Its faster GPU, improved ray tracing and PSSR image reconstruction can deliver sharper images and better frame-rate compromises in supported games. The difference is easiest to see on a large 4K/120Hz VRR display from a relatively close seating position.
Everyone else should be more cautious. The Pro does not change the generation, replace the standard PS5’s game library or solve every CPU-limited game. Its price is also harder to justify if you need a separate disc drive.

What the PS5 Pro gets right
The phrase “subtle, but they’re there” is an accurate summary of the PS5 Pro. This is a genuine mid-generation hardware upgrade, not a new generation. In the right game, it can preserve much of a fidelity mode’s image quality while targeting the smoother performance associated with a 60fps mode. In other games, the improvement is limited, difficult to see from a sofa or dependent on a patch that may not exist.

Sony’s US PlayStation Direct console page displayed the Pro at $899 when observed in August 2026, so that current listing should not be confused with the original launch price. #1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
At that level, the Pro is a luxury console for players who care about image quality, ray tracing and consistent performance. The standard PS5 remains the better value for many buyers.
What is different from a standard PS5?
The central upgrade is graphics performance. Review testing from The Verge described the GPU as approximately 62% faster than the original PS5, although raw throughput does not translate into an identical frame-rate gain in every game.
- More GPU headroom: Developers have more rendering power for higher internal resolutions, detail and effects.
- Improved ray tracing: Supported games can use more convincing reflections, shadows and lighting effects, though ray tracing can still come with a 30fps target.
- PSSR: Sony’s PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution reconstructs a sharper output from a lower internal render resolution. It is not a guarantee of native 4K, and results vary by implementation.
- More memory: The hardware includes 16GB of GDDR6 plus 2GB of DDR5 system memory.
- 2TB SSD: That is double the capacity commonly associated with the original PS5, although usable space is lower because some storage is reserved for system functions.
- Wi-Fi 7: The Pro supports the newer wireless standard where the rest of the network supports it.
- Game Boost: Selected PS5 and PS4 games can receive smoother or faster performance without a dedicated Pro patch.
Sony’s hardware documentation lists an AMD Zen 2 eight-core/16-thread CPU, a 16.7-teraflop AMD Radeon RDNA-based graphics engine, 2TB storage and an approximate mass of 3.1kg. Dimensions are approximately 388 × 89 × 216mm. See the official hardware guide for the specification details.
What has not changed is just as important. The Pro uses the same broad Zen 2 CPU family, the same DualSense controller, the same user interface and PlayStation network services, and the same generation of games. A CPU-bound game will not automatically become a 60fps game simply because the console has a much faster GPU. Loading is also not a major reason to upgrade: the Pro retains a high-speed SSD architecture, but Sony does not promise a generational reduction in loading times.
How noticeable is the image-quality improvement?
The answer depends on your television, seating distance and eyesight as much as on the console.
| Setup | Likely experience |
|---|---|
| 1080p TV | Usually poor value; many of the Pro’s benefits will be difficult to see. |
| Small 4K TV viewed from far away | The difference may be subtle outside a side-by-side comparison. |
| 55-inch 4K display with close seating | Potentially noticeable, especially in supported games. |
| 65-inch-or-larger 4K OLED or QLED with 120Hz and VRR | The strongest living-room case for the Pro. |
| 4K gaming monitor at desk distance | A particularly favorable setup because you sit close to fine detail. |
In its review testing, The Verge found the difference difficult to perceive at roughly 12 feet from a TV, barely discernible at 10 feet and clearly visible at approximately eight feet from a 65-inch display. Those are reviewer test conditions, not universal thresholds, but they illustrate why the same console can look transformational to one player and nearly identical to another.
The practical gains include cleaner foliage, steadier fine geometry, less shimmering and softer detail in some performance modes, and more convincing reflections or shadows in selected ray-traced modes. HDR quality, 120Hz support and VRR can also affect how much improvement you perceive. A good VRR display may make the standard PS5 feel smooth enough that the Pro’s advantage becomes less dramatic.
PSSR explained
PSSR, or PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, is an image-reconstruction technique. A supported game can render internally at a lower resolution and use the Pro’s hardware and software to reconstruct a sharper output. Sony describes some supported titles as using a 1440p render target upscaled to 4K through PSSR, and its PS5 Pro feature page documents an “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” setting for supported games.
This matters because rendering every pixel natively at a high resolution is expensive. PSSR can give developers room to use higher-quality assets, ray tracing or a higher frame-rate target without accepting the full softness of a conventional performance mode.
It is not magic and it is not equivalent to native 4K. Reconstruction quality is title-dependent. Shimmering, unstable detail, softness and other artifacts can still appear, particularly in foliage, fine geometry or moving scenes. PSSR is best understood as a tool developers can use well or poorly, not as a universal image-quality switch.
Does the Pro eliminate the fidelity-versus-performance choice?
Often, but not universally.
The best Pro modes combine higher-quality assets, a higher internal resolution, improved ray tracing, a 60fps target and PSSR reconstruction. These are the moments when the hardware feels like it is solving a real console problem: choosing between a sharp 30fps fidelity mode and a softer 60fps performance mode.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The Verge’s testing found that the “best of both worlds” description held up in several games, but not all of them. Some enhanced ray-tracing modes still target 30fps. CPU-limited games can remain limited. A developer’s Pro mode may still retain pop-in, texture-streaming problems or animation artifacts. And games without meaningful support may look almost unchanged.
Games that show the difference
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is one of the most persuasive examples. Its PS5 Pro Versatility mode offered a clearer image without the standard version’s same level of softness or choppiness, making the upgrade more apparent than a simple specification comparison suggests.

