The PS5 home-screen imagery that looked like ads replacing game artwork in late September 2024 was, according to Sony, a technical error—not a change to how game news is displayed. Ask PlayStation said on October 1 that the Official News feature error had been resolved. The separate Welcome hub rollout was an announced feature; available sources do not show that it caused the display problem.
What happened to PS5 home-screen artwork?
In late September 2024, PS5 players reported that news or promotional imagery appeared across the background after they highlighted a game, where they expected that title’s artwork. Some of the images were described at the time as outdated or irrelevant, prompting players to call the display intrusive ads or an unwanted update. Those were users’ reactions to the unexpected behavior, not Sony’s description of its cause.
On October 1, Sony’s official North American support account, Ask PlayStation, said: “A tech error with the Official News feature on the PS5 console has since been resolved. There have been no changes to the way game news is displayed on PS5.” TechRadar reported the statement, as did Video Games Chronicle.
Was it a bug or an intentional update?
For the widely reported September 2024 incident, Sony said it was a technical error in Official News and that it had been fixed. Sony also said the way game news is displayed had not changed. That answers the “bug or update?” question for this specific incident; it does not establish that every kind of PS5 home-screen content is non-promotional or that the interface never changes.

Was the Welcome hub responsible?
No causal link is established by the available statements. Sony announced the Welcome hub on September 12, 2024, as a new, customizable PS5 home-screen space with widgets and backgrounds, rolling out gradually across regions. It was an intended feature, distinct from the Official News display error Sony addressed later. The PlayStation.Blog announcement describes the hub; it does not say that the hub caused the unexpected imagery.

What to do if your PS5 still displays unexpected imagery
Sony’s statement resolves the specific 2024 incident; it does not confirm that every later or individual-console display issue has the same cause. If the screen is behaving unexpectedly now, check the console’s system software status, then contact PlayStation Support if the problem persists.
