The PS5 Pro is worth considering if you regularly play games with Pro-specific enhancements, have a suitable 4K display, and value improved image quality or performance enough to pay more. It is a tougher buy if a standard PS5 already meets your needs—especially if you also want to play physical discs, since the Pro is sold without a disc drive.

What does the extra money get you?
The Pro’s main appeal is additional graphics hardware and features intended to improve image quality or performance in supported games. In its September 2024 launch announcement, Sony said the Pro had 67% more GPU Compute Units than the then-current PS5, memory 28% faster, and rendering “up to 45 percent faster.” The last figure is Sony’s maximum claim, not a guaranteed improvement in every game. Sony also highlighted advanced ray tracing and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), its machine-learning-based upscaling technology. Sony’s PS5 Pro launch announcement.

- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
- 2TB SSD: The Pro has a 2TB SSD, as listed in Sony’s launch announcement and current US product listing.
- Wi-Fi 7: Supported in territories where that wireless standard is available.
- Game Boost: Sony said the feature can apply to more than 8,500 backward-compatible PS4 games. Sony also says enhanced image quality is available for select PS4 games.
- Same PS5 ecosystem: The Pro plays PS5 games and shares the multiplayer community with other PS5 players.
Sony’s US product listing advertises up to 120fps with 4K output. That is a console capability claim, not a promise that every game runs at 120 frames per second or at native 4K. Actual modes and results depend on the game. Sony’s US PlayStation Direct PS5 Pro listing.
Do your games benefit from the Pro?
Pro enhancements are selective and vary by title. Sony’s launch announcement named Alan Wake 2, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, Demon’s Souls, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Gran Turismo 7, Hogwarts Legacy, Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and The Last of Us Part II Remastered as examples. That launch-era sample is not a complete or current list. Check Sony’s current PS5 Pro enhanced-games listing and confirm that the titles you actually play have enhancements you care about.
A long list of supported games does not mean every game in your library gets the same boost. If your regular games are not enhanced—or you are already happy with how they look and run on a standard PS5—the hardware premium may be difficult to notice in your day-to-day play.

For a physical PS5 or PS4 game collection, or Blu-ray movie playback, include the compatible detachable drive in your total cost. Sony’s compatibility guide also marks the vertical stand as compatible; the horizontal feet are already included, so the stand is optional. PS5 CFI-1000 and CFI-2000 console covers and the PS5 console base are not compatible with the Pro. Check the model and accessory before buying: PlayStation Support’s PS5 Pro compatibility guide.
PS5 Pro or standard PS5: how to decide
Choose the PS5 Pro if
- You play games with Pro enhancements and expect to benefit from their specific image-quality or performance modes.
- You use a suitable 4K display and care about sharper image clarity, higher frame rates, or advanced ray tracing where a game supports them.
- You are comfortable with the higher local price and, if needed, the separate cost of a disc drive.
Choose a standard PS5 if
- You are satisfied with the performance and image quality you already get from a standard PS5.
- Your favorite games do not have Pro enhancements you value.
- You want to keep the purchase price down, particularly if you need physical media support.
If you already own a PS5
Compare the price of replacing a working console with the particular games and display benefits you expect to use. Sony’s specifications describe what the Pro offers, but they do not establish that an upgrade is good value for every owner. The deciding question is whether those specific improvements matter enough to you to justify the extra cost.