- Vertical Stand sold seperately
The Last of Us Part I and The Last of Us Part II Remastered can show sharper detail and improved image quality. Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered benefits in fine facial detail, while Demon’s Souls, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart demonstrate the value of combining image quality with smoother performance. Gran Turismo 7, Horizon Forbidden West, F1 24, Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Dragon’s Dogma 2 are other examples of games that have received Pro-focused treatment.
Alan Wake 2 is an instructive case rather than an unconditional recommendation: its optional ray-traced reflections show what the extra GPU can do, but the mode comes with a lower frame-rate target. The visual feature is real; the trade-off is real too.

That was a launch-era list, not a fixed current total. Support has expanded and can continue to change, so check the games you actually play rather than assuming every PS5 title is enhanced.
What happens with unpatched games?
There are three different situations:
- PS5 Pro Enhanced games: These have developer-specific improvements and usually offer the largest gains.
- Unpatched games with unlocked frame rates: Game Boost may allow higher or more stable performance if the title has headroom.
- Older PS4 games: The PS4 image-enhancement option and Game Boost can provide modest improvements, but they do not turn an old game into a remaster.
Sony says the Pro can play more than 8,500 PS4 games, while warning that a small number are not compatible. The Verge observed slight improvements in selected PS4 titles after enabling image enhancement, but these should be treated as subtle and not guaranteed. The same principle applies to PS5 games without a patch: no patch, no miracle.

The 2TB SSD is genuinely convenient. Modern games are large, and extra capacity reduces the need to delete and reinstall them. It is not, however, a unique reason for every upgrade. Standard PS5 models can also use an M.2 SSD expansion, and the Pro includes an M.2 expansion connector. Storage is a benefit separate from the graphics upgrade.
The console weighs approximately 3.1kg and has a slimmer profile than the original launch PS5. Sony includes horizontal feet. Claims about noise or cooling should be treated as observations from particular review units and environments rather than universal guarantees.

The Pro is compatible with existing PS5 accessories, including PSVR2, PlayStation Portal, DualSense Edge, the Access controller, Pulse Elite and Pulse Explore. Its extra GPU headroom can help demanding PSVR2 games, but the improvement depends on title-specific patches and rendering limits. It is not a guaranteed upgrade for every VR experience.
The hidden cost: there is no disc drive
The US package includes the PS5 Pro, one DualSense controller, the 2TB SSD, horizontal feet, HDMI and power cables, and Astro’s Playroom. It does not include a disc drive or vertical stand. Sony lists both as separate purchases on the official product page.
If you own physical PS5 or PS4 games, or use the console as a 4K Blu-ray player, add the official disc drive to the budget. Sony says the drive requires an internet connection to pair with the console during setup. The exact drive price should be checked at purchase; a historical review-period price is not a reliable 2026 price.
A vertical stand is only necessary if you want upright placement. The included horizontal feet are enough for horizontal positioning. Likewise, an additional SSD is optional rather than an automatic purchase, and PlayStation Plus is only an ongoing cost for online features that require it.

PS5 Pro versus a standard PS5
| Priority | Better choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Highest image quality and ray tracing | PS5 Pro | More GPU headroom and Pro-specific modes. |
| Best value | Standard PS5 | Same generation and game library for less money. |
| Physical games at the lowest total cost | PS5 Disc Edition | The Pro requires a separate disc drive. |
| Digital-only gaming on a budget | PS5 Digital Edition | Lower entry price if Pro visuals are not important. |
| Large 4K/120Hz VRR display | PS5 Pro | The display can reveal its improvements. |
| 1080p television or distant seating | Standard PS5 | Much of the Pro’s benefit may disappear at normal viewing distance. |
Who should buy the PS5 Pro?
Buy it if you are:
- An existing PS5 owner with a large 4K/120Hz HDR display and VRR.
- Highly sensitive to 30fps modes, shimmering or soft performance modes.
- Regularly playing games with PS5 Pro Enhanced support.
- Looking for better console ray tracing without moving to a gaming PC.
- A first-time PlayStation buyer who accepts the premium and does not need an included disc drive.
- Interested in PSVR2 titles where developers have used the additional rendering headroom.
Keep or buy a standard PS5 if you are:
- Using a 1080p display or sitting far from a smaller 4K television.
- Happy with your favorite games’ existing 60fps modes.
- Mostly playing games without Pro patches.
- Building a physical library and do not want to add the cost and setup of a disc drive.
- Seeking the strongest price-to-performance ratio.
- Mostly playing CPU-heavy simulations or games whose main bottleneck is not graphics.
PS5 Pro or gaming PC?
The relevant comparison is not the Pro against every possible PC. It is whether you want a premium, plug-and-play console or a more flexible computer.
The Pro offers a predictable hardware target, a simple interface, fast resume, console exclusives, DualSense features and no driver or graphics-setting management. A gaming PC can offer higher peak performance, adjustable settings, mods, a broader software library and upgradeability, but usually at a higher budget and with more setup and troubleshooting. Review coverage found that a mid-range PC could exceed the Pro in some graphical areas, while demanding more configuration.
Quick Recap
Check these six things before upgrading
- Look up Pro support for the games you actually play.
- Confirm that your display supports 4K, 120Hz and VRR if you want the strongest case.
- Measure your real viewing distance, not just the television’s diagonal size.
- Decide whether you need physical discs and include the drive in the total.
- Compare the current price, not the $699.99 launch MSRP.
- Ask whether your standard PS5 already delivers a stable 60fps mode in your favorite games.
