Buy the digital edition if you want to download Metroid Dread directly to your Nintendo Switch and have enough free storage. Buy the physical edition if you prefer a game card and want the practical option of lending or reselling your copy. Neither format is universally cheaper: prices, promotions, and physical availability vary by country and change over time, so compare current local listings before paying.
Metroid Dread physical vs. digital at a glance
| Decision factor | Digital edition | Physical edition | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Getting started | Download to the console from Nintendo’s digital storefront. | Insert the game card before playing. | Digital for immediate, card-free access; physical if swapping cards is not a problem. |
| Storage | Requires space for the listed 4.3 GB download, plus any later data. | Uses the card for the game itself, but updates and system data can still need storage. | Digital when you have reliable free space; physical when console storage is tight. |
| Save data | Progress is stored in the Switch system’s memory and associated with the Nintendo Account and console, not with the game card or microSD card. | Choose based on access and ownership, not on where saves are kept. | |
| Lending or reselling | A digital account purchase generally cannot be handed to another player as a separate object. | The game card can be lent or resold, subject to local rules and the condition of the copy. | Physical for flexibility outside your own Nintendo Account. |
| Price and stock | Digital pricing depends on your regional Nintendo storefront and current promotions. | Retail price and inventory depend on your region, retailer, and whether the copy is new or used. | Check both live local options rather than assuming one format always wins. |
Nintendo lists both formats for the Switch family. The right choice is therefore about how you play, how much storage you have, and whether you value transferable physical media—not about different game content.

What each edition includes
Digital edition
The digital version is purchased through the Nintendo eShop and downloaded to the console. Once installed, you can launch it without finding or inserting a card. That is useful if Metroid Dread is a game you expect to revisit frequently, if several people use one console, or if you dislike carrying cartridges when travelling.

Nintendo’s U.S. buying page does list a separate Game Voucher route, but that is a membership-linked offer rather than a requirement for buying the game directly. If you use vouchers, the membership must be active, the game must be in the eligible catalog, and the voucher has a 12-month redemption window. Catalog eligibility and terms can change, and the cited voucher information is specific to the U.S. page, so check the rules for your account’s country before purchasing.

Physical edition
The physical edition is a Nintendo Switch game card. You keep the card with your collection and insert it whenever you want to play. This can be preferable for households that share games, players who move between consoles and want a tangible copy, or anyone who may later lend the game to a friend or sell it. Those are practical advantages of physical ownership, not a promise of a particular resale price.
A card does not eliminate every download. Nintendo’s storage guidance notes that available space and additional software data matter, and a physical game may still need updates or other downloads. Check the packaging and the console’s free space instead of assuming the cartridge means zero storage use.
What happens after you buy
Digital setup
After a digital purchase, open the eShop on the Switch linked to the purchasing Nintendo Account and begin the download. The console must have enough free space for the listed 4.3 GB file and any installation data. Keep the system connected to a reliable internet connection until the download and installation finish. Once installed, the game appears on the HOME Menu and can be started without a card. If the download is interrupted, the software remains tied to the account and can be resumed when the console has space and connectivity.
Physical setup
With a card, open the package, insert the game card in the console, and select the Metroid Dread icon from the HOME Menu. The card needs to remain inserted whenever you launch the game. The first start may also prompt an update, so a physical buyer should leave free system or microSD capacity and allow time for that download. If you move the card to another compatible Switch, the software travels with the card, but the save data does not automatically travel with it.
Storage: the 4.3 GB download and microSD decisions
How much room the digital version needs
Nintendo’s official listing gives the Switch download a size of 4.3 GB. That is a product specification, not a measurement of every future installation: updates, screenshots, videos, other games, and system data also occupy space. The practical question is whether your console has enough free capacity at checkout and during installation.
Plan for more than the headline number if your system is nearly full. The download may need working room while it installs, and a later update can require additional temporary space. Do not delete unrelated software until you have checked whether it can be archived or moved according to the console’s Data Management options.
When a microSD card is needed
Nintendo Support says a microSD card may be necessary depending on how much storage is available on your system. There is no single answer for every Switch because free space differs from console to console. Before buying digitally, open the console’s Data Management screen and check available space. If it is below the download requirement, make room or install a compatible microSD card first.
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
- Select Data Management and review the free space shown for system memory and the inserted microSD card.
- Remove or archive software you no longer use, or move compatible data to a microSD card according to the console’s prompts.
- Return to the eShop listing and start the download only after the console reports sufficient space.
Physical buyers should perform the same check if the console is nearly full. The card supplies the main game data, but an update can still fail when there is not enough room for the downloaded files.

