Sony’s premium console improves graphics with a larger GPU, faster memory, stronger ray tracing, and PSSR upscaling, but it is digital-only and its U.S. price is now much higher than the original preorder price.
PS5 Pro launched worldwide on November 7, 2024. Sony’s premium PlayStation 5 costs considerably more than the original launch price today: its U.S. launch MSRP was $699.99, while Sony’s recommended retail price became $899.99 on April 2, 2026. The current U.S. PlayStation Direct listing reviewed for this guide displayed $899.00.

The console is digital-only out of the box and does not include a disc drive or vertical stand. Its appeal is improved graphics rather than a new game library: a larger GPU, faster memory, stronger ray tracing, and Sony’s AI-based PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) can help supported games deliver sharper images and higher or steadier frame rates.

PS5 Pro release date and preorder timeline
Sony Interactive Entertainment announced PS5 Pro on September 10, 2024. The company announced a worldwide release date of November 7, 2024, and the console launched on that date through PlayStation Direct and participating retailers.
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| September 10, 2024 | Sony announced PS5 Pro and its launch price. |
| September 26, 2024 | Preorders opened through PlayStation Direct and participating retailers in territories where PlayStation Direct was available. |
| October 10, 2024 | Preorders opened at other participating retailers. |
| November 7, 2024 | PS5 Pro launched worldwide. |
| April 2, 2026 | Sony’s global price increases took effect, including the higher U.S. PS5 Pro recommended retail price. |
Because the preorder window and launch have passed, references to the September and October 2024 preorder dates are historical. Availability and retailer pricing can still vary by country and over time.

PS5 Pro price: launch MSRP versus current price
| Price reference | U.S. price | Important context |
|---|---|---|
| Launch MSRP, announced September 10, 2024 | $699.99 | Disc-less console; disc drive and vertical stand sold separately. |
| Sony recommended retail price from April 2, 2026 | $899.99 | This is the later U.S. recommended retail price, not the original preorder price. |
| PlayStation Direct listing observed during this research | $899.00 | The retailer-page price was $0.99 below Sony’s published $899.99 recommended retail price. |
Sony’s announced launch prices were £699.99 in the U.K., €799.99 in Europe, and ¥119,980 in Japan. Sony stated that the European and Japanese prices included tax. Local prices, taxes, promotions, and stock can differ.
If you are comparing current listings, look specifically at the PS5 Pro console price and check whether a retailer is bundling a disc drive or stand. The standard package is the 2TB digital console, not a disc-equipped model.
What comes in the PS5 Pro box?
The current U.S. PlayStation Direct product page lists these included items:
- PS5 Pro console
- DualSense wireless controller
- 2TB SSD
- Two horizontal support feet
- HDMI cable
- AC power cord
- User manual
- Astro’s Playroom pre-installed
It does not include a disc drive or vertical stand. The console is therefore ready for digital games and downloads, but physical-game owners need to budget for the optional PS5 Pro console configuration plus a separate drive if they need one.

What is better about PS5 Pro?
PS5 Pro is not a replacement generation with exclusive games. It is a more powerful version of the PS5 designed to reduce the compromise between visual quality and frame rate in games that support its enhancements.
1. A larger, faster graphics system
Sony says the PS5 Pro has 67% more compute units than the then-current PS5 and 28% faster memory. Sony’s comparison says this enables up to 45% faster rendering for gameplay.
Those are Sony’s platform-level claims, not a guarantee that every game runs 45% faster. The visible result depends on the game, its graphics settings, its patch, the display, and whether the developer has implemented a PS5 Pro mode.
2. More capable ray tracing
Sony says PS5 Pro can cast ray-tracing effects at twice the speed of the current PS5, and in some cases at three times the speed. That extra graphics capacity can be used for more detailed reflections, lighting, shadows, and other effects in compatible games.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Ray tracing is not automatically improved to the same degree in every title. Developers decide how to use the hardware, and some games may prioritize resolution or frame rate instead.
3. PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR)
PSSR is Sony’s machine-learning-based upscaling technology. It reconstructs a higher-detail image from a lower internal rendering resolution, with the goal of producing a sharper result without requiring the console to render every frame natively at the final output resolution.
In practical terms, PSSR is part of Sony’s attempt to make a game’s high-frame-rate mode look closer to its high-fidelity mode. Image quality still varies by implementation, and PSSR is not a universal promise that every game will receive the same treatment.

Performance mode and Fidelity mode in one experience
The central PS5 Pro proposition is combining features traditionally associated with separate console modes: the detail, lighting, and ray tracing of a Fidelity-style presentation with the smoother response of a Performance-style presentation.
That does not mean every game automatically runs at maximum resolution, maximum ray tracing, and 120 frames per second. Game developers choose the available modes. Some titles receive a dedicated PS5 Pro patch; others may use broader system features such as Game Boost; and unsupported games may see little or no meaningful visual change.
Resolution, 120Hz, VRR, and 8K support
PS5 Pro supports high-frame-rate gameplay up to 120fps with 4K output and ray tracing when the game, display, and selected settings support those features. It also supports VRR and lists 8K gaming support. Sony’s current product page emphasizes 4K-ready gaming and high-frame-rate gameplay.
To benefit from a 120Hz or VRR mode, you need a compatible television or monitor and the appropriate connection and settings. The console includes an HDMI cable, so buying another cable is not normally required. A replacement or longer HDMI cable is a setup accessory rather than an essential PS5 Pro upgrade.
Likewise, PS5 Pro does not make a 4K/120Hz display mandatory. A regular 4K television can still show the console’s improvements, while a high-refresh display makes smoother supported modes easier to appreciate. A 4K 120Hz TV or gaming monitor is best considered an optional display upgrade, not part of the console’s minimum requirements.

