB cable.
  5. Press the PS button.

Sony says a reset does not reconfigure the controller or erase pairing settings. It is useful for connection problems, but it is not a guaranteed repair for drift, battery failure, damaged trigger motors or physical damage.

DualSense versus DualSense Edge

The standard DualSense is the better value for ordinary PS5 play and local multiplayer. The DualSense Edge is aimed at competitive and enthusiast players who will actually use remapping, rear buttons, adjustable trigger stops, custom profiles and replaceable stick caps.

The Edge retains core DualSense immersion, but it is a separate, more expensive buying proposition. Compare its live price, battery expectations and replacement-part costs separately. Choose it for control customization—not because the standard DualSense lacks basic PS5 compatibility.

Players with accessibility requirements should also consider Sony’s PlayStation Access controller, a modular PS5 control kit designed to support more comfortable play for people with disabilities. It is not simply a conventional replacement DualSense.

Is the DualSense worth buying?

  • PS5 owner buying a second controller: Yes. It offers the broadest compatibility with PS5 games and is the least complicated way to preserve haptics and adaptive triggers.
  • PC-only gamer: Maybe. Choose it if you like the layout and will play supported games over USB. Choose something else if guaranteed wireless advanced effects, rear buttons or extensive remapping matter more.
  • Mobile gamer: It is a capable Bluetooth gamepad, but the premium PS5 features largely do not transfer to mobile platforms.
  • Competitive player: Consider the DualSense Edge or a separately verified pro controller if rear buttons, trigger stops and profiles are important.
  • Accessibility-focused buyer: Investigate the PlayStation Access controller and other modular solutions before choosing a conventional DualSense.
  • Long-session gamer: The comfortable design may appeal, but the built-in battery and usage-dependent endurance are disadvantages compared with controllers using replaceable batteries or larger battery systems.

For current purchases, check the exact color, bundle, price, stock, warranty and cable contents on the retailer page. Sony’s standard U.S. listing does not expose a stable price in all page views, and color editions can differ in availability without changing performance. The official listing is Sony Direct’s DualSense page.

Remote Play and PS4 compatibility

The DualSense is not a general-purpose native controller for PS4. It can be used with supported PS Remote Play setups, but that is different from connecting it directly to a PS4 and receiving the full DualSense feature set.

Remote Play also has feature limits. Sony states that PS4 games streamed through Remote Play use basic rumble instead of haptic feedback and do not support adaptive triggers. Network, app, console and game requirements still apply.
