If your PS5 displays “Rebuilding database” after a system update, the message alone does not show that the update caused a fault. PlayStation describes Rebuild Database as a maintenance option that scans the drive and creates a new database of system content. The official guidance does not explain why this message appeared in your particular case or identify a patch-specific problem.
What “Rebuilding database” means on PS5
PlayStation Support says the Safe Mode option scans the drive and creates a new database of content on the system. Its guide lists Rebuild Database as useful for system feature issues or when a deleted game’s icon remains on the Home screen. It does not say that seeing the message after an update, by itself, proves the update is defective. (PlayStation Safe Mode guide)
The message does not identify which system software version you have, and PlayStation’s guidance does not explain the exact cause of this occurrence. Without a version-specific notice or other symptoms, there is no basis to attribute it to a particular patch.
Will it delete your games or saves?
PlayStation distinguishes Rebuild Database from reset options that delete user data. Its Safe Mode guide specifically says Repair Console Storage does not erase data, while Reset PS5 and Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) delete user data. Some Safe Mode options can cause data loss, so back up to USB or Cloud Storage before choosing an option that warns of deletion. (PlayStation Safe Mode guide)

What to do if the message appears after an update
If the console finishes starting normally
Let the process finish and check whether the PS5 returns to normal use. Do not choose a reset simply because you saw this message: resets delete user data, and the message alone is not evidence that one is needed.
If the console will not start or storage trouble continues
Use PlayStation’s Safe Mode guidance and, if needed, its PlayStation Repairs diagnostic route. Before selecting a Safe Mode option, read its on-screen data warning and back up important data when possible.

PlayStation’s instructions for the specific game-start error CE-109573-5 recommend restarting the PS5, deleting and reinstalling the affected game, and then trying Rebuild Database in Safe Mode if the issue continues. If it still persists, the guidance says to return to Safe Mode and select Update System Software. That sequence is for CE-109573-5; it is not general guidance for every post-update rebuild message.
