Microsoft’s historical documentation associates xactsrv.dll with the Server Service and describes it as supporting transaction and downlevel API functionality. It is therefore not normally a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET, graphics-driver or game-middleware file.

First identify where the error occurs

Before repairing anything, note exactly when the message appears.

• During Windows startup, shutdown or networking: suspect Windows system-file corruption, deletion or a damaged component store.
• When opening network shares: check Windows repair status and the Server Service.
• Only when launching one old program: the application may have an incompatible or damaged installation.
• After antivirus activity: check whether Windows Security quarantined the file.
• After an update, driver installation or disk problem: consider System Restore, storage diagnostics or a Windows repair installation.
• With “specified module could not be found”: a dependency of xactsrv.dll may be missing. The named file is not necessarily the only problem.

First, check whether the file exists. Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:

A successful listing only proves that a file with that name exists. It does not prove that the file is authentic, undamaged or compatible with the application.

Fix 1: Update Windows, then run DISM and SFC

This is the safest first repair when the error appears outside one isolated application.

Microsoft recommends checking for updates and restarting before using the repair commands. On Windows 11:

1. Open Start.
2. Select Settings.
3. Select Windows Update.
4. Select Check for updates.
5. Install available updates.
6. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.

On Windows 10:

1. Open Start.
2. Select Settings.
3. Select Update & Security.
4. Select Windows Update.
5. Select Check for updates.
6. Install updates and restart.

After restarting, open an elevated Command Prompt:

1. Open Start.
2. Type Command Prompt.
3. Right-click Command Prompt.
4. Select Run as administrator.
5. Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.

Run DISM first:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Wait for it to finish. The process may appear to pause at a percentage for several minutes. Do not close the window while it is running.

Then run System File Checker:

sfc /scannow

Restart Windows after SFC completes and test the program again.

How to interpret the result

• “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations”: SFC found no damaged protected system files. If one old application still fails, repair that application.
• “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them”: restart and test again.
• “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them”: run DISM again, restart, and run SFC once more. If it still fails, continue to the repair-installation section.
• DISM reports that source files could not be found: use a matching Windows installation source or move to an in-place repair. Do not substitute a random internet DLL.

The manual DISM and SFC process is safe but can leave you hunting through logs and repeating commands without knowing what changed. Fix 2: Repair the application that reports the error

If Windows works normally and only one legacy application displays the message, do not assume the Windows installation is broken. The program may contain an incompatible loader, damaged files or a missing dependency.

For a Microsoft Store application

1. Open Start.
2. Select Settings.
3. Select Apps.
4. Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
5. Find the affected application.
6. Select the three-dot menu, or select the application and choose Advanced options.
7. Select Repair.
8. Launch the program again.

If Repair does not help, return to the same screen and select Reset, if available. Reset can remove application data and settings, so use it only after checking that the data is backed up.

For a traditional desktop application

Use the application’s original installer or its supported maintenance option:

1. Open Start.
2. Type Control Panel.
3. Open Control Panel.
4. Select Programs.
5. Select Programs and Features.
6. Select the affected program.
7. Choose Change, Repair or Uninstall, depending on what the installer provides.
8. Restart Windows if requested.
9. Reinstall from the original installer or the publisher’s official source if repair is unavailable.

Do not copy a downloaded xactsrv.dll into the program folder. A program that reports this filename may actually be missing another dependency, and a copied file can create a version or architecture mismatch.

For a game installed through a launcher, use that launcher’s Verify, Repair or Verify integrity function if available. The exact menu depends on the launcher. If verification does not correct the error, reinstall the game or application using its official installer.

2. Type services.msc.
3. Press Enter.

5. Review its status and startup configuration.
6. Do not change the setting casually on a managed computer or a computer that does not need file sharing.
7. If the service is stopped and your normal Windows configuration requires it, right-click it and select Start.
8. Test the network operation again.

A service setting will not restore a missing or corrupt DLL. If the service refuses to start, return to DISM and SFC, then check Event Viewer for the related error.

Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows may require a 32-bit system component. A native 64-bit application may require the 64-bit copy. Windows normally handles this through WOW64 redirection, so manually moving files between folders is unsafe.

Use these paths only to inspect the installation:

Do not swap the files between System32 and SysWOW64. Do not place a 64-bit DLL beside a 32-bit executable or the reverse.

Messages such as “not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error” can indicate:

• Wrong architecture
• Wrong Windows build
• Damaged file
• Missing dependency
• An application that was never compatible with the current Windows version

If the error belongs to an old application, check whether its publisher provides a current release or compatibility guidance. Running an obsolete application on Windows 10 or Windows 11 may require an application-specific fix rather than a replacement system DLL.

Fix 6: Repair or update related drivers only when evidence points there

1. Right-click Start.
2. Select Device Manager.
3. Expand the relevant category, such as Network adapters, Storage controllers or Display adapters.
4. Right-click the affected device.
5. Select Properties.
6. Open the Driver tab.
7. Review the provider, date and version.
8. Use Update Driver only with a driver from Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer.
9. Restart Windows and test again.

Do not uninstall a working driver merely because an unrelated program reports xactsrv.dll.

On supported Windows 11 installations, Windows Update may offer a repair reinstall that keeps apps, files and settings.

Fix 9: Escalate severe corruption or disk problems

If repair commands repeatedly fail, investigate the storage device and Windows installation.

Do not download a standalone DLL

Random DLL download sites pages can provide:

• The wrong Windows build
• The wrong architecture
• A mismatched language or export set
• A modified or malicious file
