What is the difference between PS5 and PS5 Pro?
The Pro is an upgraded PS5, not a separate generation with a different game library. It plays PS5 games, and Sony says it can play over 8,500 PS4 games. Pro-specific enhancements, however, apply only to selected games and vary by title. Sony’s US Pro feature page also says Game Boost can improve frame rates in some PS4 and PS5 games; that does not mean every compatible game receives a noticeable or Pro-specific upgrade. Upscaling and image quality
PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) uses machine learning to upscale an image and add detail, according to Sony. What you see depends on whether a game supports PSSR and how its developers have implemented it. Upscaling can help a game target a sharper-looking image while balancing performance, but it is not a universal image-quality upgrade across the library. Sony’s Pro feature page

Frame rates and ray tracing
Sony says supported games may combine ray tracing, 4K output, and frame rates up to 60 or 120 fps on suitable displays. These are capability claims for compatible games, not a promise that every game runs at those settings or sustains a particular frame rate. Look at the modes available in the games you actually play: one may emphasize image detail or ray tracing, while another prioritizes smoother motion.
What Sony’s hardware figures do—and do not—show
In its September 10, 2024 launch announcement, Sony said PS5 Pro has 67% more GPU compute units and 28% faster memory than the then-current PS5, enabling up to 45% faster rendering. Those are Sony’s launch comparisons and stated capability, not independent measurements showing how much faster every game runs. Will your games and display benefit?
Start with the game list, not the console’s headline specifications. Sony’s UK feature page listed over 100 PS5 titles as enhanced for Pro when accessed October 9, 2026; the count can change. A supported label alone does not tell you which visual or performance improvements a game offers, so check the game’s mode descriptions and decide which settings matter to you. - Look for Pro-specific options in the titles you play often, including whether a mode targets resolution, image stability, ray tracing, or frame rate.
- Match those options to your display. Higher refresh rates and 4K output matter only if the game supports them and your display can show them.
- Consider how much time you spend in games with enhancements. A large library count is less persuasive if your regular games are not among the supported titles or their modes do not appeal to you.
Storage, discs, and accessories to factor into the upgrade
Storage capacity
Sony’s cited listings give Pro a 2TB SSD and the US standard PS5 listing a 1TB configuration. That extra included capacity can reduce how often you need to manage installed games, but the comparison is between specific regional listings rather than every model sold worldwide. Sony also lists a compatible M.2 SSD as an expansion option; it is not a universal requirement for buying either console. Check the exact console configuration and expansion compatibility before purchasing.

Disc games and movies
PS5 Pro is digital-only out of the box. If you own disc games or want a disc drive, include the separately sold compatible Disc Drive in your cost calculation. Sony says pairing the drive with the Pro requires an internet connection. If your library is digital and you do not need a drive, you can leave that expense out. Sony’s PS5 buy page
Physical fit and compatibility
Sony’s compatibility guide says the Pro supports the compatible Disc Drive and vertical stand. Older PS5 covers and the older PS5 base do not fit the Pro, and the vertical stand is sold separately. Is the PS5 Pro worth it?
There is no universal value answer without the current price where you live, the games you play, and the accessories you need. Sony announced a US launch MSRP of $699.99 in September 2024, with launch prices of £699.99, €799.99, and ¥119,980 in the listed regions. Those are historical launch prices, not current quotes. Consider the Pro if
- Your most-played games have Pro modes that improve the image or performance in ways you value.
- Your display supports the resolution or refresh-rate features you want to use.
- The local price premium is reasonable for those benefits, after adding a Disc Drive if you need one.
Choose or keep the standard PS5 if
- Your current console and display already deliver the experience you want.
- Your regular games have few relevant Pro enhancements, or their options do not justify the price difference to you.
- The Pro premium and any required disc-drive purchase outweigh the value you place on its graphics, performance, and storage improvements.
