This check was conducted on Monday, August 10, 2026. Sony Direct, Best Buy, Target, and Walmart each showed purchasable PS5 listings, although shipping, delivery, pickup, and inventory can vary by ZIP code and may change before checkout.
The best choice depends less on finding a “drop” and more on choosing the right model: the $649.99 PS5 with a disc drive, the $599.99 825GB Digital Edition, or the $899.99 2TB PS5 Pro. Certified refurbished Sony Direct consoles are also available at lower listed prices.

The short answer: you probably do not need to wait for a PS5 restock
As checked in the U.S. on August 10, 2026, PS5 consoles were available through Sony Direct, Best Buy, Target, and Walmart. That is evidence of simultaneous availability across several retailers, not a guarantee that every store or ZIP code has stock. A page can say “in stock” while your local store has no pickup inventory, or while shipping disappears when you enter your address.

Where to buy a PS5 right now
The following were the main U.S. options observed during the August 10 check. Prices are the amounts displayed on the linked pages; Sony Direct often showed whole-dollar prices, while other retailers commonly displayed prices ending in 99 cents.
| Retailer and direct link | Model and condition | Price shown | Availability observed | Seller or caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sony Direct | PS5 1TB with disc drive | $649.00 | Listed as available | First-party Sony purchase |
| Sony Direct | PS5 Digital Edition, 825GB | $599.00 | Listed as available | First-party Sony purchase |
| Sony Direct | PS5 Pro, 2TB | $899.00 | Listed as available | First-party Sony purchase |
| Best Buy | PS5 Slim, 1TB with disc drive | $649.99 | Pickup ready today and shipping available tomorrow on the checked page | Confirm the exact seller and fulfillment method |
| Best Buy | PS5 Slim Digital Edition, 825GB | $599.99 | Add-to-cart option shown | Check “Sold by” and “More buying options” before ordering |
| Target | PS5 1TB with disc drive | $649.99 | “In Stock” on the checked page | Pickup and shipping depend on the selected location |
| Target | PS5 Digital Edition, 825GB | $599.99 | “In Stock” on the checked page | Check location eligibility and final delivery promise |
| Target | PS5 Pro, 2TB | $899.99 | “In Stock” on the checked page | Disc drive and vertical stand are separate |
| Walmart | New PS5 Slim, 1TB with disc drive | $649.00 | Shipping and pickup options shown | The checked listing said “Sold and shipped by Walmart.com” |
| GameStop | Standard PS5 listing with new, pre-owned, and refurbished selectors | Varied by condition | Selected standard edition marked “Currently Unavailable” | Do not infer availability from the other conditions shown |
Prices and availability were checked August 10, 2026, and can change. Target’s listed console pages specify a 30-day return period and one-year limited warranty, but verify the terms for the exact item and location. Some Target locations and U.S. territories may not be eligible for the same shipping options.

What about Amazon?
Amazon should be treated separately. Do not claim that Amazon has current first-party PS5 stock based on a search result, price tracker, or an old listing. Before publishing or buying, verify the live Amazon product page, the seller, condition, model, total price, delivery date, and return terms. A visible Amazon listing may be sold by a marketplace seller rather than Amazon.
Which PS5 should you buy?
| If you… | Best fit | Why |

