In August 2024, journalists reported that developers at Gamescom were talking about the PS5 Pro as an imminent arrival. The reports were based on conversations attributed to developers, not a Sony announcement. Sony revealed the console on September 10 and launched it worldwide on November 7, 2024—confirming the broad timing, but not every anonymous-source detail.
What journalists said they heard at Gamescom
Push Square reported on August 25, 2024, that Multiplayer journalist Lorenzo Fazio had said a studio told him directly at Gamescom that the console was coming soon. Push Square also summarized a separate WCCF Tech report in which an unnamed team reportedly said it had received the PS5 Pro specifications and expected Unreal Engine 5 to perform much better on the new hardware than on a standard PS5. Push Square’s report presents these as separate accounts; neither was a public statement from Sony.

The original Multiplayer.it Twitch recording or a transcript was not available in the cited coverage, so the precise wording and context of Fazio’s account cannot be established here. The claims should therefore be treated as attributed paraphrases, not direct quotations. The Unreal Engine 5 prediction was likewise an anonymous team’s reported expectation, not an independently verified performance result.

The reports support a narrower conclusion: at least two pieces of August coverage described developers discussing an approaching console, with one account attributed to a named journalist’s conversation with a studio and another to an unnamed team. That suggests the hardware was being discussed within some developer circles. It does not establish how widely it was known, what every developer knew, or that Sony had publicly confirmed it.

What else suggested a 2024 launch?
On August 26, 2024, GameSpot reported Jeff Grubb’s contemporaneous expectation that the PS5 Pro was still due that year. That was a forecast made before Sony’s announcement, rather than official confirmation. GameSpot’s report is useful context for the timing, but it does not independently verify the Gamescom conversations.

Sony revealed PS5 Pro on September 10, 2024, then launched it worldwide on November 7, 2024. Those dates make the general “coming soon” timing in the August reporting accurate in hindsight. Sony’s announcement does not, however, verify the identity or knowledge of the developers described in those reports. Nor does it show that any particular game was delayed because of the console.

Quick Recap
How to read the “imminent” claim
- Release timing: The broad prediction that PS5 Pro was close proved consistent with Sony’s September reveal and November launch.
- Source strength: The Gamescom accounts were reported developer conversations, including anonymous sourcing—not Sony confirmation.
- Technical claims: The reported Unreal Engine 5 expectation should not be treated as a measured or universal performance result.
- Game delays: The reporting and later announcement do not prove that a specific game was delayed because of PS5 Pro.
