Its latest listed recommended retail prices (RRPs) took effect on April 2, 2026, in the U.S., U.K., Europe and Japan. Sony called the 2026 increase global, but its published table gives exact prices only for those four market labels; buyers elsewhere should check local retailers or direct.playstation.com where available.
What are the new PS5 prices?
Sony Interactive Entertainment’s March 27, 2026 announcement set the following RRPs, effective April 2, 2026. These are Sony’s recommended prices, not guaranteed prices at every store.
| Market label in Sony’s announcement | PS5 with disc drive | PS5 Digital Edition | PS5 Pro | Effective date |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| U.S. | $649.99 | $599.99 | $899.99 | April 2, 2026 |
| U.K. | £569.99 | £519.99 | £789.99 | April 2, 2026 |
| Europe | €649.99 | €599.99 | €899.99 | April 2, 2026 |
| Japan | ¥97,980 | ¥89,980 | ¥137,980 | April 2, 2026 |
These figures come from Sony’s March 27, 2026 pricing announcement. “Europe” is Sony’s market label; it should not be read as a claim that every European country has identical retailer pricing or availability. Check a local seller for the transaction price, which can vary with promotions, taxes, stock and product configuration.
Which countries are affected by the PS5 price increase?
The answer depends on which announcement you mean. In 2026, Sony described the increase as global, but published exact console RRPs only for the U.S., U.K., Europe and Japan. It directed customers in other territories to local retailers or direct.playstation.com where available. The 2025 and 2022 rounds covered different markets and models; Sony also warned that some additional markets might be affected without listing every one.

2026: global description, four published market labels
Sony’s March 27, 2026 post lists new PS5, PS5 Digital Edition and PS5 Pro RRPs for the U.S., U.K., Europe and Japan, effective April 2. It does not provide a complete country-by-country price table for the rest of the world. For a country not listed, do not assume a converted price from another currency is its local RRP.
2025: selected EMEA markets, Australia and New Zealand
On April 13, 2025, Sony announced that changes would start April 14. The PS5 Digital Edition RRP rose to €499.99 in Europe and £429.99 in the U.K.; the standard disc-drive PS5 did not change price in either market. In Australia, the new RRPs were AUD $829.95 for the standard PS5 and AUD $749.95 for Digital Edition. In New Zealand, they were NZD $949.95 and NZD $859.95, respectively. Sony said PS5 Pro prices were unchanged in this round.

That announcement does not establish current accessory stock or compatibility with every PS5 hardware revision. See Sony’s April 13, 2025 announcement for its wording and market details.
2022: selected EMEA, APAC and LATAM markets, plus Canada
Sony announced the 2022 increases on August 25, effective immediately except where it named a later date. It explicitly said there would be no U.S. increase in that round. Listed examples included:

When did the new PS5 prices take effect?
The latest published PS5 console RRPs took effect April 2, 2026. Earlier rounds had separate effective dates: April 14, 2025 for the 2025 changes; August 25, 2022 for most listed 2022 markets; and September 15, 2022 in Japan. The announcement date and the date a price applies are not always the same, so check both when interpreting an older report.

Why did PS5 prices go up?
For the 2026 decision, Sony’s stated reason was “continued pressures in the global economic landscape.” Isabelle Tomatis, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Vice President, Global Marketing, said the company had decided to raise prices globally after careful evaluation, calling the move necessary to continue delivering gaming experiences. Sony did not attribute that announcement to a specific tariff, component or country-level cause.
For the 2025 increase, Sony cited a challenging economic environment, including high inflation and fluctuating exchange rates. In 2022, then-SIE President and CEO Jim Ryan cited high global inflation and adverse currency trends. These are Sony’s explanations for its decisions, not an independently demonstrated breakdown of the causes.

Separately, Sony Group’s FY2025 earnings Q&A said rising memory prices increase bill-of-materials and manufacturing costs. Sony said it had secured the memory volumes needed for 2026 and agreed on pricing to some extent; it expected memory prices to stay elevated and supply-demand conditions to remain tight through 2027. That Q&A is cost context, not Sony’s stated explanation for the March 2026 PS5 price announcement. See Sony Group’s FY2025 earnings Q&A.
How do the 2026 prices compare with PS5 launch prices?
Sony’s 2020 launch RRPs in the U.S. were $499.99 for the disc-drive PS5 and $399.99 for Digital Edition. Compared with those original U.S. launch RRPs, the 2026 listed prices are $150 higher for the disc-drive model and $200 higher for Digital Edition. This is a comparison of listed RRPs across time, not an inflation-adjusted calculation or a complete record of every intervening price change. Sony’s original announcement also listed launch RRPs of ¥49,980 and ¥39,980 in Japan, and €499.99 and €399.99 in Europe, respectively. See Sony’s 2020 launch-price announcement.
Quick Recap
How to check what a PS5 costs where you live
- Identify the model. Compare the disc-drive PS5, Digital Edition and PS5 Pro separately; their RRPs differ.
- Check your country’s local listing. Use a local retailer or direct.playstation.com where available. Sony’s 2026 post does not supply exact RRPs for every country.
- Compare the actual checkout price. Retailers may sell above or below RRP, and taxes, promotions, stock and configuration can affect the final price.
- Confirm the listing is for the console you want. A bundle, console-only product and accessory are not interchangeable price comparisons.
