Automatic game and app updates also need their own setting enabled. Then leave the console in Rest Mode—not fully powered off—and check any stalled download in Downloads/Uploads.
Enable the Rest Mode internet setting
- On your PS5, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet.
- Put the console into Rest Mode. A fully powered-off PS5 cannot perform downloads in Rest Mode.
Sony says this setting allows automatic downloads or updates while the console is in Rest Mode. The menu wording may vary slightly by system software or language. See PlayStation’s instructions for automatic downloads and updates.
Set automatic updates separately
If the issue is a game or app update, enabling an internet connection in Rest Mode is not the only step. Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates, then choose the behavior you want:
- Auto-Download: lets updates download automatically. Choose this if you want to leave a suspended game open; you can decide whether to install the update after resuming.
- Auto-Install in Rest Mode: lets eligible updates install while the console is in Rest Mode.
These controls apply to game and app updates and are separate from Stay Connected to the Internet. Sony also says remote downloads are available after automatic downloads and updates are enabled.

Restart a download that has not started or has stalled
- Open Downloads/Uploads from the Control Center.
- Select the affected download, choose Pause, then choose Resume.
- If it still will not start, cancel or delete it and try downloading it again from your Game Library.
A new purchase that has not begun and a download that stopped partway through are different symptoms, but both can be checked from Downloads/Uploads. Sony’s PS5 download troubleshooting guide covers downloads that will not start or are stuck.
Check service, connection, and storage
If resuming does not help, check the likely blockers before repeatedly retrying:

- PlayStation service: Check PlayStation Network service status for an outage or disruption.
- Internet connection: On the console, go to Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection.
- Free space: Check Settings > Storage and compare available space with the game’s requirements. Insufficient space can stop a download or copy operation. One Sony storage-error page advises that installation may require reserving approximately twice the stated required space; that guidance is specific to the error described there, not a universal rule for all downloads. - System software: Check whether the console has a system software update available, as Sony includes this among its download troubleshooting checks.
Try Safe Mode only if the download remains stuck
If the download is still stuck after checking service status, the connection, and storage, Sony includes Clear Cache and Rebuild Database among the Safe Mode troubleshooting options. Follow Sony’s Safe Mode instructions and read the on-screen options carefully before proceeding.

If the console displays an error code, look it up in PlayStation Support’s error-code lookup; remedies can differ by code. For CE-107928-7, Sony advises trying the download again, testing the internet connection, then turning off the modem or router for five minutes before restarting it. Those steps are specific to that error; use Sony’s CE-107928-7 guidance if that is the code on your screen.

When more storage is the actual problem
If the PS5 does not have enough free space, a compatible M.2 SSD is one possible way to add storage. Sony says an installed M.2 SSD can be used to download, copy, and launch PS5 and PS4 games. Check Sony’s current M.2 SSD compatibility and installation requirements before choosing a drive. Extra storage will not resolve a disabled Rest Mode internet setting, an unstable connection, or a PlayStation service disruption.
Why a download may not finish while the PS5 rests
Sony does not promise a fixed download speed or completion time. File size, network performance, service availability, free space, and whether a title needs another action can affect whether a download starts or completes. Use the checks above to identify the cause rather than assuming Rest Mode guarantees a particular result.
