How to check your console before buying
Confirm the model group rather than relying on a seller’s title, a photograph, or the word “Slim” or “Pro” alone.
- Find the full model number. Check the label on the console or its original packaging. Sony’s setup material uses the CFI model-group number as the compatibility reference.
- Identify the group prefix. CFI-2000 corresponds to the Slim model group; CFI-7000 corresponds to PS5 Pro.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistake: reading “Slim drive” as a separate, Pro-incompatible product
The official accessory spans the CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 groups. “Slim drive” is often shorthand for the drive used with a Slim console, not evidence that a different accessory standard exists.
Mistake: assuming a matching cover proves a matching drive

- Verify that the item is Sony’s removable drive, not a cover or internal replacement mechanism.
- Confirm that the console is connected to the internet, since first-time pairing requires connectivity.
- Restart the setup using Sony’s instructions for the exact model group.
The accessory fits but a cover does not
That result is consistent with Sony’s compatibility table: the removable drive is supported on Pro, while CFI-2000 Slim covers are not. Do not force a cover or modify the chassis to make it fit.
A seller claims a loose Slim drive works in Pro
Ask whether the seller means the official attachable accessory or an internal drive removed from a console. Only the former is covered by Sony’s published CFI-2000/7000 compatibility statement.
Your console has another model number
Stop before purchase and locate Sony’s guidance for that exact model. The cited statement is limited to CFI-2000/7000 groups, so it should not be broadened to unlisted consoles.

What this compatibility evidence does—and does not—tell you
It establishes a supported accessory relationship between Sony’s removable disc drive and the CFI-2000 Slim and CFI-7000 Pro model groups. It also establishes that CFI-2000 Slim covers are not compatible with PS5 Pro.