Save data: what the cartridge does—and does not—store
Your progress is not written to the Metroid Dread game card. Nintendo’s support documentation states that Switch save data is stored in system memory rather than on a game card or microSD card, and that it is associated with the Nintendo Account and console. Buying a cartridge therefore does not create a portable save file that travels with the card.
This distinction matters if you change formats or share a card. The physical object carries the game software, while the console/account environment holds your progress. Treat save management as a console and account issue, not as a property of the format you purchased.
For the same reason, buying a second copy in another format should not be treated as a way to move progress by itself. Keep using the relevant console and account, and check Nintendo’s current transfer guidance if you replace a system. The important buying point is simple: neither the 4.3 GB download nor the physical card is the place where your save file lives.

Play modes and console compatibility
Nintendo lists Metroid Dread for TV, tabletop, and handheld play. That gives both formats the same broad mode choices: the difference is how the software reaches the console, not a separate set of modes for cartridge owners.
Nintendo also lists consistent behavior on Switch 2. The page cautions that compatibility and the experience may differ on Switch Lite, so Switch Lite owners should verify the current compatibility information for their exact system before checkout. Do not infer that every accessory, display arrangement, or control experience is identical across all Switch models.
Format choice does not add a special performance mode or exclusive campaign. If your console supports the game, the physical and digital editions are ways to obtain the same Metroid Dread release. Your decision should therefore focus on access, storage, and ownership rather than expecting different in-game content.
Price, vouchers, and physical availability
Why there is no universal cheaper format
Digital and physical prices are time- and region-sensitive. The official pages establish that both editions exist but do not establish a current worldwide price winner or guaranteed inventory in every market. A digital sale can make the eShop option cheaper one week, while a discounted new or used card can change the result elsewhere. Taxes, delivery charges, and the condition of a used copy can also alter the final amount.

Avoid relying on an old sale price or assuming that a listing seen in another country applies to your account.

