The “Palworld has lost 97% of its players on Steam” figure described a specific moment: on April 1, 2024, the game’s reported 24-hour Steam peak was 69,850, compared with a launch-era concurrent-player peak above 2.1 million. It was never a count of unique owners who quit, and it is not a description of the game’s entire trajectory. Palworld surged again around its July 2026 full release before its Steam numbers fell back in the months that followed.
What did the 97% figure actually measure?
Insider Gaming published the 97% framing on April 1, 2024, comparing a then-current Steam 24-hour peak of 69,850 with Palworld’s launch-era peak. SteamDB lists the all-time Steam concurrent-player peak as 2,101,867, reached on January 27, 2024. Using those figures, the April observation was about 96.7% below the record, which rounds to 97%. Insider Gaming’s April 2024 report supplies the dated comparison; SteamDB’s Palworld chart records the all-time peak.
That percentage compares two concurrent-player observations, not the number of people who bought the game, the number of unique accounts that ever played, or the share of owners who permanently stopped. A concurrent count is the number playing at the same time. A peak is the highest observed simultaneous count within a stated period; it is not a cumulative total.
How Palworld’s Steam numbers changed over time
SteamCharts’ monthly data shows both the steep post-launch contraction and a later, substantial rebound. The figures below all come from SteamCharts and use its own monthly averages and peaks, so unlike mixed-provider comparisons they share one source and methodology.

| Period | Steam concurrent-player figure | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| January 2024 | 2,101,535 peak | SteamCharts’ monthly peak during the launch month. |
| April 1, 2024 | 69,850 24-hour peak | The figure cited by Insider Gaming for its dated 97% comparison; it is not an April monthly average. |
| July 2026 | 404,614.04 average; 956,613 peak | SteamCharts’ monthly average and peak during the July 1.0 release period. |
| September 2026 | 77,109.91 average; 168,183 peak | The latest complete month shown in the chart at the time of the cited data. |
SteamCharts’ Palworld page lists the monthly figures. Its January 2024 peak is 2,101,535, slightly different from SteamDB’s 2,101,867 all-time figure. Those are separate providers’ reported values; the small discrepancy is a reason to keep each provider’s series distinct, not to treat the numbers as identical.
Why did the player count rise again in 2026?
Palworld reached full release in July 2026, more than two years after its January 2024 Early Access launch. Steam’s listing displays July 9, 2026 as the full-release date in its locale, while SteamDB records the Steam release timestamp on July 10, 2026 UTC; these are timezone/display-date differences, so “July 2026” is the clearest date unless a timezone is specified. Steam’s Palworld listing identifies the Early Access date and full-release date. Gamereactor reported a 435,430 concurrent-player peak on July 10, using data available at publication; SteamCharts’ later full-month total reached a 956,613 monthly peak. The earlier report was an interim reading, not the completed July result. Gamereactor’s July 10 report provides that dated snapshot.

The September figures show that the post-release surge did not hold at July’s level. They do not, by themselves, explain why individual players returned or left, or establish that the game was abandoned or commercially unsuccessful. The April 2024 article observed that Palworld was not built as a daily-login live-service game; that was contemporary context, not proof of the cause of every later movement in the chart.

These statistics cover Steam concurrent users only. The official listing describes Palworld as a game about Pals, survival, mounts, exploration, and building, and lists single-player, online co-op, and cross-platform multiplayer features. But the cited chart providers do not publish a combined simultaneous-player total for Steam, Xbox, PlayStation, or other platforms. The Steam figures therefore cannot establish Palworld’s full audience across platforms.

Steam lists Pocketpair as both developer and publisher. Its store copy describes a world where players can “peacefully live alongside mysterious creatures known as Pals or risk your life to drive off a ruthless poaching syndicate.” That description helps identify the game, but player-count charts answer a narrower question: how many people were playing on Steam concurrently at particular times.
