If your PS5 DualSense D-pad is not responding, first test it in a PS5 menu and another game, then reset the controller using Sony’s procedure. If the problem remains, update PS5 system software and use PlayStation Repairs before opening the controller. A repair guide may not fit every DualSense revision, so check the model and warranty first.
Check whether the D-pad fails everywhere
Try the directional buttons in a PS5 menu and in another game. If you are using the controller with another supported device, compare the input there too. This is a practical way to tell whether the issue appears limited to one game or setup; it is not a Sony-prescribed D-pad test. Controller input and features can vary by game and device, so a different result outside the PS5 does not by itself prove the controller is defective. Sony’s controller guidance explains that support depends on the device and game.
Note what is happening before troubleshooting: whether all four directions fail or just one, whether input cuts in and out or seems stuck, and whether the problem began after a spill, impact, or previous repair. Those details can help distinguish a broad input problem from one direction or one context, but none establishes a cause on its own.
Reset the DualSense using Sony’s procedure
- Turn off the PS5.
- Disconnect the DualSense from the official USB cable.
- Use a pin or similar tool to press and hold the small reset button on the back of the controller for at least five seconds.
- Reconnect the controller to the PS5 with the official USB cable, then press the PS button.
Sony’s US support instructions specify holding the button “for at least 5 seconds.” See Sony’s DualSense troubleshooting steps. This reset is the first safe step; it does not require opening the controller.

- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Update PS5 system software if the problem remains
If the PS5 is still operable and the D-pad continues to fail after the reset, check for and install available PS5 system software updates. Sony recommends updating the console software as part of troubleshooting and then selecting the relevant issue in PlayStation Repairs. Its cited instructions do not call for a separate D-pad-specific controller firmware update, so do not treat one as a required step. Sony’s troubleshooting page provides the update and repair pathway.
Check warranty and official repair before disassembly
If reset and system software steps do not restore input, use PlayStation Repairs to select the controller issue and see the available next steps. Before disassembling the controller, check your purchase date, proof of purchase, and the warranty terms for your region.

In the United States, Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC’s 2021 DualSense manual states a limited warranty period of one year from purchase for the original purchaser, subject to its terms and proof-of-purchase provisions. That US warranty statement should not be assumed to apply elsewhere; check the manual or support terms for your country. Sony’s US DualSense manual contains the warranty language.
DIY button repair depends on controller revision
Opening a controller is an optional repair route, not the next mandatory step or a guaranteed fix. iFixit notes that debris can be one possible button problem and provides a button-replacement guide, but the guide warns that it applies to DualSense controllers whose FCC ID ends in 1. Controllers whose FCC ID ends in A have internal design differences. Check the FCC ID on the back of your controller before relying on the guide or buying parts.