| Want a disc-capable console below new-console pricing | Sony-certified refurbished disc model | Listed at $549.00 on Sony Direct, subject to availability and refurbished terms |
PS5 1TB with disc drive: the default choice for physical-game buyers
The current slim disc model is the most flexible option. It supports PS5 and PS4 games on Blu-ray discs as well as digital downloads, so you can use physical games, digital purchases, used-game sales, borrowing, trading, and resale. It also functions as a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD player.
Sony identifies the current slim 1TB console by the CFI-2100 model group. The exact model number is worth checking on the product page or packaging because “PS5 Slim” alone is not enough to identify every console configuration.
The trade-off is price: the disc model costs $50 more than the current Digital Edition MSRP. The drive also does not guarantee that every future PlayStation release will have a physical version. Its value comes from the games and media you actually expect to use, not from a promise that all future releases will remain on discs.
The current Sony Direct package includes a DualSense wireless controller, HDMI cable, AC power cord, USB cable, horizontal stand feet, and pre-installed ASTRO’s PLAYROOM. The vertical stand is sold separately.
PS5 Digital Edition: cheaper, but commit to a digital library
The current PS5 Digital Edition has an 825GB SSD and no disc drive in the box. It is the sensible choice if you already buy all games through the PlayStation Store, do not need physical PS4 or PS5 discs, and want the lowest price for a new console.
Digital purchases are tied to your PlayStation account and the PlayStation Store ecosystem. You generally cannot resell or trade digital games, and you are more dependent on account access and the store’s pricing than a disc owner is. The console also advertises less storage than the 1TB disc model, although both systems reserve part of their storage for system software.

Sony says compatible slim Digital Edition model groups can accept an add-on disc drive. That is not a blanket guarantee for every PS5 Digital Edition ever made: check the model group before assuming an upgrade will work. The drive also requires an internet connection to pair with the console during setup; read Sony’s disc-drive setup guidance.
Adding the drive later can reduce or eliminate the original $50 saving, especially after buying the drive separately. If you already own discs or suspect you may want used games, buying the disc model now is usually the simpler calculation.
What Sony’s January 2028 notice means for the disc decision
Sony’s current PS5 product pages include an important notice: from January 2028, newly released PlayStation games will be available for purchase digitally through PlayStation Store and retailers, while discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on the console. See Sony’s PS5 product page and the 1TB console page for the notice.
This does not say that existing physical games will stop working, and it does not make the disc model obsolete today. It does mean buyers should think about what they are purchasing the drive for:
- Choose the disc model if you already own physical PS4 or PS5 games, want used-game pricing, plan to trade or resell games, or want a disc-capable movie player.
- Choose the Digital Edition if you are starting a digital library and do not expect to buy physical releases. Its lower initial price may be more important than flexibility.
- Do not buy based only on rumors about future disc manufacturing. Sony’s published product-page notice is the relevant information for this purchase.
PS5 Pro: who should pay $899.99?
The PS5 Pro has a 2TB SSD and is digital-only out of the box. Sony lists features including PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), optimized console performance, and advanced ray tracing. Those are technical advantages, but the improvement varies by game; a PS5 Pro does not make every PS5 title look or perform identically.
Recommended Free Tools
At the current U.S. MSRP, the Pro costs $250 more than the $649.99 base PS5 and $300 more than the $599.99 Digital Edition. The comparison is not simply console versus console: the Pro’s disc drive and vertical stand are separate purchases.
The Pro is easiest to justify if you own or plan to buy a good 4K display, care about image quality and frame-rate trade-offs, want 2TB of internal storage, and are comfortable paying for enhanced features on supported games. The base PS5 is the better value if your main goal is access to PS5 games, you use a standard 4K TV or 1080p display, or $899.99 is difficult to justify.
Check Sony’s PS5 Pro compatibility information if PS4 compatibility matters to you. Sony lists a small number of PS4 compatibility exceptions.
Current PS5 prices: use the April 2026 MSRP, not an old restock article
Sony raised current U.S. recommended retail prices effective April 2, 2026. The official benchmarks are:
| Model | Current U.S. MSRP | Storage and drive |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 Console | $649.99 | 1TB SSD and disc drive |
| PS5 Digital Edition | $599.99 | 825GB SSD and no included disc drive |
| PS5 Pro | $899.99 | 2TB SSD and digital-only configuration |
These figures come from Sony’s April 2, 2026 price-change announcement. Sony had also changed U.S. prices on August 21, 2025, so articles written before the latest increase can be misleading. Do not describe $499.99 or $449.99 as the current new-console MSRP. Older pages may also show other historical prices such as $699.99 or $749.99 without clearly identifying the date, model, or condition.

