CFI-2000 Slim and CFI-7000 PS5 Pro consoles need their horizontal feet attached before use; upright placement requires a compatible vertical stand. The original CFI-1000 models use their own base and stand instructions. The removable side panels are called covers, and each belongs in its specific position.
Check your PS5 model before choosing a stand
Look for the model number on the console before attaching a base, feet, or stand. Sony provides separate instructions for the CFI-1000, CFI-2000, and CFI-7000 model groups, so do not assume that a support method for one group applies to another. Sony’s PS5 setup instructions and vertical stand attachment guide explain the model-specific steps.

Can the PS5 stand vertically?
Yes, provided you use a vertical stand compatible with your console model and attach it as instructed. For CFI-2000 Slim and CFI-7000 PS5 Pro consoles, Sony’s setup guidance says the vertical stand is sold separately. Sony’s US vertical stand product listing currently names CFI-1000, CFI-2000, CFI-2100, and PS5 Pro compatibility. Check the model number and current compatibility details before buying; compatibility with one PS5 group does not establish compatibility with every stand or third-party accessory.
Do I need the PS5 stand for horizontal placement?
For CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 consoles, attach the appropriate horizontal feet before use. Sony’s quick-start guide for CFI-2002 states: “Always attach the feet to your PS5® console before use.” The correct arrangement depends on whether the console has a disc drive, as shown in Sony’s setup diagrams. The original CFI-1000 uses its own base instructions, rather than the later Slim feet procedure.

Is vertical or horizontal placement better?
The official setup and safety documents cited here do not establish that either orientation improves cooling, performance, or reliability. Choose the orientation that suits your space, then use the model-appropriate support and follow Sony’s installation instructions. Do not treat unsupported claims about liquid metal leakage or a universal cooling advantage as a reason to pick one position.
What are the PS5 side panels called, and which goes where?
Sony calls the removable panels “covers.” They are shaped for particular positions, and the symbols printed on their inside surfaces help identify where each one belongs. Do not swap them based on appearance alone: match the shapes and inside marks, then make sure every cover is installed correctly before turning on the console.

Remove or attach covers safely
- Turn off the console, disconnect it from power, and let it cool before removing or attaching covers.
- Use the cover-removal and replacement steps for your PS5 model in Sony’s setup guidance.
- Match each cover to its position using its shape and inside symbols, and confirm the covers are seated correctly before powering on.
Sony’s safety guide warns that covers installed incorrectly may cause the main unit to overheat. It also cautions against operating the console without its covers; they are not optional while the PS5 is in use.
