What does a PS5 Pro–class gaming PC cost?
Tom’s Guide’s 2026 estimate puts a comparable new gaming PC at about $1,000–$1,500 or more. Its example core components total $963–$1,200, before adding a case, power supply, operating system, or peripherals. The example GPUs are an RX 9060 XT 16GB or RTX 5060 Ti 16GB. This is an editorial estimate, not a retailer quote or controlled performance test; actual totals vary with parts, region, tax, and availability. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 estimate provides the cost context.

PC Gamer reported that the PS5 Pro’s US price would be $900, with retailer rollout from April 2, 2026. Check current local prices before buying: the reported figure is US-specific and does not establish what the console costs in other markets. PC Gamer’s March 2026 report covers the change.
For context, Sony’s November 2024 US launch MSRP was $699.99. That is a historical launch price, not the current US figure reported in 2026. Sony also says the Pro includes a 2TB SSD and a DualSense wireless controller. Sony’s launch announcement lists the original price and included hardware.
#1 Best Overall

Why “equivalent” does not mean an exact GPU match
Sony’s PS5 Pro announcement describes improvements over the base PS5: 67% more compute units, 28% faster memory, and rendering that can be up to 45% faster. Sony also says ray tracing can run at double or, in some cases, triple the base console’s speed. These are Sony’s claims against the base PS5, not a universal PC benchmark. The company says enhanced features are available only in select games and vary by title. Sony’s announcement also describes its PSSR machine-learning upscaling.
PC Gamer names the RX 7700 XT and RX 7800 XT as rough desktop graphics-card comparison points. Neither is an exact equivalent: matching compute-unit counts does not guarantee matching game performance, since desktop GPUs differ in power, clock speeds, cache, and architecture. Console optimization and different rendering paths make direct comparisons harder still. A meaningful comparison needs to specify the game, resolution, frame rate, image quality, ray tracing, and upscaling—not just a GPU name. PC Gamer’s graphics comparison explains the limits.
Compare the total setup, not just the headline price
The console price buys an integrated gaming setup, including the 2TB SSD and DualSense controller Sony lists. A PC budget needs to account for the complete system, and possibly peripherals you do not already own. Tom’s Guide’s $963–$1,200 example covers core components only; the omitted case, power supply, operating system, and peripherals can raise the final bill.
| Buying path | What the cited figures establish | What to include in your own total |
|---|---|---|
| New PS5 Pro | PC Gamer reported a $900 US price beginning with retailer rollout on April 2, 2026. Sony lists a 2TB SSD and DualSense controller as included. | Current local console price, tax, and any accessories or games you still need. |
| New PC | Tom’s Guide estimated $1,000–$1,500 or more for a broadly comparable system in 2026; its $963–$1,200 core-parts example excludes the case, power supply, operating system, and peripherals. | All components, operating system, peripherals, tax, and current local parts prices. |
| Upgrade an existing PC | PC Gamer described an example upgrade using an Intel 12600KF, RX 7800 XT, Z690 board, and 32GB RAM that exceeded $800. It presumes reuse of other parts, such as the case and potentially the power supply; it is not a complete-system price. | Parts you must replace, compatibility, any reused components, and the cost of bringing the system to your target. |
The upgrade example is not directly comparable to buying a complete console or a new PC: it assumes you already have parts to reuse. If you own a compatible PC, calculate the marginal upgrade cost rather than treating the cost of a fresh build as your only option. PC Gamer’s upgrade discussion gives that example.

When walking away with the console makes sense
You want a straightforward gaming setup
The PS5 Pro is a self-contained console rather than a parts list to assemble and maintain. Its price comparison is strongest when you do not already own useful PC components and would need to budget for a complete system and any missing peripherals.
You care about PlayStation games and console simplicity
The value of the console depends partly on the games you want to play and whether you prefer the PlayStation platform. A PC’s broad performance class does not guarantee the same game library, settings, or experience in a particular title.
You already own a PC or want a machine for more than gaming
An existing compatible case, power supply, memory, or platform can reduce the cost of upgrading, though compatibility and the parts you need to replace determine the real total. A PC can also serve work, productivity, and creative tasks, as well as gaming; those uses may justify paying more than the console’s upfront price.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow to make the comparison useful for your own purchase
- Set the target. Pick the games you play and the output you want, including resolution, frame rate, image quality, ray tracing, and upscaling.
- Price a complete setup. Add the console or every PC part you need, plus tax and any required peripherals. Do not compare the console’s full price with a PC’s core-parts subtotal.
- Separate a new build from an upgrade. List the PC parts you can actually reuse, verify compatibility, and total only the components you must replace.
- Include platform value. Consider your game library and whether PC flexibility, upgrades, or non-gaming work are worth the additional upfront cost to you.
On the available 2026 US figures, the PS5 Pro costs less upfront than a new PC estimated to offer broadly comparable gaming performance. That makes the console a sensible choice for a buyer who wants a dedicated gaming setup and does not have reusable PC parts. It does not establish that the console is the better value for someone who already owns a suitable PC or needs one machine for gaming and other work.
