There is an important distinction behind the “Venom game” wording: the official material cited here places Venom in Spider-Man 2. It does not announce a separate, standalone Venom game. The three-game order is therefore the order for the existing Insomniac Spider-Man story, not a confirmed lead-in to an announced Venom title.

Do you need to play the earlier Spider-Man games first?
No. You can play Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 as your first game in the series. PlayStation’s FAQ asks whether players can jump in anywhere and answers that the sequel can be enjoyed “without prior story or character knowledge,” while recommending the previous titles for the fullest experience of its emerging narrative. That makes the earlier games recommended context, not prerequisites.
Starting with the sequel is sensible if you only have access to that game, want to play on its available hardware, or simply prefer to begin with the newest entry. You will not be required to complete an earlier campaign before the sequel will let you play. The trade-off is narrative familiarity: the sequel continues a story that PlayStation describes as spanning three games.

If your question is specifically whether you must finish the trilogy before any future Venom-focused release, the official information does not establish such a requirement. No standalone Venom game announcement appears in the official pages cited for this guide, so there is no confirmed prerequisite list for one.
The recommended story order
PlayStation’s own series guide gives this sequence:
- Marvel’s Spider-Man
- Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
This is chronological story order rather than release-date trivia. PlayStation places Miles Morales approximately one year after the first game and Spider-Man 2 roughly nine months after Miles Morales. Those intervals describe the fictional timeline; they are not claims about how far apart the products were published.

1. Marvel’s Spider-Man
The first game establishes the original chapter of the series’ story and the characters whose situations continue into the later entries. If you want the broadest context, begin here rather than treating the sequel as an isolated reboot.
When choosing an edition, PlayStation identifies a PS4 Game of the Year Edition and a PS5 Remastered version that include The City That Never Sleeps expansion. The expansion is not a requirement for understanding the basic three-game order, but an edition that includes it can give a returning player more of the first game’s material in one purchase. Check the listing for your region before buying, because editions and stock can change.

2. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
Miles Morales is the middle story entry, not an unrelated side story that should automatically be skipped. PlayStation calls it the second entry in the sequence and lists it for PS4 and PS5. Playing it after the first game supplies the immediate bridge into the situation presented by Spider-Man 2.
Insomniac’s support information identifies a PS5 Ultimate Edition and notes that physical preorder editions were offered in the United States and Canada. That information describes a particular edition and preorder availability, not a promise that the same package is currently in stock or sold in every country.

Spider-Man 2 is the third game in the recommended order and the entry in which Venom appears as a villain. Sony Interactive Entertainment announced its worldwide launch for October 20, 2023 on PlayStation 5. Marvel’s official game listing also identifies PS5 and PC availability.
The sequel is a single-player continuation, so you can approach it as a complete playthrough even if you have not seen the earlier events. Playing the first two games first mainly changes how much history and character development you bring to that playthrough.
What the official material says about Venom
Venom is part of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, not evidence by itself of a separate game. Insomniac’s official description identifies Venom as a villain in the sequel, and PlayStation’s product materials discuss Venom in the context of that PS5 game.

The official pages consulted for this article do not announce a standalone Venom title. That is the precise conclusion the available information supports: there is no official announcement to use as a release, platform, or prerequisite reference here. It is not proof that no future project could ever be made. Rumors, leaks, or speculation should not be presented as a confirmed game or as a reason to reorder the existing trilogy.

If an independently announced Venom game appears later, its developer and publisher would need to state how it connects and whether earlier games matter.
Can you begin with Spider-Man 2 and still follow it?
Yes. PlayStation explicitly says you can enjoy the sequel without prior story or character knowledge. That is the clearest answer for someone deciding whether to buy or play it now.
Starting there works best when your priority is reaching the newest entry quickly. You can then decide whether to go back to the earlier campaigns for additional context. The reverse approach—playing the trilogy in order—takes longer but lets each game introduce the next chapter in the sequence PlayStation recommends.
Do not confuse “recommended” with “mandatory.” Nothing in the official FAQ says that the first game or Miles Morales must be installed, completed, or owned to unlock Spider-Man 2. The recommendation is about narrative experience, not a technical gate.

Your best route depends on whether you value completeness, speed, or access to a particular platform.

The two-game route is a practical compromise, not PlayStation’s stated full order. If you choose it, remember that Miles Morales is positioned after the first game; it does not replace the first chapter’s material.

Do you need special editions or accessories?
No. A standard copy of each game is enough to follow the story. A themed accessory does not alter the order or add required narrative content.

PlayStation has described optional Spider-Man 2 merchandise including a themed DualSense controller, console covers, and a Collector’s Edition containing a game voucher, SteelBook case, and 19-inch statue. The same announcement notes limited regional availability and supply. These products are optional collectibles; they are not prerequisites for playing the trilogy and should not be assumed to be in stock.
Common mistakes when planning the play order
Assuming Venom has a confirmed standalone game
The existence of Venom in Spider-Man 2 does not constitute an announcement for a separate Venom game. Keep the established sequel as the Venom-related entry unless an official publisher or developer announcement says otherwise.
Treating Miles Morales as optional filler
PlayStation places Miles Morales between the first game and Spider-Man 2. You may skip it because the sequel is playable without prior knowledge, but skipping it means skipping the middle chapter of the recommended sequence.

The approximately one-year and nine-month intervals supplied by PlayStation refer to events inside the fiction. They do not tell you which product was released first or how long a game takes to complete.
Buying an edition based on an old listing
Names such as Game of the Year, Remastered, Ultimate, Collector’s, and Digital Deluxe identify different contents or formats. Confirm the platform, included expansion, region, and current availability on the live listing. Do not assume a preorder package or physical edition remains available.
Expecting the play order to require a particular controller
The games can be played with the normal supported hardware for their platform. The themed accessories described by PlayStation are commemorative options, not technical requirements.
A simple decision guide
- Want maximum story context? Play Marvel’s Spider-Man, then Miles Morales, then Spider-Man 2.
- Only interested in the Venom appearance? Go directly to Spider-Man 2; Venom is a villain in that game, and prior knowledge is not required according to PlayStation.
- Have a PS4? The first game and Miles Morales have PS4 options listed by PlayStation, while Spider-Man 2 launched on PS5. Check the current platform listing for any later PC availability or edition changes.
- Want the first game’s additional content? Look for the PS4 Game of the Year Edition or PS5 Remastered version that PlayStation says includes The City That Never Sleeps.
- Considering a future Venom project? Do not plan around an unannounced title. Follow official announcements for its release, platforms, and continuity details.
