A PS5 Pro that will not read, accept, or eject a disc is not automatically suffering from a failed drive. Start by confirming that your console has the detachable drive installed and paired, then test a clean, supported disc. Only after those checks should you use Safe Mode, and data-erasing reset options belong at the end.
The sequence below follows Sony’s current PlayStation guidance and separates a bad or unsupported disc from a setup, software, recognition, or mechanical problem.

Does the PS5 Pro need a separate disc drive?
Yes. The PS5 Pro CFI-7000 family is compatible with Sony’s detachable disc drive and matching cover. A PS5 Pro sold without the drive cannot read discs until a compatible unit, such as Sony’s CFI-ZDD1 disc drive, is installed. An absent drive is therefore a configuration difference, not evidence that the console is malfunctioning.
If you have just installed a drive, the console and drive must complete an initial pairing process over the internet. A drive that has not finished pairing can behave differently from one with a mechanical reading fault.

Confirm the console and drive
- Check that the console model is in the PS5 Pro CFI-7000 family.
- Verify that the detachable drive and its cover are physically fitted, rather than assuming the console includes an internal drive.
- If the drive is new or has been moved to this console, connect the PS5 Pro to a working internet connection and complete the on-screen pairing prompt.
Install a newly attached drive safely
Sony’s CFI-2000/7000 setup guidance says to turn off the console, disconnect its power and other cables, and let it cool before attaching the drive. Align the drive’s clips with the two holes in the console and press until the clips click into place. Fit the supplied cover and the longer feet required for the installed configuration.
Do not touch the drive terminal or the matching connector inside the console. Those electrical contacts are not user-serviceable. If the clips do not align or the cover will not seat normally, stop rather than forcing the assembly.
Before troubleshooting, identify what is actually failing
Write down whether the problem is reading, accepting, or ejecting. Also note whether it affects one disc or every disc, whether the console detects the drive, and whether an error code appears. Those distinctions determine the safest next step. A single scratched movie is a different problem from a drive that is absent after installation, and neither should be diagnosed from the title or a single symptom alone.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do not repeatedly insert and eject a disc to “test” the mechanism. One careful test with a known-good, supported disc is more useful than repeated attempts that could worsen a jam. Keep the console on a stable surface, and stop if you hear grinding, clicking, or other abnormal mechanical sounds.
Why is my PS5 Pro not reading discs?
Use a one-disc-versus-many-discs test. If only one disc fails while several other supported discs work, concentrate on that disc or its format. If every supported disc fails, continue through the pairing, software, and recognition checks below.
Insert the disc in the correct orientation
With the PS5 Pro standing vertically on its stand, Sony says the labeled side of the disc faces left as you insert it. Remove and reinsert the disc after each check so you know which change produced the result. If your console is positioned horizontally, consult the instructions for that exact model and orientation rather than guessing.
Clean the disc without damaging it
Fingerprints, dust, and scratches can prevent a disc from being read. Use a soft, clean, lint-free cloth intended for Blu-ray or DVD discs. Wipe from the center toward the outer edge, not in a circular path. Do not use abrasive materials, solvents, or household cleaners.
Try more than one supported disc
Test another PS5 game, a compatible PS4 Blu-ray game, a commercial Blu-ray, and a DVD if you have them. The pattern is more useful than a single failure:

- Several supported discs fail: check drive installation and pairing, then perform the software steps in the order described later.
- No disc is accepted, or the drive makes repeated mechanical noises: stop repeated insert/eject attempts and arrange service after the basic checks.
Check whether the medium is supported
PS5 consoles do not play burned discs or audio CDs. Disc-based PlayStation software in PS1, PS2, and PS3 formats also cannot be played from disc. The CFI-ZDD1 manual lists the following media categories, subject to the stated format and version limitations:
| Media category | Examples documented by Sony | What to do if it fails |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 game media | PS5 Ultra HD Blu-ray | Try another PS5 game to determine whether the problem follows one disc. |
| PS4 game media | Compatible PS4 Blu-ray | Confirm the disc is an original supported game disc. |
| Blu-ray video and data media | Ultra HD Blu-ray, BD-ROM, BD-R, and BD-RE, with a BD-RE version exception in the manual | Check the exact format and disc condition. |
| DVD media | DVD-ROM, DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, and AVCHD | Test a commercial DVD if available. |
| Unsupported examples | Burned discs, audio CDs, and PS1, PS2, or PS3 software discs | Use a supported format; cleaning or resetting will not add compatibility. |
Do not infer support for a format simply because it resembles one of the listed categories. The manual’s exact media and version notes control. If you are testing a recordable disc, an audio CD, or older PlayStation software, a failure is expected rather than evidence of a broken reader.
Check drive attachment and first-use pairing
A drive can be physically present yet not ready for use. This is especially likely after a new installation, console replacement, or drive reattachment.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Turn the PS5 Pro completely off, disconnect the power and cables, and allow it to cool.
- Inspect the cover and drive fit. The clips should be aligned with the two holes and fully clicked in; the cover should sit flush without pressure.
- Reconnect the console and start it with a reliable internet connection.
- Complete any prompt that pairs the detachable drive with the console. Do not interrupt the process by disconnecting power.
- After pairing, insert a clean, supported disc with the labeled side facing left when the console is vertical.
If the drive was never paired, treat a first-use failure as an incomplete setup possibility before concluding that the drive is defective. A drive moved between consoles may also require the pairing process again. If the console cannot complete pairing, record any message or code before trying a reset.
Why won’t my PS5 Pro take or eject a disc?
Do not push harder, insert a second disc, shake the console, or repeatedly power-cycle it while a disc is trapped. A stuck disc requires Sony’s manual-release procedure, and the console must remain off while the cover is removed.
Before attempting manual release
- Work on a stable, well-lit surface; a small flashlight is optional.
- Have a #1 Phillips or cross-hatch screwdriver ready.
- Turn the console off completely and disconnect every cable and accessory.
- Remove the stand and the drive cover according to the instructions for your exact PS5 Pro configuration.
Release the disc
- With the console disconnected and the drive exposed as directed for your model, locate the manual-release screw.
- Turn the screw clockwise with the #1 Phillips or cross-hatch screwdriver.
- Continue until the disc is almost fully visible.
- Gently remove the disc without bending it or pulling against the mechanism.
- Reinstall the cover and stand exactly as specified before reconnecting the console.
Sony’s explicit warning is: “Do not forcibly pull the disc from the disc drive.” It also states: “Don’t turn on or play on your console with the cover off.” If you cannot identify the correct cover-removal points for your model, stop and use PlayStation Repairs instead of experimenting. Never put a finger or tool into the slot to pry the disc out.
Use Safe Mode software fixes in the correct order
Once the drive is installed and paired and multiple supported discs still fail, Sony recommends using Safe Mode to clear temporary cache data and rebuild the database. These actions precede system reinstallation because they are less destructive.
Clear cache and rebuild the database
- Turn the console off.
- Enter Safe Mode using the PS5 power-button procedure: press and hold the button until you hear the second beep, then connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button.
- Select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database.
- Run the cache-clearing option first, then rebuild the database if the disc problem remains.
- After the console restarts, test a clean, supported disc.
Database rebuilding can take time. Do not disconnect power while the console is processing. If the menu offers several choices, select only the cache and database options at this stage; do not jump directly to a reset because a disc is unreadable.

Reinstall system software only as a last software step
If rebuilding does not resolve the reading problem, Sony lists Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) as a later option. Back up saved data and any other information you need before selecting it. Sony’s warning is exact: “Selecting Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) deletes all information on the console.”
This is not a routine disc-reading check. It is a data-erasing recovery action. If the drive is not detected, the console shows a recognition code, or mechanical symptoms continue, service may be more appropriate than wiping the console. Make sure you understand which Safe Mode option is highlighted before confirming.
What does PS5 error SU-101312-8 mean?
SU-101312-8 means the PS5 cannot detect a Blu-ray Disc drive. On a PS5 Pro, first confirm that the detachable drive is installed and has completed pairing. If you have not physically removed the drive, Sony’s troubleshooting sequence is:
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