A price below MSRP can be legitimate, but identify what explains it:
- a temporary sale;
- a game or extra-controller bundle;
- an open-box item;
- a certified refurbished, restored, or pre-owned console;
- a marketplace seller; or
- an older listing that has not been updated.
A price above MSRP is not automatically fraudulent, but the additional value should be clear. It might include a game, extra controller, limited-edition hardware, or a protection plan. Compare the final price, seller, condition, and bundle contents rather than the headline number alone.
Refurbished, restored, and pre-owned PS5 options
Refurbished hardware can make sense when the discount is meaningful and the return and warranty terms are clear. It should never be presented as equivalent to a new console.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Sony Direct: The checked Sony Direct page listed a certified refurbished PS5 Digital Edition at $499.00 and a certified refurbished disc model at $549.00. These were the lowest listed official-store prices in the checked Sony options, but confirm stock and the exact certification terms at checkout.
- Best Buy: The checked product pages showed a Geek Squad Certified Refurbished disc model at $519.99. A refurbished Digital Edition listing at $449.99 was marked sold out during the check.
- Walmart: The disc-console page showed a “Restored: Like New” option at $549.99 alongside the $649 new Walmart-sold model.
- GameStop: The tested page showed pre-owned and refurbished choices around $503.49, but the selected standard edition was marked unavailable. Select the exact edition and condition before relying on the displayed price.
For any non-new console, check who performed the refurbishment, the warranty, return window, included controller and cables, packaging, cosmetic condition, and whether the drive works. A “from” price may belong to a different condition or seller than the product shown in the main image.
How to buy the correct PS5 listing safely
- Choose the model first. Decide whether you need the 1TB disc model, 825GB Digital Edition, or 2TB Pro before clicking a retailer link.
- Use a direct product page. Start with Sony Direct or a direct page from Best Buy, Target, Walmart, or another recognized retailer. Generic search results can combine multiple editions and conditions.
- Enter your ZIP code. Check shipping, delivery date, store pickup, and local inventory. “In stock” is provisional until the retailer accepts the order.
- Read the exact title and specifications. Confirm “new,” “pre-owned,” “refurbished,” “open box,” or “restored.” Check 825GB, 1TB, or 2TB, and verify disc drive versus Digital Edition. Also check whether the advertised price includes a game or another controller.
- Verify the seller. Prefer Sony or a listing sold and shipped by the retailer. On Walmart and Best Buy, marketplace offers can appear beside first-party inventory. On Walmart, do not treat a “From” price as the price of the new Walmart-sold console.
- Review the final checkout total. Add tax and shipping, and remove or separately evaluate optional protection plans, membership requirements, and bundle items. A protection plan is not part of the console’s advertised price.
- Save the order details. Keep the receipt, model information, seller name, return deadline, and warranty terms until the console has been tested.
Sony recommends buying new PlayStation products from authorized retailers. That helps protect authenticity, functionality, return options, and warranty coverage. Sony also warns that products reported lost or stolen can potentially be suspended from PlayStation services.
Retailer-specific traps to check
Best Buy
Best Buy can show multiple SKUs, conditions, and marketplace offers under similar PS5 product names. Check the exact SKU, whether it is new, and whether it says “Sold by Best Buy.” Pickup is store-specific. A page may show a new first-party model while “More buying options” contains different prices or conditions.
Target
Target’s checked pages showed the disc model, Digital Edition, and Pro as in stock, but the useful question is whether your selected store can ship or hold one for pickup. Set the location before treating stock as confirmed. Target’s pages also specify a 30-day return period and one-year limited warranty for the listed consoles; confirm the terms for your exact order, especially if the item comes from a different condition or seller.
Walmart
Walmart combines Walmart-sold products and marketplace listings on the same shopping experience. The checked new disc listing was $649.00 and said “Sold and shipped by Walmart.com,” while the $549.99 option was labeled restored. Always open the seller and condition fields before comparing prices.
GameStop
GameStop’s PS5 page can display a broad range because it combines new, pre-owned, and refurbished conditions. During this check, the selected standard edition was “Currently Unavailable,” even though other options appeared on the page. Choose the edition and condition first, then confirm that exact selection is available.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to avoid a counterfeit, stolen, or bad PS5 listing
- Buy from Sony Direct or a recognized retailer, and prefer retailer-sold and retailer-shipped stock.
- Be skeptical of an unusually cheap listing advertised as new when the seller, condition, region, or warranty is unclear.
- Confirm the exact model, storage capacity, disc-drive status, and included accessories.
- Be cautious when the listing says “console only” but uses an image showing a controller, stand, or games.
- Confirm that the console is intended for the U.S. market if warranty coverage, regional support, and power compatibility matter.
- Check the payment and return terms. Avoid irreversible payment methods when buying from a private seller.
- For a used console, verify that it boots, connects to PlayStation Network, includes a working DualSense controller, reads discs if it is the disc model, and is not account-locked, banned, damaged, or reported stolen.
Sony’s buying guidance is especially relevant here: an apparently cheap console can create problems if it is fraudulent, stolen, defective, or later suspended from PlayStation services.