Using a Game Voucher
A Game Voucher is an optional digital purchasing method shown on Nintendo’s U.S. page. It requires a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership, must be redeemed within 12 months, and can be used only while the title is in the eligible catalog. Because the catalog and terms may change and regional rules differ, verify all three conditions immediately before buying vouchers. If any condition is uncertain, a direct eShop purchase or physical copy avoids making the decision depend on voucher eligibility.
Checking a physical listing
When comparing a card, confirm that the seller is offering the actual Nintendo Switch game card rather than a download code, an empty case, or an incomplete bundle. For used copies, inspect the stated condition, return policy, and seller reliability. A low headline price can stop being a bargain after shipping, taxes, or a questionable condition is included. Availability can also disappear between comparison and checkout, so treat stock as a live local detail rather than a permanent feature of the format.
Ownership flexibility and everyday convenience
When digital is more convenient
- You want to start playing without waiting for a shipment or visiting a store.
- You regularly switch among several installed games and prefer not to change cards.
- Your console has adequate free storage or you already use a microSD card.
- You are comfortable keeping the purchase within your Nintendo Account rather than transferring a physical object.
Digital access is especially simple for a single-console household. Every user who can use that console can launch an installed copy under Nintendo’s account and system rules, while the owner avoids keeping track of a small card. It is also convenient for travel when you want to take the console but not a separate game case. The trade-off is that your access depends on the account and the installed software remaining available on that system.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallWhen physical is more practical
- You want a tangible collection and do not want the game to occupy the main storage for its base installation.
- You may lend the game to someone else or sell your copy later.
- You share games among consoles and prefer carrying one card rather than downloading each copy.
- You found a legitimate local listing whose total cost is better than the current digital price.
Physical ownership also introduces responsibilities: keep the card available, protect it from loss or damage, and leave enough storage for updates. The card’s transferability is an option, not a guarantee that you will recover a specific amount of money. Lending also means you cannot play the card on your console while somebody else has it.
Which version should different players buy?
Choose digital if your priority is frictionless access
Digital is the stronger recommendation for a player who wants Metroid Dread ready from the HOME Menu, has checked free space, and does not expect to lend or resell the game. It is also sensible when local physical stock is uncertain or when a current regional sale makes the download the better total price.
Choose physical if your priority is a transferable copy
Physical is the better match for a collector, a household that shares games, or anyone who values the practical ability to lend or resell the game card. It is also attractive when console storage is constrained and a local card is competitively priced, provided you account for updates and keep the card accessible.
Choose based on storage when the other factors are equal
If convenience and ownership flexibility do not decide the issue, inspect your console’s free space. A digital purchase is straightforward when the system can accommodate the listed download and future data. If you cannot free that space, a card may be easier, but it still does not make update storage irrelevant.
Recommended Free Tools
For a gift or shared household
Physical is usually simpler when the recipient should receive an object that can be wrapped, handed over, or used on a household’s compatible consoles. Digital is better when the purchase should be available immediately on the recipient’s own account and console, but verify that you are buying through the correct regional storefront and account. In either case, explain that progress is stored on the console and account, not on the card or microSD card.

A five-minute buying checklist
- Confirm your region. Open the Nintendo storefront or local retailer serving the country attached to your account. Prices, stock, and voucher rules are market-specific.
- Check storage. Review free system and microSD capacity in System Settings > Data Management. Decide whether preparing a microSD card is necessary before a digital download.
- Compare final prices. Include taxes and delivery for physical listings, and compare them with the current eShop total. Do not use an expired promotion as your benchmark.
- Decide whether the copy must be transferable. If lending or resale matters, select physical. If keeping the game tied to your Nintendo Account is acceptable, digital remains an option.
- Verify compatibility. Check the current Nintendo information for your model, especially if you use Switch Lite. Nintendo lists TV, tabletop, and handheld modes and identifies Switch 2 behavior, but model experiences can differ.
- If using a voucher, verify the conditions. Confirm paid Nintendo Switch Online membership, the 12-month redemption deadline, and current catalog eligibility in your region before purchasing the voucher.
- Keep expectations about saves accurate. Whichever format you buy, progress belongs to the console/account environment, not to a card or microSD card.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- “The cartridge contains my save.” It does not. Save data is stored in system memory and associated with the account and console.
- “Physical means no downloads.” Updates and other data can still require free storage. Leave room even when the base game is on a card.
- “Digital requires Nintendo Switch Online.” A direct eShop purchase does not carry that requirement. The membership caveat applies to the cited Game Voucher route.
- “The cheapest format is the same everywhere.” Prices and stock vary by country and date. Compare current local totals.
- “Every Switch model behaves identically.” Nintendo lists support across the Switch family, including Switch 2 behavior, while warning that Switch Lite compatibility or experience may differ.
- “A voucher is automatically valid.” Eligibility, membership status, the redemption window, and the catalog all need checking at the time of purchase.
- “A used card is automatically a bargain.” Condition, seller reliability, shipping, and return terms affect the real value. Confirm that the listing includes the game card you need.
Do you need the Samus and E.M.M.I. amiibo?
No. Nintendo describes the Samus and E.M.M.I. amiibo as optional accessories that provide bonus health and missile benefits. They are not required to play Metroid Dread in either physical or digital format, so they should not influence the format decision unless you specifically want those extras. Buying the game card does not include a requirement to own the amiibo, and downloading the game does not remove access to the game’s normal play modes.