- Restart the router after waiting at least five minutes.
- Restart the console.
- Open Notifications and delete the system-update file listed there.
- Retry the system update.
If those actions fail, Sony suggests resetting the console. Resetting erases console data, so back up what you can before proceeding. A persistent SU-101312-8 message after correct installation, pairing, power, router, and update checks is a reason to contact PlayStation Repairs; the code alone does not prove which component has failed.
Choose the next action by symptom
| Observed pattern | Most useful next check | Risk level of the action |
|---|---|---|
| The PS5 Pro has no drive installed | Confirm compatibility and install a PS5 Pro-compatible detachable drive with its cover; complete internet pairing. | Normal setup; do not force clips or touch terminals. |
| One disc fails, others work | Clean the disc, inspect for damage, and verify that its format is supported. | Reversible. |
| Several supported discs fail | Verify orientation, attachment, pairing, then use Safe Mode cache clearing and database rebuilding. | Generally reversible; do not interrupt power. |
| No disc will enter or leave the drive | Power off, unplug, and follow the model-specific manual-release procedure. | Mechanical handling; never force the disc or operate with the cover off. |
| SU-101312-8 appears | Follow Sony’s power, router, notification-update, and retry sequence. | Reversible until a reset is selected. |
| Reset or reinstall is being considered | Back up first and use it only after less destructive checks fail. | Data-erasing. |
| Failure persists across supported discs | Contact PlayStation Repairs for diagnosis. | Service evaluation; do not assume a specific failed part. |
Common mistakes that can make diagnosis harder
- Assuming every PS5 Pro has a reader: the detachable drive is an accessory configuration, so verify it before troubleshooting.
- Testing only one disc: a single damaged or unsupported disc cannot establish a drive fault.
- Using the wrong orientation: on a vertical console, the label faces left; do not guess when the console is horizontal.
- Forcing the cover or disc: misaligned clips and trapped media need the model-specific instructions, not pressure.
- Skipping pairing: internet pairing is part of initial drive setup.
- Resetting too early: cache clearing and database rebuilding come first, and reinstalling deletes console information.
- Operating with the cover removed: Sony expressly says not to turn on or play with the cover off.
When to contact PlayStation Repairs
Use Sony’s repair channel when the supported-disc tests, installation and pairing checks, Safe Mode steps, and any applicable SU-101312-8 procedure do not restore operation. Service is particularly appropriate when:
- Multiple clean, supported discs fail consistently.
- The drive repeatedly disappears or the console repeatedly reports that it cannot detect a Blu-ray Disc drive.
- The mechanism makes grinding, clicking, or other abnormal noises.
- The drive will not accept or eject a disc after the safe manual-release attempt.
- You are unsure how to remove the cover for your exact model.
These symptoms justify professional diagnosis, but they do not identify a particular failed component by themselves. Keep the console configuration, error code, discs tested, and steps already completed available when you contact support. Also note whether the drive was newly installed, whether pairing completed, and whether the problem began after an update or a physical jam.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you buy a replacement drive?
Only consider a replacement when your PS5 Pro does not include the detachable drive or when Sony has confirmed that the installed drive is defective. Sony’s CFI-ZDD1 is the documented PS5 Pro-compatible disc drive. Buying a drive will not fix an unsupported disc, incomplete pairing, dirty media, a software issue, or a console-side fault.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA lint-free optical-disc cloth and a #1 Phillips screwdriver are useful task supplies for cleaning and the safe manual-release procedure. Neither item repairs a failing drive, and neither should be used to force a disc or open the mechanism beyond Sony’s instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a PS5 Pro read discs without the detachable drive?
No. The PS5 Pro CFI-7000 family uses a compatible detachable drive and cover. Install and pair the drive over the internet before testing discs.
Why does my PS5 Pro read one game but not another?
That pattern points first to the individual disc: clean it from the center outward, inspect for damage, and confirm its format is supported. Burned discs, audio CDs, and PS1, PS2, and PS3 software discs are unsupported.
Do I need internet for a PS5 Pro disc drive?
Sony requires an internet connection during the initial pairing of the detachable drive and console. Complete that prompt before treating a first-use failure as a hardware fault.
Is SU-101312-8 proof that the disc drive is broken?
No. The code means the console cannot detect a Blu-ray Disc drive. Check installation and pairing, then follow Sony’s unplug, router, notification-update, and retry steps before considering a data-erasing reset or service.
How do I remove a disc stuck in a PS5 Pro?
Power off, unplug every cable, remove the stand and cover using the instructions for your exact configuration, and turn the manual-release screw clockwise with a #1 Phillips or cross-head screwdriver until the disc is nearly visible. Never pull forcibly or operate the console with the cover off.
Will rebuilding the PS5 database delete my games and saves?
Sony places cache clearing and database rebuilding before system reinstallation. Back up important data anyway, and do not select Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) unless you understand that it deletes all information on the console.
When should I stop troubleshooting at home?
Contact PlayStation Repairs when several clean, supported discs fail, the drive is repeatedly not detected, abnormal mechanical noises occur, or the drive will not accept or eject media after the safe manual-release procedure.
The Bottom Line
Confirm the detachable drive, complete internet pairing, test clean supported discs, and use Safe Mode cache and database tools before considering any reset. Never force a stuck disc or operate with the cover off. If recognition, reading, or mechanical problems persist, use PlayStation Repairs rather than guessing which component failed.