Sony said more than 50 PS5 Pro-enhanced games were available at launch. Launch examples included:
- Alan Wake 2
- Assassin’s Creed Mirage
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
- Gran Turismo 7
- Hogwarts Legacy
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- The Last of Us Part II Remastered
Sony’s launch enhanced-games list is a useful reference, but the badge does not mean every title receives identical benefits. Enhancements can involve resolution, ray tracing, frame rate, image quality, loading behavior, or a developer-specific graphics mode.
Game Boost and PS4 compatibility
PS5 Pro includes Game Boost support for more than 8,500 backward-compatible PS4 games, according to Sony’s announcement materials. Game Boost may stabilize or improve performance in supported PS4 and PS5 games, and selected PS4 games can also receive improved image quality.
Do not interpret that as a guarantee that all 8,500-plus games receive a major PS5 Pro patch. Game Boost and enhanced-game support are different things, and the result is title-dependent.

Also, the current PlayStation Direct disclosure says that a small number of PS4 games are not compatible with PS5 Pro. The safer description is that PS5 Pro supports the overwhelming majority of PS4 games, not every PS4 title without exception.
Does PS5 Pro have a disc drive?
No. PS5 Pro is an all-digital console out of the box. Sony sells the Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive for PS5 separately. The optional drive can play supported physical PS5 and PS4 game discs and 4K Blu-ray and DVD discs.
An internet connection is required to pair the disc drive with PS5 Pro during setup. If you own a substantial physical library or use the console as a Blu-ray player, include the cost and availability of the Disc Drive for PS5 in the total purchase price. If you buy only digital games, the missing drive may not matter.
Storage and expansion
The console has a 2TB SSD, giving PS5 Pro more built-in storage than the base storage configuration of the original PS5 generation. Large modern games can still consume that space quickly, especially if you keep several download-heavy titles installed.
Rank #3
The hardware documentation identifies an M.2 SSD expansion connector. Anyone shopping for a PS5-compatible M.2 SSD should verify the drive’s current PS5 compatibility requirements, physical dimensions, capacity, and heatsink specifications before buying. The existence of the connector alone is not approval for every NVMe drive or every third-party model.

PS5 Pro works with currently available PS5 accessories, including:
- PlayStation VR2
- PlayStation Portal
- DualSense Edge
- Access controller
- Pulse Elite
- Pulse Explore
The console includes two horizontal support feet. A vertical stand is sold separately, so owners who want to position the system upright should treat the stand as an additional cost. Sony also includes an HDMI cable; a replacement cable is relevant only for damage, unusual cable length, or a particular installation—not as a required upgrade.
Who should buy PS5 Pro?
PS5 Pro makes the strongest case for a particular type of player:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- You already own, or plan to buy, a 4K or high-refresh-rate display.
- You care about ray-traced lighting, reflections, and sharper image reconstruction.
- You play several titles with meaningful PS5 Pro enhancements.
- You want smoother high-fidelity presentation and are willing to pay a premium for it.
- You are comfortable buying games digitally or adding the separate disc drive.
Who should keep a standard PS5 instead?
The value is less direct if you need a built-in disc drive, play mostly games without substantial PS5 Pro enhancements, use a basic 60Hz display, or are primarily looking for access to the PS5 library rather than the best console image quality.
At the 2026 U.S. recommended price of $899.99, the console is a premium purchase before adding a disc drive, vertical stand, larger display, or storage expansion. That does not make it a poor product; it means the benefit depends heavily on your display, games, and priorities. This is a buying inference from Sony’s title-specific enhancement qualifications and the console’s disc-less configuration, not a claim based on independent performance testing.
PS5 Pro buying checklist
- Check the current price in your country. Separate the original $699.99 launch MSRP from the later U.S. $899.99 recommended price and retailer-specific listings.
- Confirm whether you need discs. Add the separately sold PS5 Disc Drive if you own physical PS4 or PS5 games or want Blu-ray playback.
- Check your display. A 4K screen is useful; 120Hz and VRR support are needed for the relevant high-refresh features.
- Review your games. Look for PS5 Pro-enhanced support rather than assuming every PS5 game receives the same upgrade.
- Budget for positioning and storage only if needed. The vertical stand is separate, while the 2TB SSD can be expanded through the M.2 connector.
- Remember that the HDMI cable is included. Buy a replacement or longer cable only for a specific installation need.
PS5 Pro: the bottom line
PS5 Pro is a premium, digital-only PS5 launched on November 7, 2024. Its hardware improvements—67% more compute units, 28% faster memory, substantially faster ray tracing, and PSSR upscaling—are designed to make supported games look sharper and run more smoothly without forcing players to choose as severely between Fidelity and Performance modes.
The trade-offs are equally clear: the launch price was already high at $699.99, Sony’s U.S. recommended retail price later rose to $899.99, and the package excludes the disc drive and vertical stand. It is most compelling for players with a good 4K or high-refresh display and a library of enhanced games. For everyone else, a standard PS5 may deliver the more sensible value.