What to do if a PS5 sells out during checkout
A failed cart does not necessarily mean a nationwide shortage. Retailer inventory is often split between shipping, delivery, and individual stores. Use this recovery path:
- Try shipping if pickup failed, or pickup if shipping disappeared.
- Change the selected store or check a nearby ZIP code.
- Open Sony Direct rather than repeatedly refreshing the same sold-out cart.
- Check Best Buy, Target, and Walmart separately using the exact model name.
- Consider a Sony-certified refurbished console if the savings and terms are worthwhile.
- Remove an unavailable accessory, protection plan, or bundle component from the cart and retry.
- Do not immediately switch to an unknown marketplace seller at a large markup.
Search for the exact configuration—such as “PS5 1TB disc” or “PS5 Digital Edition 825GB”—instead of searching only for “PS5.” That reduces the chance of accidentally buying a cheaper Digital Edition when you wanted a disc drive, or a used console when you wanted new.
Why old PS5 restock coverage is misleading
During the 2020–2021 shortage, “PS5 restock” commonly meant a genuine nationwide inventory drop that sold out quickly. That history still shapes search results. Pages such as this 2021 Amazon restock report and this older retailer tracker are useful historical context, but they are not evidence of August 2026 stock or pricing.
In 2026, the practical question is usually: which model is available from which seller, at what price, and with what fulfillment promise? A retailer can have national inventory while your ZIP code lacks delivery or pickup. A marketplace listing can remain visible after retailer-controlled inventory has sold out. Availability can also change between the product page and the moment the order is submitted.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to wait for the next PS5 restock?
Not based on the August 10, 2026 U.S. check. Sony Direct, Best Buy, Target, and Walmart showed purchasable PS5 listings. You should still enter your ZIP code and confirm the order at checkout because local inventory and fulfillment options can change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIs the PS5 Digital Edition cheaper than the disc model?
Yes. Sony’s current U.S. MSRP is $599.99 for the 825GB Digital Edition and $649.99 for the 1TB PS5 with a disc drive. The Digital Edition has no drive in the box, and adding Sony’s compatible disc drive later can reduce or eliminate the initial $50 saving.
Does the PS5 Pro include a disc drive or vertical stand?
No. The PS5 Pro is digital-only out of the box, and both its disc drive and vertical stand are sold separately. Its Pro enhancements also vary by game.
Can I trust a PS5 listing below MSRP?
Possibly, but check why it is cheaper. It may be a sale, bundle, refurbished or restored unit, open-box product, or marketplace offer. Verify the seller, condition, model, warranty, returns, included accessories, and final checkout total before paying.
The Bottom Line
Buy now rather than wait for a restock alert if you find the right model at a verified retailer. Choose the $649.99 1TB disc PS5 for physical games and media, the $599.99 825GB Digital Edition for an all-digital library, or the $899.99 2TB PS5 Pro when its game-dependent visual improvements justify the premium. Sony Direct’s certified refurbished consoles offer lower official-store prices, but compare their condition, warranty, and return terms with new hardware.
