Sony reported 9.5 million PS5 hardware units sold into retail during October–December 2024, its strongest PS5 holiday-quarter result in the company’s published quarterly series through that period. That lifted cumulative PS5 sell-in to roughly 75 million by the end of 2024. These are historical figures: Sony’s latest reported total is more than 95 million units sold in on a sell-in basis as of June 30, 2026.
How many PS5 consoles had Sony sold by the end of 2024?
Sony’s rounded cumulative figure put PS5 at about 75 million units sold in by December 31, 2024. The figure refers to sell-in: Sony’s sales into the retail channel, rather than a count of consoles purchased by consumers during that quarter. Sony’s FY2024 third-quarter results cover October through December 2024 and were issued on February 13, 2025. Sony’s FY2024 Q3 supplemental information identifies the quarterly hardware measure as sell-in.
The 75 million figure is therefore a historical milestone, not Sony’s current cumulative total. Sony Interactive Entertainment reports more than 95 million PS5 hardware units sold in worldwide on a sell-in basis as of June 30, 2026. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s business data provides that later dated total.
Why Sony called it a record holiday quarter
Sony reported 9.5 million PS5 hardware units sold in during FY2024 Q3, compared with 8.2 million in the same October–December period a year earlier. That is an increase of 1.3 million units, or about 16% year over year, based on Sony’s reported figures. In the PS5 quarterly hardware series published through FY2024 Q3, 9.5 million was the highest October–December result.

The record needs that scope: it is a record for PS5 quarterly hardware sell-in in the listed series. It does not establish a record across all consoles, consumer purchases, every holiday season, or PlayStation sales overall.

Sell-in is not the same as consoles bought by players
Sell-in counts hardware sold by Sony into the retail channel. It should not be read as the number of PS5 consoles consumers bought in that same quarter. Sony reports consumer sell-through separately: on December 9, 2023, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that PS5 had passed 50 million units sold through to consumers. Sony’s announcement of the 50 million consumer-sales milestone uses that distinct measure.
Because the 9.5 million quarterly figure is sell-in, it cannot by itself establish how many consoles reached players in October–December 2024. Nor should it be directly compared with third-party consumer-sales estimates unless the measures, dates, and geographic coverage match.

What Sony said about the audience
Sony’s FY2024 Q3 earnings presentation also reported 129 million monthly active PlayStation users in December 2024, describing it as the highest number in PlayStation history at that time. The presentation said more than 40% of users who purchased a PS5 during the quarter were new users. These are company-reported engagement and purchaser figures, rather than independent market estimates. Sony’s FY2024 Q3 earnings presentation, published February 13, 2025, also said PS5 cumulative unit sales from launch through December were essentially at the same level as PS4’s over the same period since launch, despite PS5’s higher price.
